The age of conscription should be lowered to 16

The world looks much less stable than it has for a long while. In the event of war our depleted armed forces will need all the help they can get. We should lower the age of conscription to 16?

OP posts:

🙄

WittiestUsernameEver · 23/05/2024 15:54

Oh yes, let's send children to war.... Great idea.

Sparklesocks · 23/05/2024 15:55

Having a slow afternoon?

Arlanymor · 23/05/2024 15:56

We don’t have conscription, it was phased out in 1960. Because it’s horrible and immoral.

KnickerlessParsons · 23/05/2024 15:56

Lower it from what? We don't currently conscript anyone, but you can already join up at 16.

Singleandproud · 23/05/2024 15:56

Don't be daft. Conscription is shockingly unlikely anyway but you don't lower the age until you run out of actual adult people. And then as happened in the past they are likely to lower the age for those in cadets first many of which are young but very experienced and already hold pilots licenses and the background knowledge they need.

This thread doesn't quite fit with your username @Lovepeaceunderstanding

x2boys · 23/05/2024 15:57

Yeah well thankfully my son wouldn't pass the medical
Is this for girls too
Or is it just boys you want to conscripted ?

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 23/05/2024 15:58

Don’t be so ridiculous. You join up if you’re that bothered.

crumblingschools · 23/05/2024 15:58

@Lovepeaceunderstanding are you volunteering to go to war?

mpsw · 23/05/2024 15:59

We don't have conscription, there are no plans to introduce it, so why on earth are you mithering on about theoretical age of something non-existent?

Gemmahearts94 · 23/05/2024 15:59

Wow! My son is 10 and is currently out playing with cousin, he will then come in jump onto his bed full of squishmallows, play with his jurrasic world figures and have turkey dinosaurs for dinner, you reckon in 6 years he should be going to war? Get a bloody grip

Beezknees · 23/05/2024 16:00

I don't want my 16 year old going off to war, thanks.

Sparklesocks · 23/05/2024 16:00

Why stop at sixteen? Primary school kids would be great, their little hands can really get into the intricate weapon controls. And I'm sure you could train a toddler to hit a drone lever if you gave them a chocolate button each time they get a hit. Innovation!

FacingTheWall · 23/05/2024 16:00

We don’t have conscription, and we’ve long since moved past sending children to war.

MermaidEyes · 23/05/2024 16:01

Prisons are full to bursting, we can ship some of them off first.

trippily · 23/05/2024 16:01

We should raise the age you can sign up to 21. Signing up at 15/16 is fucking immoral and backwards.

TorturedPoets · 23/05/2024 16:01

What conscription? Are you not in the U.K?

AlexaPlaySomeHappyHardcore · 23/05/2024 16:02

They can’t even vote at 16 so no, absolutely not. They are children at 16.

I think the first up for conscription should be the ones who are in favour of it in the first place. Like you OP.

Magnastorm · 23/05/2024 16:02

No. Don't be stupid.

Zwicky · 23/05/2024 16:03

We don’t have conscription - there isn’t an age for it to be lowered.

You can start your application to join the British Army at 15 years 7 months.

BigGlassHouseWithAView · 23/05/2024 16:03

Wind ‘em up and watch them go.

Mockingjay123 · 23/05/2024 16:04

Conscription would need to include both males and females- It is 2024 after all and anything less would be blatant sexism. I don’t personally agree with it anyway, especially for 16 year olds who aren’t even adults.

FruTbun · 23/05/2024 16:05

In 1976 I joined the Royal Navy - 2 days after my 16th Birthday. I served our country for 24 years with no regrets.

ToastonEggs · 23/05/2024 16:06

Currently you can join the military after 16 but my understanding is you can’t be sent to war till 18 because we’re not in the business of sending children to war. There’s also currently no conscription and shit really has to hit the fan for this to change

Icannoteven · 23/05/2024 16:07

Let’s just stop volunteering other people’s children to be used as disposable resources, shall we? You want to join in a war? Fine, go join up.
