I work in food supply chain.
Four of the 'big' grocery retailers have just asked to renegotiate at least four weeks min supply, as opposed to two.
This happened in Feb 2020 as well.
Lots of rhetoric about being on a war footing, from politicos.
And then Sunak essentially jumping ship yesterday, as though he knows there is a crisis on the horizon that he wants no part of.
There is no way that the Tories have a prayer in a July election.
So what do they know that they aren't telling us?

I have just caught up with the lunacy on here. As an aside, you know a thread has gone beyond saving when DistinguishedSocialCommentator starts posting.

My sister worked in ICU, which was filled up during the waves with people dying. Once the vaccine came along, the only people in there were unvaccinated.
My close friend all the way over in North Carolina had the same experience.
Both have retired from ICU since.

Much of what you wrote is untrue.
I am sorry that Covid hurt your feelings by making you feel unimportant. But you should refrain from posting poison.

I agree. I have friends in the NHS and the unvaccinated conspiracy nuts that were in after vaccination was available were ridiculous. Calling it all fake, some even when they had it. Yet the conspiracy theorists call us sheeple for getting the 'poison filled chips' or 'experimental drugs' as the nut jobs called it.

Ok then. How does he feel about you posting his views on here? You are familiar with the Official Secrets Act?

The concept of the wife of the Head of an Intelligence Agency not only posting on MN but also identifying the role that her husband does is quite frankly one of the best things I’ve read all day 😂

@Fallenangelofthenorth
The main ones.
Every little helps.
This is not just...
Etc.

That sounds like a significant amount more stock to hold - is that even possible with our supply chain setup? Interested in the logistics side of things, where would you put that food - surely there's not warehousing capacity sitting around? Is it all stock or key products?

TheFirmBiscuit · 24/05/2024 17:04

I don't think there will ever be a kinetic war between the superpowers because if there was they don't need to escalate to nuclear, chemical or anything esle. They just cut internet cables, destroy satellites, disrupt critical systems with cyber or attack shipping lanes with proxies and we're in the dark. Which on one level is encouraging. Sort of mutually assured economic destruction where we all lose. All was good in Tesco btw - plenty of everything and a calm air on all the aisles !

Back when I was a poverty-stricken postgraduate student (no grants or loans, minute income from taking tutorials) and used to cycle around looking in the gutter for 1p or even 1/2p coins at the end of the month I still always managed to always have an emergency can of tuna and / or sardines, and a bag of porridge oats in store Just In Case. And baked beans, that can be, and sometimes were, eaten cold out of the tin.

Baked beans are a luxury item now aren't they? Well Heinz is anyway. I can't believe what they cost.

Read up on what those other countries are doing. That's what we should be doing. And also replacing Trident with something else because it's shit.

Also it won't be a nuclear war (unless North Korea decides to start it, which seems unlikely). It will be more of what we've seen already, drones and targeting energy and water supplies, and cyber warfare, and more powerful regular missiles.

The countries that have the manpower, weapons and money to start a nuclear war are Russia (who won't do it because they're old school in their fighting and don't actually want to destroy places beyond repair, they want to take them for land/empire), the US (who won't do it because they're not immediately threatened geographically, can't justify the cost to the US people for fighting foreign wars, and are like the Airbnb/Uber/Amazon of war because they just use other people's bases, they don't own their own stuff in the rest of the world), China (who won't do it because they prioritise the economy and war would kill it off, they will be happy to supply to both sides and remain relatively neutral in someone else's world war though), and India (who are focused on a population growth and development strategy and don't really care about anything outside India).

Iran, North Korea, etc., are all too small to actually start something, they wouldn't be able to finish it and they'd be decimated.

But it won't happen this year unless Israel loses its mind. There are too many elections happening to interfere in and that's what will be distracting everybody (over half the world's population is going to the polls this year).

Edited

I’ll caveat this with saying I don’t think nuclear war is in any way imminent or what we’re all being ‘prepped’ for.

However I think it’s important to recognise that Russia have absolutely no issue with absolutely annihilating places beyond repair, look at what they’re currently doing in Kharkiv oblast.

Secondly it’s perfectly plausible that North Korea or Iran could be the trigger. (Absolutely NOT for those with a weak stomach) the recent Nuclear War - A Scenario by Annie Jacobsen and Informed by many highly informed experts outlines exactly how that might occur.

She may be gullible and he is lying to her whilst living a double life. Explains away the long weekends on "business" where he can't say where he has been !

Mcvitieschoccybiscuit · 24/05/2024 17:09

Can I just clarify that my husband most certainly isn’t the head of the intelligence service and it was never me that suggested he had any knowledge of impending doom in the first instance 😂

You're in big trouble when he gets home as the internet will have pinged your data breach and one of his flunkies will have had to have a word.

I know a blacked out car keeps driving past my house. At least you all know to run to Tesco tonight and stock up on lentils.

Echobelly · 24/05/2024 17:16

I don't think it has to be anything specific, but there is a lot more supply chain instability than 10-20 years ago and people are starting to think about it more carefully now. I think Brexit might be most likely explanation as I think some border control aspects are changing now and are likely to cause delays for shipping of goods.

Woozerbug · 24/05/2024 17:19

My husband is very senior in a civil service capacity at the MoD. He clearly never tells me anything as it would be highly illegal but he HAS asked for our house to get stocked up he’s says ‘just in case’ for 4-6 weeks supply including water and window coverings. Still insists there’s nothing to worry about though 🤷🏼

I wonder if a Mumsnet thread is powerful enough to generate food shortages through panic buying. We shall see....

Election called on 4 July because Mrs Sunak wants to be able to go on holiday on 5 July - and her wish will be granted.

Even if this was true, and frankly I doubt it. Scaring people serves absolutely no purpose other than to make issues like panic buying worse and compounding issues that never existed in the first place.

DH works in defence manufacturing and testing, they’ve seen an uptick in orders but absolutely nothing pointing to imminent crisis (and they would).

There’s a bit of a whiff of Russian disinformation on MN today (probably the thing we’re at most risk of just now).
