To think I had every right to be in the right hand lane when driving the speed limit on a dual carriage way

Dh thinks not.

So I’ve had to do a speed awareness course a while ago so do my best to keep to speed limits at all times.

Driving home on a curving dual carriage way on a slight tilt. 50 limit signs every few yards and a speed camera sign. The lane on the right turns into a fly over which I needed to keep on. So I was in the right hand lane driving at 50. A car came right up to my bumper and kept flashing. I stayed in the lane and pointed at the signs. He kept flashing then overtook me in a dramatic fashion, zoomed off( so breaking the speed limit) then slowed down so ended up driving not that faster than me but still over the limit.

Dh said I should have pulled over. I don’t understand why. Nobody on that road should be doing over 50 so what would be the benefit of me pulling over if I’m doing 50?

Omg, You have been told again and again that you were in the wrong, and yet you are still arguing the point! Why ask AIBU and then not accept what people are repeatedly telling you?

Read the thread!!! On being told to move and stop arguing I posted to say I was doing just that.Stopped posting a long way down so would be interested to see what is causing your frothing.

Over and out.

Section 137 of the highway code says:

On a two-lane dual carriageway you should stay in the left-hand lane. Use the right-hand lane for overtaking or turning right. After overtaking, move back to the left-hand lane when it is safe to do so.

It's online if you are ever unsure about driving rules/etiquette and want to check.

I am sorry to everyone who is sick of my posting this. But crab you need to take your own advice. She was also turning right in effect.

Approaching a junction. Look well ahead for signals, signs and road markings. Direction signs may be placed over the road. If you need to, you should change lanes well ahead of a junction. At some junctions, a lane may lead directly off the road. Only get in that lane if you wish to go in the direction indicated by signs or road markings

Yes, at what point do people think OP should have moved into the right hand lane given she needed to be in it to get where she was going?
under a mile seems fine to me.

Presumably when the signage tells you your turn off is coming up.

She was in the right hand lane to turn right. How difficult is that to understand?

Depends on how far off the turn was though.

So we don’t need to adhere to the speed limit?

Well you clearly didn't used to think so if you've been on a speed awareness course 🤣

As most have pointed out, along with your DH, you were wrong. It's got fuck all to do with you if someone else chooses to speed so move the fuck out of the way and mind your business.

Depends on how far off the turn was though.

Exactly that and was there space to pull left and then right again

I don't drive fast, often a bit below the limit and often a lot below the speed limits in side streets long before the 20mph restrictions came into play

I've been stuck behind ignorant drivers, often female that hog the right lane a good mile before the right turning

At times you may have no choice as left lane is almost nose to tail but a good driver will not slow up other traffic and give way etc

WomanMumLoverDaughterStepmumFriend · 25/05/2024 19:14

You were wrong no 2 ways about it .

Tospyornottospy · 25/05/2024 19:20

I always wonder the type of person who sits in the outside lane (and the middle too tbh) doing 67mph, especially when the inside lane is clear.

this has been an eye opening thread.

Teledeluxe · 25/05/2024 19:21

It’s illegal to hog the outside lane. You’re lucky it wasn’t an unmarked police car.

I was a driving examiner for five years. If you had done that on your test, you would have failed. Still want to argue?

Marketplacevirgin · 25/05/2024 19:31

As a fairly new driver, I'm amazed that it's acceptable to continually break the speed limit, whatever type of road it is.
This morning I was driving through a village at 30 (the clearly advertised limit).
The car behind drove close to me and then over took as soon as he could, ignoring the limit.
Same yesterday on a motorway. (Not doing 30 obviously!).

Some drivers seem to view the speed limits as optional. It baffles me.

Conversely I see many people driving at 30-35 in a 50mph zone with good conditions and clear visibility. Also not acceptable.

NewPapaGuinea · 25/05/2024 19:35

Depends on layout and signage. If there are signs saying left goes to x and right lane to y then, yes, you’re justified using that lane.

LivelyBlake · 25/05/2024 19:41

So all the posters that would never ever have moved to the right hand lane because it is a fast lane, what would you have done to exit the road given than the turn off was on the right?

Maddy70 · 25/05/2024 19:41

No. You always stay on the left unless overtaking. Then as soon as you can you move back to the left. Thats the law. Might be as well having a read of the highway code. We all forget bits

OldPerson · 25/05/2024 19:45

Rules of the Highway Code.

You stick to the left handside lane - also known as inside or slowest - at all times, unless you're overtaking or there is an obstruction.

You never hog the faster lanes - that's just bad driving.

You should have stayed in the slowest lane until you needed to change lanes to be in the lane that changed directions.

In a 50 miles per hour speed limit, you can drive up to 55mph before you break the law.

You will always meet idiots on the road. Don't provoke them. Don't get into road rage with them. Just know they are the most likely idiots to be in a fatal car crash. And be grateful the crash and rage is not involving you.

But yes. DH is right. Unless there are roadworks and everyone is filmed by cameras at keeping to 50mph, we all should be aiming to stay in the slow lane - unless it drops below 50, then we move into the next lane and overtake.

No you don't, you move to the right (if going right) once you pass the Get In Lane sign.

MadMadaMim · 25/05/2024 19:48

Oh.... You're that driver. The one who thinks it's their job to control what everyone is else on the road is doing. It's not.

You at the worst kind of driver, after drink drivers.

KEEP OUT of the outside lane unless you're overtaking (and not half a mile up the road but imminently) or need to be in that lane IMMINENTLY due to lane separation for different destinations.

I'm more shocked that you've admitted you're that person!

Whostolemymojo · 25/05/2024 19:50

P3kingDuck · 24/05/2024 19:59

I wasn’t controlling the limit I was doing what was on the sign.

Not the point. Right lane for overtaking only. You don’t just sit in a lane because you are doing the speed limit. Yes the guy breaking the speed limit was probably a knob, but just sitting in that lane unless your turn is imminent is poor driving…

LivelyBlake · 25/05/2024 19:51

Conkersinautumn · 25/05/2024 19:52

If someone is driving unsafely (flashing lights, coming close to your bumper and erratic speed) then yes, I would move over because I don't want to be in the inevitable crash the incompetent driver fully deserves.
