I work in food supply chain.
Four of the 'big' grocery retailers have just asked to renegotiate at least four weeks min supply, as opposed to two.
This happened in Feb 2020 as well.
Lots of rhetoric about being on a war footing, from politicos.
And then Sunak essentially jumping ship yesterday, as though he knows there is a crisis on the horizon that he wants no part of.
There is no way that the Tories have a prayer in a July election.
So what do they know that they aren't telling us?

Because there is no misogyny in the other partys

Oh course there is, but when you can name it it’s something that can be tackled, when you’re including men in the definition of women, how do you even define misogyny, let alone tackle it?

T1Dmama · 25/05/2024 20:20

What items are being over ordered? Give us a heads up so we can all go and panic buy and Fill our lofts, sheds and garages with pasta and toilet roll 😂😂

I think it’s highly likely we could be.

Im just not sure exactly what.

Another virus is on the way? I’ve read ‘they’re’ making a new vaccine for the next big one. Conspiracy theory? I’ve no idea🤔

I used to work in vaccine development, so it is people like me you are accusing.
What are you accusing me and people like me of? Please, be specific.

@BlackFriYay

"Ha that's exactly what I thought when I saw the "should I feel guilty for receiving a large amount of universal credit" thread the other week, with the OP rustling everybody's feathers going on about how she receives thousands.

I thought to myself, it's very convenient timing to start pissing off a forum with a sizable % of middle class users. That's one way to temp somebody to vote Tory."

It's BS as well; nobody receives thousands in UC.

Catiopatio · 25/05/2024 20:28

Some of this may be to seek to avoid financial shocks if there is intl disruption.

Food supply lines and the issues of modern supermarkets have been studied for at least a decade (see some of the events/reports from Chatham House).

I am amazed people are heavily landscaping gardens/in some cases putting down plastic lawns. We are self sufficient in berries and (for half the year) apples. The UK imports almost all its required fruit. We also grow tomatoes and some other veg over the summer. Not preppers and we obviously cannot live off this, but good to avoid pesticides in these items, avoid ridiculous plastic packaging and makes for a nice garden with blossom, bumble bees and butterflies. It is also interesting for DC to see food growing. I think there should be some encouragement to put in a fruit tree or two space permitting, plus awareness of the ease/low space requirement to grow things like tomatoes and herbs (again, a ridiculous amount of plastic for plants that are easy to grow in minimal space). Community gardens could be a requirement in some areas. With secure chicken coops for both eggs and to use up food waste, if welfare could be assured.

"In 2020, the UK depended for about 44% on the import of vegetables. For fruits this was even close to 84%. Even for some of the main products that the UK produces, the import volume is relatively high." https://www.cbi.eu/market-information/fresh-fruit-vegetables/united-kingdom/market-potential#:~:text=The%20current%20labour%20shortages%20make,import%20volume%20is%20relatively%20high.

Isn’t it obvious, if anyone gets in other than Tory it’s going to go to shit really quickly. Really quickly. So they need to be prepared for a market meltdown that might not recover fast.

🤣 If anyone gets in other than the Tories things will improve. Labour are also shit but they would start fixing some of the things the Tories have (deliberately, to make themselves richer) broken.

WhatMothersDo22 · 25/05/2024 20:37

I mean I literally can’t see how the country could get any worse at this point, bar a war. UK is an embarrassment

@MibsXX

"The only shop near me for miles charges 1.45 for a box of matches.....I have to feed 3 of us on 14 a week, often less. So yes, even a box of matches that MIGHT be needed ( but with no candles and a possibly useless electric cooker what would matches be of use for) versus food that IS needed now"

Exactly. Folk with a comfortable income just don't get it do they. I remember sitting with my ex's family once and his Mum was talking about her childhood. She mentioned they used jars to drink out of as they couldn't afford glasses. His cousin said something like "it makes you think doesn't it, how much better off we are these days. Nobody's drinking out of jam jars now." Meanwhile guess what the kids and I were using as glasses at home 🤣 and we didn't have curtains downstairs yet either 😅

MixedCouple · 25/05/2024 20:40

I agree. It is really siilly people the still think those in the their ivory towers are oblivious to what is set to happen especially after 2020 that should have woken up the world.
I worked in medical supplies/food and the higher ups knew well before COVID became a crises and already had a script and plan.

Preparedness and continuity planning is sensible policy. It isn't evidence of conspiracy. Planning for something that might happen isn't the same as planning to make it happen.

Ok, whatever may or may not be going to happen this year, may I suggest that there really is feck all any of us can do about it, so how about we all simply look forward to a nice warm summer, do something fun every day, take joy in hearing birdsong, smile and say hi to a stranger when out walking, and learn to appreciate the life we do have each and every day. One day at a time.

💗

I suspect there is a flooding worry. Although the discussions about disease are interesting. Measles and Whooping cough both have vaccines. However in the late seventies and early eighties many were vaccinated with a vaccine later found to not be effective. They had a revaccination programme in the mid nineties but anyone born in 1977 or earlier didn't qualify at the time. So you've a whole load of people in their late forties and early fifties who are vulnerable for measles, mumps and rubella. I got my MMR in my thirties when I found out.

Badgertime · 25/05/2024 21:44

Whu · 23/05/2024 22:36

Well the government did actually do a weird announcement yesterday morning about stockpiling 3 days food and water and other things ‘just in case’. It was then of course completely overshadowed by the election being called.

Yes, i thought they had. Can't remember where I saw it.

Wonderfulstuff · 25/05/2024 21:44

I think I've still got 4 bags of cauliflower in the freezer that were substituted for a fresh head of broccoli at the start of lockdown so we'll be OK just a bit farty.

Seriously though, 4 week supply makes sense given that we have brexit changes coming into force (why oh why did anyone vote for that shit show?), Houthis pissing about in the red sea, Russia trying to take control in the black sea and anywhere else that takes its fancy plus a dreadful season for UK farmers. Combine that with the ongoing cyber attacks that are taking place on supermarket payment systems and it doesn't take much to think that we are a very easy country to starve as is the tactic in Yemen, Palestine etc.

But to avoid my head from exploding I'm just going to pretty much carry on as normal.

Isinglass20 · 25/05/2024 21:46

Think you’re all missing the elephant in the room - Trump. Almost certainly likely to be the next President- the friend of Putin and other dictators
and certainly won’t support Ukraine.
I suspect Richi didn’t want to have to face up to him, societal misapprehension is based on the fear of what Trump will do or not do

Yep I had to have the MMR in my 30s on the advice of Public Health England (as it was then) for reasons that I won't go into. The vaccination nurse at my surgery said that it was open to anyone who wanted it but most people aren't aware of the issues with the older single vaccine. And honestly I wasn't either.

The photo below is an example of a copied text meant to look like it’s been posted by very different people (ie someone like you, a Palestinian supporter, an Israeli supporter and an LFC supporter in this example).

I think we’ve also seen this evidenced on Mumsnet this week with a number of posts about some unknown imminent disaster, purely designed to terrify people into not voting for an ‘unknown.’

this is a tactic we’ve also heard Rishi Sunak use in person. “The next few years are going to be both "dangerous" and "transformational" for the UK, the prime minister warned multiple times while rolling out sample pillars of his election manifesto”

Whomever you vote for just make sure you’re looking at facts and not being manipulated.

To think we are being lined up for something?
