Thinking of a chippy tea with some fruit ciders, switching to wine as the night goes on. I’ll be parked in front of the TV until I fall asleep, probably. DP will join but will go to bed normal time he says.

This - I think the Tories have really managed to improve political engagement among the young. All the ones I know are angry.

Exactly this!

Because I don't have a driving licence or a passport, and the electoral commission have seen fit to take away centuries of a brits right to turn up and vote without a photo ID. So sadly not voting this time.

FFS, there's no need to wallow in self pity. You can get a free voting ID certificate online. It is quick and easy to apply for. Alternatively you can apply for a postal vote which is very simple to do.

RandomButtons · 29/05/2024 20:42

I’ve got a 14 hour shift the next day so off to bed early for me, would have stayed up for the drama otherwise

BirthdayRainbow · 29/05/2024 20:44

I've just realised it is my son and daughters first time being able to vote and my son will be home from uni so I'll watch it with him and get what snacks he wants.

MermaidEyes · 29/05/2024 20:53

Genuinely curious, those who don't have photo id, do you never not need it for anything else? I've had to use mine for both banking issues and holiday bookings recently.

MojoMoon · 29/05/2024 20:56

Thank you to all the presiding officers, poll clerks, vote counters and everyone else that makes to all happen behind the scenes.
I hope you get good snacks and plentiful tea.

I am not a regular volunteer but think I will take election day off and volunteer to knock on doors to get the Labour vote out in Deal. Spending election night at a friend's house with sleeping bag, her husband will make an excellent Indian feast. Can't drink alcohol or will fall asleep so will save the champagne to toast just before giving up and falling asleep around 3am.

ToffeePennie · 29/05/2024 20:57

Taking a cake to my aunty and hopefully singing happy birthday to a new Nan (my cousin is pregnant and we are SUPER excited)

Andnowshesatoddler · 29/05/2024 21:06

It'll be a usual night here and the toddler will wake us up around 5am I'll narrow eyed watch the results.

Not self pity, a combination of stubbornness against the whole photo ID soviet "papers please" approach and the fact that as a lifelong Tory voter, I can't vote for them as they have made such a monumental fuck up of everything - but then I don't like the builder and his mates either, and think they will only make it worse.

In any case, it will be a Tory slam dunk here, always is, always will be, albeit with a reduced majority, so it doesn't matter if I turn out or not.

I'm sure the builder will get in, and things will go from bad to worse, as they would with sunak, no win.

Never has one, will hold out as long as possible, just plain stubborn, hate the idea "papers please" not for me - teacher, so regularly (well, 3 yearly) have a DBS, opened bank accounts, been an executor, always worked round it.

44 now, last went on holiday when I was 16, bloody miserable experience, never again!

IClaudine · 29/05/2024 22:39

The builder? Why do you call Starmer that @PropertyManager ?

SocksAndTheCity · 29/05/2024 22:40

Keir Starmer is an award winning human rights lawyer, @PropertyManager , not a 'builder'.

His name really isn't that difficult to remember, although if previous threads are anything to go by it's the most difficult four letter word in the English language to spell.

J.L.Kier & Co., better known these days just as Kier, one of Britain's biggest building firms.

What does that have to do with Starmer, apart from the name? I don't get it?

That's it, just the name, and he has similarities in charisma level to a concrete block.

In my mind a bit of a false messiah, everyone thinks he has all the answers, all will be well under his leadership - I have great misgivings...

...and have zero time for the incumbents either - very few in the commons these days who could run a bath, let alone a country.

Cattenberg · 29/05/2024 23:17

I don’t find Starmer very inspiring, but he says he’ll only make promises that he can actually deliver. If that turns out to be true, he’ll be a breath of fresh air in our stale, disreputable system.

Problem I have with him is he is a classic "problems man", very good at stating the problem, that everyone else can see - but less forthcoming with solutions.

And what we have is problems, and what we need is solutions, not promises.

I knew the spinning is different, Olaf Kier was Danish, pronounced the same though, good enough for me!

miniaturepixieonacid · 30/05/2024 00:11

I always stay up. Love election nights and I can easily power through the next day if it's only 1 night of no sleep. This time it's the night before the end of term for me (private school teacher) so even less need for sleep, it's only 1 day to get thorough.

I hate exit polls though - why have spoilers? Would make a much more exciting night without them.

I'm trying to be excited about Labour winning because I know it's the best thing for the most people. But I also know I could well lose my job when VAT on school fees comes in so Labour are bad news for me personally. But I'll get over myself and cheer along.

sunflowerdaisyrose · 30/05/2024 00:20

I'll be going to bed after a normal Thursday evening - though the hall we use for the yoga is being used for voting so we are hoping for sunshine so we can do it in a garden! I find the whole thing depressing as I don't want any of them to win so no result to celebrate here.

ChallahPlaiter · 30/05/2024 07:17

Such a privileged point of view to say all the parties are the same. No they’re bloody well not, if you’re a member of a marginalised group that the Tories have demonised, impoverished and generally given a good kicking since 2010. I can’t wait for them to get their boot off the back of my neck.

So what's wrong with getting a postal vote, @PropertyManager? Not only will you not have to get photo ID, but you will get a postal vote for every election from now on.

And even if you do still return a Tory MP, every vote against them will demonstrate how much people abhor their policies and ethos.

@ChallahPlaiter - you are right about the differences between the ideologies of the two main parties - even though I have not been directly affected by the worst of the Tory policies that have so badly affected you and many others, I still hate them for the damage and hurt they have caused. I truly hope that Labour will do better - their ideology should dictate that they will - but I am depressed about the state of politics altogether, and that depression makes me cynical about any politician's ability to put the needs of the most marginalised in society above their own. And yes, I do acknowledge how privileged this makes me.

I will be casting my vote tactically to get the Tories out, and I hope that Labour do win - and I truly hope I am proved wrong, and they lift up the people who need it the most.

No short memories here.

I didn't agree with the war in Iraq and marched against it. But if the Tories had been in power at that point, they would have backed the US too, don't delude yourself.

TBF I don't think you can hold Starmer accountable for what Blair did over two decades ago.

Agree with this^
UK always supports USA on these issues, Tories would absolutely do the same.

There are a lot of other IDs you can use e.g bus pass. My teen DD hasn’t got driving license and she has 3 photos IDs ( and that’s without college card)
Do you want to vote or do you want a reason to moan here? If you want to vote you can easily sort it out.
