To think you shouldn't say she's ON the toilet

I hate when DH says 'she's on the toilet' instead of 'she's in the bathroom' or 'she'll be back in a min, she's gone to the loo' or similar

I've heard him say it a good few times most recently over the weekend. I do tell him I don't like it, he doesn't see why.

This is meant in a light hearted way! It does not occupy much of my brain

YABU - It's a perfectly normal thing to say
YANBU - Bit graphic

Wouldn't bother me.
If he was to say something actually vile like ' she's on the loo curling one out' then I'd be pissed off.
But to be honest, on the toilet doesn't mean having a poo. Us women sit to pee too

Wiunthoopered · 22/05/2024 17:35

We say in the loo.

lol, do you not see the irony of your comment?

👏 Nothing gets past you!

katebushh · 22/05/2024 21:59

I say it to v close family because it's funny, imo!

DiduAye · 23/05/2024 17:53

If he's a farmer it could be worse!

I use ‘temporarily indisposed’

North America? Got one friend from the USA uses restroom and one from Canada who says washroom

At least they seem to have lost 'comfort station' for a loo in a public space.

When I first met my now late OH he would say he was off to point Percy at the porcelain.

steff13 · 23/05/2024 18:06

"OP can't come to the phone right now, can I take a message," seems sufficient. It's what was common here (US) when landline phones were the norm. If it was your cell, he should let it to to voicemail.

WaitingForMojo · 22/05/2024 10:01

Is your dh from the North West of England? I’ve heard this there, and it does jar, but I think it might be regional?

Ohhhhh…I was like ‘YABVU, I’ve said this thousands of times in my life’ and then saw your comment, @WaitingForMojo. Fascinated to know if this is a NW thing!

I mean, whether you’re in the loo or on the loo, they’re both just nicer ways of saying, “Give ‘er a minute, she’s taking a slash.” 😂

CatsnCoffeeetal · 23/05/2024 18:19

This! I was always brought up with ‘in the toilet’ and we would always (privately) cringe and laugh when an acquaintance of ours used the phrase ‘on the toilet’ to indicate the location (activity?Yuck!) of her grown up son!
When I met my DH a few years later, I cringed again when I heard his DM use the same phrase. Call me a snob, but it sounds so ignorant. She has no self-awareness about it and will say it to anyone eg ‘Sorry, I couldn’t answer the door sooner:I was on the toilet’ (Eugh!). The fact that she’s so aspirational and judgmental in other ways makes it particularly ironic.

LadyEloise1 · 23/05/2024 18:26

I'm Irish and I've never heard that @pontipinemum.
Both my parents were from rural backgrounds and never used it.
Yes it's a bit graphic.

Anele22 · 23/05/2024 18:34

I can’t stand it. My parents-in-law say it very loudly in front of lots of people.
where is Anele22?

She’s ON the toilet!

Nobody needs to know.

rosemarylavendar · 23/05/2024 18:47

I think that’s a bit of a precious reaction — on the toilet is a very normal phrase and I don’t get why it’s offensive that someone might be on the toilet / using the bathroom / using the restroom - whatever you want to call it. Big deal.

INeedToClingToSomething · 23/05/2024 18:57

Catsmere · 22/05/2024 10:02

I've rarely heard that version and would probably say "she's at the loo", but it wouldn't bother me. I dislike "in the bathroom" more because it sounds like that coy Americanism, and all my life the toilet and the bathroom were separate rooms.

“She’s at the loo” gives me an immediate picture of someone standing next to a toilet unsure what to do 😂😂😂

gingersnapdrop · 23/05/2024 18:57

So vivid! He’s a veritable Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

BooBooDoodle · 23/05/2024 19:13

Cumbrian here, bathrooms are usually where you go to use the loo so we usually say, I’m going for a wee/pee or going to the loo/lav/bog. Never heard anyone say I’m going to the bathroom, they are in the bathroom. Get the piss taken, pun intended, and asked who you thought you were. Why are people such wet wipes over this stuff? Seriously not arsed at all. Tell me you’re going for a shit or shout you’re doing a shit whilst having one and I’d respect you more!

Birdcloud · 23/05/2024 19:18

My husband’s from Notts and he says ‘on’. I didn’t like it to start with, but 38 years later we are both going for a wee …

JudgeJ · 23/05/2024 19:19

toomanytonotice · 22/05/2024 12:17

on the toilet is a completely normal thing to say!

I can’t be doing with all the pussy footing like bathroom or restroom. You’re not going for a bath or a rest! There’s no bath and who would want to sit or lie and rest in a toilet area, even if there was seating.

it’s all very Hyacinth Bucket.

TOILET TOILET TOILET.

I think that Hyacinth would say lavatory, as per the National Trust!

JustMeAndTheFish · 23/05/2024 19:26

I ring my elderly dad every day and if it takes a while for him to pick up he invariably says “I was just on the toilet”. I keep suggesting that he may like to come up with another greeting because it’s not always me on the end of the line 🤣

usernother · 23/05/2024 20:14

I absolutely hate the use of bathroom instead of loo/toilet. I don't think it matters if he says on the toilet. I'd say 'in the loo' though.

Etincelle · 23/05/2024 20:31

I'd prefer "in the bathroom" but our only loo is in the bathroom with a bath in.

I entirely agree......I would say "in the loo" or "having a pee" or "spending a penny" depending to whom I was speaking....

Notsurewhatiswhat · 23/05/2024 20:35

Wizardcalledoz · 22/05/2024 10:05

The loo is the equipment you're using, if you're in it, then you're using it wrong. It is only a bathroom if there's a bath in it!

Learned this the hard way with my son.

Go and wash your hands.
Where?
In the toilet!

Did not think for a second he’d walk pass the sink and actually wash them in the toilet.

Wolfpa · 23/05/2024 20:37

could be worse, you could be dropping the kids off at the pool.
