I work in food supply chain.
Four of the 'big' grocery retailers have just asked to renegotiate at least four weeks min supply, as opposed to two.
This happened in Feb 2020 as well.
Lots of rhetoric about being on a war footing, from politicos.
And then Sunak essentially jumping ship yesterday, as though he knows there is a crisis on the horizon that he wants no part of.
There is no way that the Tories have a prayer in a July election.
So what do they know that they aren't telling us?

Hazmat suit

Im fairly certain this is to do with wet weather rather than war...

Our farms weren't able to plant wheat until about 8 weeks later than usual. This applies to other food. More will need to be imported.

I think the timing of the message about needing g to have enough drinking water, canned foods etc for three days was made to rattle us. The Tory's message is it's dangerous out there, but we will protect you. I personally feel that is simply untrue, but I think psychology derailing us en masse so that we are afraid to rock the boat at the July election and ensuring that we see the Tory's as the only safe pair of hands, which again personally i think is utter tripe, is the name of the game. I see that the utility bills are about to be reduced, but I firmly believe that if the Tories get back in, or indeed Labour they will have to go back up again. It's all electioneering in my view.

I'll buy that it sounds about right and it's going to be one hell of a dirty election from the Tories.

I’ll caveat this with saying I don’t think nuclear war is in any way imminent or what we’re all being ‘prepped’ for.

However I think it’s important to recognise that Russia have absolutely no issue with absolutely annihilating places beyond repair, look at what they’re currently doing in Kharkiv oblast.

Secondly it’s perfectly plausible that North Korea or Iran could be the trigger. (Absolutely NOT for those with a weak stomach) the recent Nuclear War - A Scenario by Annie Jacobsen and Informed by many highly informed experts outlines exactly how that might occur.

Although horrible, it's not annihilated beyond repair. It's in no way comparable to land being radioactive and nothing being able to safely live within miles for decades, centuries, maybe longer.

Iran has been acting pretty conservatively, especially re Israel. They have been far more conservative than Israel has. As I stated above, they don't have the economy to start a nuclear war. Any book is 18 months behind, we're talking about what's happening now.

The election has been called on 4th July, because the tories don’t want to waste their summer preparing for an election they know they will lose. Might as well call it now, lose their seats and get the summer off…

Exactly, they want the summer off! I was going to say that. :)

It’s not linked to the contaminated water situation in Devon is it? Could water supplies be targeted?

I was wondering why we were being advised to keep a stock of food AND WATER when we have water from the taps.

Knock off the mystery paranoia. You're not in on some secret, you just make yourself sound ignorant.

Eh? Just speculating like everyone else.

Did you mean to be so rude?

(Head tilt and tinkly laugh in your direction 🤭)

Your analysis here is not good, almost in its entirely. You have analysed almost every element and every nation's policy incorrectly.

Edit: sorry to be blunt

I’d say acts of ecocide such as blowing up hydroelectric dams and threatening nuclear power stations are pretty far up the list of things that leave a place uninhabitable. And having friends from Kharkiv I can safely tell you the Russians think nothing of destroying a place.

And the book is a hypothetical, not out of date (I say that as having read it) and focuses on NK not Iran who frankly don’t give a fuck about economy.

No, you have to actually nuke a place to make it uninhabitable. I've been to Ukraine many times, including Chernobyl. We also host a Ukrainian refugee - her husband is still there. I'm very familiar with what's happening, often before it reaches the UK.

What Russia is doing is shit, but it's nowhere near as bad as other things currently happening in the world.

All (non e)books are out of date. The publishing cycle is too long.

TheFirmBiscuit · 24/05/2024 19:58

It's going to be a toss up as to what gets us first war or climate change or probably a mixture of both. That said the big game changer is the Russian-China alliance which will only get stronger, with Russia effectively a vassal state. Combines the world's largest country and source of mineral wealth with the worlds' largest manufacturing powerhouse and population. China didn't want this war, they like trade and stability but Putin having started it already they can't let Russia lose. Or it's them next as far as the US is concerned.

Probably in the past St Petersburg troll factory posts would have weird non-native inflexions and phrases and be parroting a Kremlin line so were easy to spot. With AI they can cover those up. I had to crunch your reply to fully understand it ! Did 'it' get you right ?

The statement is making a lighthearted generalization, with a touch of stereotype, about British people and their writing.

Here's a breakdown:

With all due respect: This is a polite phrase used before expressing a disagreement or something that might be critical.
Bad grammar and linguistic errors: This refers to mistakes in writing, like using the wrong word or forgetting punctuation.
Indicate the poster is British: This suggests that because of the errors, the writer might be British.
Quite normal: This downplays the significance of the errors, saying they're not a big deal.
Quite possibly a graduate or a professional: This is a bit tongue-in-cheek, implying that even well-educated Brits might make occasional mistakes.

On the linguistic typo:

The statement uses "linguistic errors" which is more likely what they meant than "errors in linguistic typology."
Linguistic typology refers to the study of how languages classify things like nouns and verbs. Errors in that area would be very specific and unlikely in casual writing.

Overall, it's a playful remark suggesting that some Britons, regardless of education level, might make grammatical mistakes, but it doesn't necessarily reflect poorly on them.

AI didn't get it right because they didn't see that I corrected your "linguistic typos" to "linguistic errors" which is what you probably meant. "Typo" generally means spelling errors. Shortened from "typographical error" from typing pool days I think.

I am not being a critic of your writing for the sake of it - what you wrote - seriously, not lighthearted - is ill informed and jumping on a bandwagon. It is better to think for yourself rather than jump on a bandwagon.

So - and this is lighthearted - I wrote into AI "What will stop the wars?" and the reply was:
"The wars will not stop until the hating stops - hating between nations, and hating by those who are powerful but war mongering. Wise people will see this as a time for everyone to listen to others, and reflect on what they hear deeply, to find common ground, to be intelligent when working out the root causes of conflicts and to find fair, intelligent, humane and longlasting solutions, and, finally, to give the needs of all civilians everywhere priority over any unnecessary economic power struggles."

Nothing about trolls or language! Would you credit it?

My sister worked in ICU, which was filled up during the waves with people dying. Once the vaccine came along, the only people in there were unvaccinated.
My close friend all the way over in North Carolina had the same experience.
Both have retired from ICU since.

Much of what you wrote is untrue.
I am sorry that Covid hurt your feelings by making you feel unimportant. But you should refrain from posting poison.

I disagree. The only people I know of getting covid were the ones who were vaccinated like x5. Never been vaccinated and never had it and that goes for everyone I knew who weren't vaccinated, all of which worked through lockdown and not wfh.

You see my experience and your experience is different. My approach or experience might not be across the board and neither may yours.

Good science said that the vaccinations acted to prevent the serious complications, so did not prevent covid, but prevented the serious complications which led to such heartbreaking scenes in ICU. I think it is worth listening to someone who worked in the covid frontline, in ICU?

Lighten up and repeat the serenity prayer

"grant to us the serenity of mind to accept that which cannot be changed, courage to change that which can be changed, and wisdom to know the one from the other "

Can I change whether Putin decides to start a war - not a chance. Do I want to survive a nuclear war - no. Can I put some bottles of tap water in a dark place - yes. Since I can do fuck all about most of the things people worry about I'll get out in the sunshine when we have any and make the most of what we have.

Can't remember how many of these scares I've lived through but quite a few - and worrying made not a jot of difference to any of them.

And the quality gets worse, sick of buying so called fresh veg to have it go off in around 2 days, tomatoes are awful, have all but given up buying them, had some green beans the other day and never got to eat any of them as they were turning black and going slimy when I got them out of the fridge. Interestingly, the Tories aren't campaigning on the myriad success of Brexit!

I haven't had an issue with tomatoes. Only just started buying them as they are awful in winter obviously, but good now.

I suspect is there is Armageddon my family doesn’t really have the skill set to survive, and a few extra tins in the cupboard won’t make much difference to our chances.

But the tins and water might help in a natural disaster while we wait for relief aid. That seems sensible.

Mumsnet seems extra twitchy this week. Do we suspect bots may be trying to influence national mood in an election cycle. My Paranoia will extend that far.

I think that, that a little food store only goes so far in the case of serious things going down we will need to be able to survive on an ongoing basis, I would be out on day 3 raiding protein shake and medicines
