To think I had every right to be in the right hand lane when driving the speed limit on a dual carriage way

Dh thinks not.

So I’ve had to do a speed awareness course a while ago so do my best to keep to speed limits at all times.

Driving home on a curving dual carriage way on a slight tilt. 50 limit signs every few yards and a speed camera sign. The lane on the right turns into a fly over which I needed to keep on. So I was in the right hand lane driving at 50. A car came right up to my bumper and kept flashing. I stayed in the lane and pointed at the signs. He kept flashing then overtook me in a dramatic fashion, zoomed off( so breaking the speed limit) then slowed down so ended up driving not that faster than me but still over the limit.

Dh said I should have pulled over. I don’t understand why. Nobody on that road should be doing over 50 so what would be the benefit of me pulling over if I’m doing 50?

It's irrelevant what speed you were going really if you were in the right lane that's only to be used if you are overtaking another vehicle! You should stay in left lane until nearer to the carriageway splitting off for your junction.

It's doesn't have anything to do with sex or gender, she was breaking the highway code, (tho he was being an arse too). Breaking the highway code is not ok, for anyone, male or female

She wasn't breaking the highway code because she was in the correct lane for the road to split right

Have you driven on a motorway? Similar situation. The signs for get in lane are a long way from the actual split/turn off.

It's usually wankers who leave it to the last minute to get in the correct lane

DontKnow1988 · 25/05/2024 15:41

You are wrong.

Get in the left hand lane FFS.

Amen to this

Do we know where this was ie a Streetview pic?

CountessWindyBottom · 25/05/2024 16:04

Your husband is correct, as are the majority of people replying to you. You need to educate yourself on the rules of the road.

She was in the right hand lane to turn right. How difficult is that to understand?

It seems incredibly difficult for some.

Loads of people sit in that lane because it’s a feeder lane over a road. Why would you need to overtake of the speed limit us being kept to?

Not the point. The rule is to drive on the left unless overtaking. What other people are doing isn't your concern. You just focus on sticking to the rules.

frenchfancy81 · 25/05/2024 16:48

The left-hand lane is the driving lane and the right-hand lane is for overtaking, simple as that. You should definitely know this having done a speed awareness course!

bananaramaterry · 25/05/2024 17:04

@Fatnold how difficult was it to understand that she's was in it too early and lane hogging!

The driver managed to get round her and remain in front of her and then she complains he stayed in front of her and didn't move onto the left lane? I mean WTF?

Also how if there was traffic on the inside lane, that OP couldn't pass did she get either over or undertaken? Was he Professor Pat Pending from whacky races?

Midgegreenstreet · 25/05/2024 17:19

It's not up to you to decide how fast other drivers should go. My DH drove me to hospital well above the speed limit when I was very close to giving birth in the car. You've got no idea what their reason might be for breaking the speed limit.

It's an overtaking lane.

You were causing a more dangerous situation by not pulling over.

Read your highway code 🤔

THE HIGHWAY CODE

  1. Lane discipline (264 to 266)

264
Keep in the left lane unless overtaking.
If you are overtaking, you should return to the left lane when it is safe to do so (see also Rules 267 and 268).

Nipsmum · 25/05/2024 18:14

You need to admit you were wrong. You would not have to attend a course if you were correct. That's the law.

Rosscameasdoody · 25/05/2024 18:15

Sorry, but you should be in the left lane until you need to be in the right hand lane. It’s for overtaking.

You need to read on:

266
Approaching a junction. Look well ahead for signals, signs and road markings. Direction signs may be placed over the road. If you need to, you should change lanes well ahead of a junction. At some junctions, a lane may lead directly off the road. Only get in that lane if you wish to go in the direction indicated by signs or road markings
.

GiveMeCoffeeandTV · 25/05/2024 09:25

I know a road system exactly like this - leaving the A1 to join the very bottom of the M1. You need to be in the right lane of three to join the M1.

You do need to get over in good time to avoid crossing multiple lanes of busy traffic. Everyone who knows the road, does this. They get over to the right lane with around a mile to go.

I understand OP and think you did the right thing, unless the whole rest of the road was clear, which would have enabled you to join the right lane at the last minute.

This is exactly the road I had in mind. Anyone that is sensible does what the OP did. Move to the right hand lane when you see a safe gap and stay there until you exit. Nobody weaves in and out so as to allow for faster drivers which are going over the limit anyway.

Sparkysmum · 25/05/2024 18:34

P3kingDuck · 24/05/2024 19:58

But why did anybody need to overtake if I was doing the speed limit? We would both be getting off at the same place.

As long as you are driving within your limits, you are fine. What other drivers are doing is not your concern unless they are driving in a dangerous manner that can cause you harm.

TheTwinklyPoster · 25/05/2024 18:39

Omg, You have been told again and again that you were in the wrong, and yet you are still arguing the point! Why ask AIBU and then not accept what people are repeatedly telling you?

That's not what she said. She seems to be complaining that after he dramatically undertook her he slowed right down again, in front of her.

I suspect he only belatedly clocked the speed limit.

I don't know how you can tell that she changed lanes for the junction too early. She says that everyone who drives this stretch gets in lane early, because the flyover section is single lane only.

Any chance of a picture or map @P3kingDuck ?

Jzp · 25/05/2024 18:46

You’re wrong, DH is right. You cannot hog the overtaking lane and expect people not to get annoyed
