I work in food supply chain.
Four of the 'big' grocery retailers have just asked to renegotiate at least four weeks min supply, as opposed to two.
This happened in Feb 2020 as well.
Lots of rhetoric about being on a war footing, from politicos.
And then Sunak essentially jumping ship yesterday, as though he knows there is a crisis on the horizon that he wants no part of.
There is no way that the Tories have a prayer in a July election.
So what do they know that they aren't telling us?

Poor old Sir Keir he's going to inherit a pretty broken state, people crying out for help and no money and a possible war. I don't envy his job one bit, but I do trust him. He is honest as the day is long.

I’d genuinely not bet any money that poor old kier is going to inherit anything and I’m really not sure he actually wants to. I think like Corbyn, kiers exactly where he wishes to be. Leading rhe opposition. Look at how he’s started, he shitting it, had to come clean he isn’t going to do any of his pledges and ducking debates. I’d put money kiers going to try really fucking hard not to win.

cremebrulait · 24/05/2024 16:03

OP are you just trying to wind people up?
What is the point of the post? NOTHING.

And the updated website - it was the journalists digging for drama. It's a website about preparedness. you know what - the UK was f-ing behind if it didnt have one.

Canada
https://www.getprepared.gc.ca/cnt/kts/bsc-kt-eng.aspx

France
https://www.info.gouv.fr/risques/se-preparer-a-une-situation-durgence

Australia
https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/preparing-for-natural-disasters?context=60042

Every US state has one.. .

This was a wind up by the journalists. That's it.

Basic Emergency Kit

Basic items you will need to survive for 72 hours.

@marie3e
They've made a website 'Prepare'

prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

I only found out about it from someone's Twitter.

Given that we've just had the Northern Lights visible in much of the UK including the south, I wonder if they're worried about something like a Carrington Event - a massive solar storm that would knock out the internet and things like electronic tills, stock ordering systems etc. It would probably take a while to get everything back online and Tesco etc wouldn't be the priority if something like that happened. When it happened in 1859 it knocked out the telegraph network - we're much more reliant on tech now.

The Carrington Event: History's greatest solar storm

Extreme solar storms such as the 1859 Carrington Event can play havoc with technology on Earth.

Part of our front wall is a WW2 snipers bunker, I might have to station myself there but I’ve only got brollies. Maybe I should follow your lead with the torches @cattery,

Yes. Dazzle em with the torches whilst lobbing toilet rolls

My husband reckons that there will be a war in Europe against Putin. Not just Ukraine, but most/all of Europe.

He's concerned about the government's (present and future) stance on the defence budget, which has been slashed over the past few years.

DeanElderberry · 24/05/2024 16:07

You're being lined up for a General Election. The UK is the only country that is suddenly getting scary messaging this week. It is embarrassing clunky 'only more of the same can save us, change is dangerous' nonsense.

I think the pertinent point here is ‘who’ is your husband?

There was one last week and will be another one in a few days. They were quite big, but they don’t know how big or the impact until 20 min before.

Iamawomenphenominally · 24/05/2024 16:14

This is a terrifying read when you suffer with anxiety. 😔

I barely scraped through the whole COVID /lockdowns saga mental health wise and I'm still not back to how I was before.

I'm torn between making a list of stockpiling items or googling easy ways out tbvh.

Yeah, the rest of us already have plans for this by our governments. It’s just UK being a bit behind, and scared by it. To us it’s just sensible, but you just seem to be pissed off that you suddenly have to take some responsibility of your own. In another thread someone wrote that they thought the government should provide all households with a torch and water. It’s just laughable really.

badatdecisions · 24/05/2024 16:19

What else should we be doing to prepare for war than we are already doing. We have our nuclear deterrent, what else should we do? In a nuclear war there’ll be no winners anyway.

Read up on what those other countries are doing. That's what we should be doing. And also replacing Trident with something else because it's shit.

Also it won't be a nuclear war (unless North Korea decides to start it, which seems unlikely). It will be more of what we've seen already, drones and targeting energy and water supplies, and cyber warfare, and more powerful regular missiles.

The countries that have the manpower, weapons and money to start a nuclear war are Russia (who won't do it because they're old school in their fighting and don't actually want to destroy places beyond repair, they want to take them for land/empire), the US (who won't do it because they're not immediately threatened geographically, can't justify the cost to the US people for fighting foreign wars, and are like the Airbnb/Uber/Amazon of war because they just use other people's bases, they don't own their own stuff in the rest of the world), China (who won't do it because they prioritise the economy and war would kill it off, they will be happy to supply to both sides and remain relatively neutral in someone else's world war though), and India (who are focused on a population growth and development strategy and don't really care about anything outside India).

Iran, North Korea, etc., are all too small to actually start something, they wouldn't be able to finish it and they'd be decimated.

But it won't happen this year unless Israel loses its mind. There are too many elections happening to interfere in and that's what will be distracting everybody (over half the world's population is going to the polls this year).

Mcvitieschoccybiscuit · 24/05/2024 16:22

Aren’t supermarkets always busy on a Friday?

Do we really think there’s been a scenario: “PM MI6 have intelligence that there’s going to be a nuclear attack in 3 months”. “Oh shit fuck that let’s call an election and when labour get in those that are left can blame them.” I mean I’m sure it’s not out of the realms of possibility but surely they’d be busy with other stuff than posing with babies and putting leaflets through doors?

TheFirmBiscuit · 24/05/2024 16:25

I'm off to Tesco I shall check on the battery situation and report back !

What exactly does being on a war footing mean these days though?

Some people without jobs protesting with banners about something they don’t understand, posting copied and pasted soundbites onto the ‘Gram.

love your username

On one hand I'd love to witness a Carrington Event becauseit coulc be spectacular, but on the other hand it would really mess things up 😂

Because there are no other more likely scenarios in between. But you’d have to think for yourself then.

Your analysis here is not good, almost in its entirely. You have analysed almost every element and every nation's policy incorrectly.

Edit: sorry to be blunt

Please don’t worry. These types of posts appear frequently, usually by posters who claim to be “in the know” but are actually looking forward to stirring the pot via faux thread popularity. Have a lovely BH weekend and enjoy the sunshine 🌞

Head of intelligence agency.

Flyinghighhighinthesky · 24/05/2024 16:45

I once worked with the wife of a senior police officer. He used to say that if the public knew half of what was going on "behind the scenes" they wouldn't sleep at night. Situations get dealt with as part of a day's work for them and most of us never know about it.

I like my sleep so I'm happy to go with the flow until I'm told otherwise.

PupInAPram · 24/05/2024 16:46

@afterfive that was exactly my point. OP asked if we are being 'lined up for something'. Well no. We're just being encouraged to be ready for mundane stuff like short term power or water cuts, bad weather etc.
