Thinking of a chippy tea with some fruit ciders, switching to wine as the night goes on. I’ll be parked in front of the TV until I fall asleep, probably. DP will join but will go to bed normal time he says.

I don't work on Fridays so I'll stay awake as long as I possibly can. I particularly want to see Andrea Jenkyns lose her seat.

I'm with you on this one, she's my MP currently, although we're having a boundary change so I don't know what's happening with that.

Rest assured I've never voted for her and it was a sad day when Ed Balls lost his seat to her. Baffling how people round here vote Tory, they certainly don't have the best interests of this area and its people at heart.

But on the election night I'll probably go to bed as normal and see what's happened when I get up.

AuntieMarys · 29/05/2024 06:33

We are going on holiday the next day so it will be eating whats left in the fridge and an early night! Looking forward to the drive next day listening to the results

Oohooh · 28/05/2024 21:16

What time will we have a good-ish idea who has won? Perhaps 3am?

At 10pm pollsters will announce the winner - based on their very accurate exit polls, but it's not official of course until the counting is over.

Westfacing · 29/05/2024 06:47

I'll have wine and snacks until midnight, then coffee.

After all those 12-hour night shifts over the years staying awake isn't a problem!

You never know. Electoral Calculus predicts a very, very, very narrow Labour win. Fingers crossed 🤞https://www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/fcgi-bin/calcwork23.py?seat=Fareham%20and%20Waterlooville

Edited

That's very interesting. I think the boundaries have moved recently to take in Havant which have always voted a little more central than Fareham. Definitely one to watch, thanks for sharing.

ImWearingPantaloons · 29/05/2024 06:56

We are camping, but will take champagne with us and try our hardest to stay up / awake

Cheguevarahamster · 29/05/2024 09:15

I have the day off on the 4th and the 5th. I will having a party with friends on the night and will be staying up to the early hours with election night bingo cards, prosecco and cans of red bull. I have bunting & balloons - I cant wait!

Shoxfordian · 29/05/2024 09:19

My husband is out with a work thing, I'll take an occasional glance at the news

marie3e · 29/05/2024 09:20

@Cheguevarahamster that sounds lovely

pointythings · 29/05/2024 09:40

I'm planning a power nap between 9 and 11.30, then up with snacks and wine the rest of the night. I've requested the 5th off, haven't heard back yet though.

I truly expected a Labour landslide but my colleagues all seem to be planning to vote reform. Maybe it’ll be a conservative/reform coalition. I know it’s only a small section of society in my sample but I’m genuinely surprised but also don’t like Labour so I’m not sure what outcome I want. I hate them all.

I bloody hope not.

Everyone I know is voting Labour, we’re a mix of opinions but ultimately don’t want to split the vote and just want to GTTO

Can't imagine why women are welcoming a party that will erase our rights with self identifying women policies. Turkeys for Christmas spring to mind.

amijustbeingsuspicious · 29/05/2024 13:14

Will quite possibly be in labour. Hard to say what will be more painful - transition, or labour getting in 🤣

mitogoshi · 29/05/2024 13:18

?? Is this a thing?

Usually bed early and wake up 6ish for results

Yes, for those of us interested in politics. Have been doing it since 1992.

This time, like 1997, a lot of people who aren't even hugely political will be staying up to watch the Tories get screwed

Cattery · 29/05/2024 14:27

KreedKafer · 28/05/2024 21:38

DP and I always book the day after an election off work so we can stay up all night. We’ll be settled in front of the telly early doors with an array of savoury snacks and booze and we’ll probably put in a pizza delivery order around 10pm. We’re colossal nerds about politics and even enjoy election nights when the actual results are depressing, so we’re going to be absolutely beside ourselves with excitement this time knowing we’re likely to see the back of the worst shower of arseholes in living memory.

Same. It’s the punishment that I’m looking forward to

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/05/2024 14:44

I'll be up and partying.🎉 This year DS1(17) will be staying up too. It's his first time.😁

I'll be drinking Aperol spritz and eating a fancy nut combo that my local offie sells.

afaloren · 29/05/2024 14:49

My husband LOVES elections. Loves them. Voting is DH’s favourite thing to do! So we have both booked the next day off work and plan to stay up as late as we can, with some wine to celebrate/drown our sorrows after the exit poll!

AsburyPark · 29/05/2024 14:54

TattiePants · 28/05/2024 22:37

I might be volunteering at a count this year but if not I’ll be doing an all nighter as usual. Settle down on the sofa with snacks, drinks and a blanket ready for the 10pm exit poll prediction and cheer as each Tory loses their seat. My area is always first to call and will undoubtedly be Labour so I’ll start the celebrations early!

You must be in my neck of the woods. I sometimes wonder why we don’t just declare labour as soon as voting finishes then get down to the technicality of the count after 😂, although the race to be first is always fun!

I remember my parents staying up on general election nights in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1979, I remember my mum waking us up for school and announcing, "well, she's got in" and thinking she was talking about the neighbour's cat, which used to break into our kitchen for scraps. 😂

As for the pp talking about self-ID: look, it's one teeny bit of legislative wasteland in the Labour offering compared with the vast uninhabitable steppes of desolation we've had, and would continue to have, from the Tories - and don't kid yourself that the Eton set or their hateful petit-bourgeois sidekicks have any great enthusiasm for women's rights either. Let's just for the love of god get the Tories out, support Labour in trying to rebuild the public sector, and bring the fight to them over self-ID and TRA ideology afterwards. Please.

murasaki · 29/05/2024 15:09

Post exit polls, sleep, then up about 2 ish. Sofa in pjs until I lose the will to live. Dp is working so probably update him at 5 or so when he gets up. Return to bed for most of Friday daytime.

May include wine, cheese, mini cheddars, crumpets, fruit tea. And coffee if needed.

murasaki · 29/05/2024 15:12

97 was epic. I was a student and we all piled round to the friend with the largest room, drank, added a little artificial staying up things, and laughed our arses off for hours. A memorable night.

Now I am old and sensible, it won't look anything like that.

Ooh I love staying up to watch the elections! Even watch the US ones too, I have no idea about US politics but election night is always worth a watch!

Westfacing · 29/05/2024 15:24

Maybe it’ll be a conservative/reform coalition

I don't think so, somehow.

LakieLady · 29/05/2024 15:26

Power nap around 10, set the alarm for 12.30, brew a pot of espresso to keep me awake for the rest of the night, open a bottle of champagne when Labour win the seat that gives them the overall majority, possibly let off a couple of fireworks in the garden (there will be a lot of that going on locally, if 1997 is anything to go by) and hope I can stay awake long enough to see Sunak resign and Starmer walk into number 10.
