Rishi due to tell us at 5pm what the date is - smart money on 4th July perhaps pressaging his inevitable departure for the USA.

And?

IClaudine · 22/05/2024 21:59

This is hilarious. Tories trying to cancel the GE! What a shower of scum they are.

For those not on Twitter,:

Wow! Extraordinary but true - some furious Conservative MPs are tonight working on a plot to CALL OFF the general election by replacing Rishi Sunak as leader before Parliament is dissolved next Thursday.
One rebel Tory MP tells me he believes “several” more letters of no confidence in Sunak have been submitted to 1922 chairman Sir Graham Brady.
The MP: “Today has clearly been an absolute disaster but the election is NOT irrevocable; up until the point of the Dissolution of Parliament - when the writs are moved to begin the contests, it can still be aborted.
“In other words, if enough Tory MPs, who are clearly going to lose their seats in this already utterly shambolic campaign, write to Sir Graham Brady, tomorrow , the election could still be revoked.”

If they succeed they're really in the mire. Read the room, we've all had enough.

I think there would be a huge uproar if they tried this

At least I hope so!

Yes I am very pleased

Totally embarrassed and fuming how they treated our PM - the stupid childish Labour noise has reinforced my reasons to vote Conservative

A very appropriate username there

😂

It’s not what she’s supposedly done that bothers me - I’m not interested in how she sold her house.

No one is fit to represent their country who calls people ‘scum’.

I think the Tories have called the working classes a lot worse than that over the years, including while they were partying

Soukmyfalafel · 22/05/2024 23:04

Hmm interesting.

Why does everybody think he's called it now.? I'm very dubious. My thoughts are:

-The boats aren't going to stop in the summer, stats will be released in autumn and they are losing voters to Reform rapidly
-whilst inflation has dipped, more Brexshit red-tape/greedy shit house water companies are going to increase inflation again
-NHS continues to decline with winter bed pressures looming in the autumn
-ICC, Netanyahu and Hamas. We supplied weapons to countries commiting war crimes.
-seems like there is a scandal each week, but these scandals have crossed both Labour and Tory governments, so an opportunity ro drag Labour down with them
-more defections and no confidence vote looming, so he's thrown a tantrum and called a GE
-the gravy train has run out of gravy
-he knows something mighty shit we don't and wants out
-his India trade deal is now sorted, why stay?
-the press are about to turn in favour of Labour (can't see this happening personally)

What are everyone else's thoughts on the thing that swung it for him? It wasn't for the good of the British public, that's for sure. I'm very intrigued.

Funny how my first thought is "what the fuck is this guy upto?"

Well I suppose they need at least one person to vote for them as a token gesture for taking part.

BIossomtoes · 22/05/2024 23:09

That’s kind of where I’m at and hoping I’m wrong. I think it’s also that it’s become abundantly obvious that his bribes tax cuts are unaffordable and the recent cut in NI may well have to be reversed. He can’t face the flak.

boys3 · 22/05/2024 23:13

@Soukmyfalafel it seems to have taken most of his own party by surprise. Maybe he just thought that he can’t see things getting much better and time to stop clutching at straws and just get on with it.

Inflation was down today, but less than expected. Core inflation hardly moved. More likely won’t be a base rate cut in June.

or maybe as there are six months in the second half of the year, he numbered each month, so July 1 and December 6, then just rolled a dice, it came up 1. Decision made and July it is.

Soukmyfalafel · 22/05/2024 23:15

I'm so looking forward to the desperate Tory bot posts over the next few weeks. It's going to be fun. I'm not even sure who to vote for yet. Not massively sold on Labour, but I'm not going to fall for the pathetic scare tactic approach the Tories seem to have gone for. It's primitive in this day and age. I havent been able to take them seriously in the last few weeks when Rishi has been doing his little scare speeches. I'm most scared of them staying in power, which renders this approach a bit pointless.

Martinii · 22/05/2024 23:22

Genuine question, do they calculate people living on the poverty line before or after their benefit entitlement?
I ask because I was considered in poverty on statistics; recieved the benefits, got free dental/prescriptions etc. My income was less then 15k but I worked term time only 30 hours a week. I now work 37 hours full time, earn 31 k but take home less than before plus receive no free dental/prescription.

Just curious because when I was considered in poverty I had more income due to benefit top ups than working full time, paying more tax and entitlement to little, even though my take home each month is marginal.

Pepsiisbetterthancoke · 22/05/2024 23:28

Things Can Only Get Better is already at number 9 on the iTunes chart. No doubt will be higher by the end of the week. Lots of people have obviously been celebrating tonight

Nailed on banger. In fact I might get it on Spotify now, relive the 90s.

anotherside · 22/05/2024 23:42

I will celebrate the Tories getting kicked out. I’m going to spend the next 6 weeks trying to kid myself that Starmer won’t just govern as a one nation Tory type thing, but I know that he will. The Tories will be in again in 2035 if not before and nothing will have changed much at all. They’ll pick up where they left off.

If you care about the environment and think that the Tory/ Labour MP & Policy swapping is all a bit pointless then vote Green. They’ve no chance under the FPTP system and so it will be a wasted vote in the sense that it won’t change anything. But the same can be said for Starmer and new New Labour.

Martinii · 22/05/2024 23:51

I hoped labour would get in in 2010, so they could clean up the financial shitshow they left. I'm curious to see how they'll handle things now without a healthy economy to inherit...

What do you mean by housing minister department @Mummy2024 ? How can they say what a Labour government will do?

Labour have said were looking at a decade to do anything 😆. What are Labour going to do? I don't know either because they don't say lol

Nope, I told you the news reporter told a labour mp they were.... which they did.
