The age of conscription should be lowered to 16

The world looks much less stable than it has for a long while. In the event of war our depleted armed forces will need all the help they can get. We should lower the age of conscription to 16?

WE DONT HAVE IT!!! You’re arguing about something that doesn’t exist and as I’ve already pointed out, both men and women are able to join the Amy. But as a side point, who do you think decided only boys and men should be called up in the past? I’ll give you a clue, it wasn’t women.

Do you actually have to be so bad mannered when trying to put a point across? The capital letters? Really?

Karatema · 24/05/2024 15:09

Many teenagers would join up voluntarily! This has happened in every war the UK had been involved in so many of the MNers saying they wouldn't let their DC go wouldn't know until they come home saying they've signed up!

I am absolutely delighted that 98% of you disagree with me! 16 year olds are children.
I am concerned about impending war though.

Anyone with a single freaking brain cell would "disagree".

They didn't even conscript 16 year olds in WW1 (although plenty that age and younger volunteered, looking at you Great Uncle F) and that was a ground war reliant on large numbers of troops and where many of those kids would have been in the workforce for at least a couple of years. Any war now ("impending" or otherwise) that directly affects the UK certainly won't need underage soldiers dragged from their GCSEs.

Phoebefail · 24/05/2024 16:13

In WW2 The Germans did conscript 16 yr olds and evidence of
15yr olds on Eastern Front and Battle of The Bulge.

BMW6 · 24/05/2024 16:59

Yes but I think only towards the end when they were fucked and knew it.

Phoebefail · 24/05/2024 17:53

@BMW6 Exactly so. Sheer desperation to keep the Allies out of Germany and give time to negotiate a cease fire. To avoid the total surrender and humiliation that happened in 1945.
So what I wonder made the OP start this Thread. What event was the trigger?

Quite. What the German command did to their kids at the end of WW2, sending 16 year olds out to face the enraged Red Army, is not something any decent society would willingly emulate.

MrsTerryPratchett · 24/05/2024 20:04

Costa Rica once said they'd send out their Boy Scouts when they were threatened (no standing army).

FrancisSeaton · 24/05/2024 22:14

So many brave young men like my grandad lied about their age so they COULD go and fight for their country- bits of kids who most likely had no idea what they would be facing and the implications

StormingNorman · 24/05/2024 22:15

Absolutely not. If you can’t vote for your government, you shouldn’t be expected to fight its wars.

Frozenblox · 24/05/2024 22:16

You can fuck right off. I don’t want my boy forced into fighting a war to line the pockets of others.

Not just 'traditional' war, how many teenagers went to join ISIS from western counties?

They see it as a big adventure.

Well Sunak thinks 18 is the right age.

So all you mums can stop panicking about your 16 year old darlings. They get another 2 years laying in bed all day.

They wouldn't be doing it at any age.

Mine's been out volunteering at the riding stables today. Something that he is interested in, not something the government want to force him to do.

Have you got children/sons? Why should 16 year olds are are considered children legally in so many ways and are not even allowed to vote on how their Government behaves be forced to go to war? Fuck that. There should be no conscription and you can bet all those dickheads at the top of the UK Government will find a way to ensure that THEIR children and those of their wealthy cronies and supporters do not ever have to participate in any conflict should conscription arise.

Go Crazy Wtf GIF

You want to send children to war because there aren’t enough adults?

Wtafdidido · 09/11/2024 12:12

Any war will involve the rich getting richer and protecting themselves and their families while the normal average Brit becomes the sacrificial lamb

over the top charge GIF by US National Archives

Dulce et Decorum Est

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs,
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots,
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of gas-shells dropping softly behind.

Gas! GAS! Quick, boys!—An ecstasy of fumbling
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time,
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime.—
Dim through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.

In all my dreams before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams, you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,—
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.”

Wilfred Owen, 1920

5128gap · 09/11/2024 12:23

No. If God forbid it ever came to that I'd sooner go myself with the rest of my generation than send children with their lives ahead of them.

Presumably this thread has been reanimated because it is Remembrance weekend, and a good time to pause to remember the horrors of war?
