To think you shouldn't say she's ON the toilet

I hate when DH says 'she's on the toilet' instead of 'she's in the bathroom' or 'she'll be back in a min, she's gone to the loo' or similar

I've heard him say it a good few times most recently over the weekend. I do tell him I don't like it, he doesn't see why.

This is meant in a light hearted way! It does not occupy much of my brain

YABU - It's a perfectly normal thing to say
YANBU - Bit graphic

I come from a part of the world where we say bathroom, washroom, restroom or ladies room. They all mean toilet. But literally no one would ever say "toilet". Way too literal and graphic.

North America? Got one friend from the USA uses restroom and one from Canada who says washroom

B1anche · 22/05/2024 12:12

I used to work with someone who actually used to say that she was off to "wet her beard" whenever she visited the loo.

123dogdog · 22/05/2024 12:12

I tend to say on the toilet. Sometimes I use ‘otherwise engaged’ in a sort of imaginary posh/trying to be polite but also amusing way 😂

I would never say in the bathroom, lavatory or loo.

I would say in the shower, if they’re in the bathroom but not on the toilet.

Princesspollyyy · 22/05/2024 12:17

This reminds me of the time years and years ago my dad was in the bathroom, and the landline rang. My brother answered it, it was the bank...

"Sorry he's on the toilet"

My dad was really cross. He told my brother off and said he shouldn't say someone is 'on the toilet' as it's rude 😂😂😂😂

toomanytonotice · 22/05/2024 12:17

on the toilet is a completely normal thing to say!

I can’t be doing with all the pussy footing like bathroom or restroom. You’re not going for a bath or a rest! There’s no bath and who would want to sit or lie and rest in a toilet area, even if there was seating.

it’s all very Hyacinth Bucket.

TOILET TOILET TOILET.

But what is that reason? I genuinely don't understand!

Well, ask yourself why we want privacy to do those things? It’s an extension of that, I suppose. It’s interesting that there are some things for which we want to maintain a degree of privacy, even though we all know everyone does them. I can’t pretend to know why - it is what it is!

Carly944 · 22/05/2024 12:33

I guess it depends on the culture.

i say "John is in the toilet". Cause I refer to the whole toilet room as "the toilet"

I thought It was a totally normal thing to say .

Then I went to Canada for a summer. They thought it was a really strange thing to say.

A guy asked where my boyfriend was. I said "he's in the toilet"

The guy told me that he didn't need that much information about someone.

:)

Yes I found that the Canadians thought that the word "toilet" was very graphic and offensive.

Isn't it interesting!

IbisDancer · 22/05/2024 12:36

It’s not that bad, I’ve heard “so and so is taking a shit” or “having a dump”, but I agree it’s not very nice. I prefer the “gone to powder her nose” euphemism for women and “seeing a man about a dog” for men.

mitogoshi · 22/05/2024 12:39

In the loo is ok but only at a certain level of familiarity! Thankfully due to the advent of mobile phones we don't have this issue anymore, if I'm not there to answer the phone it goes to voicemail and vice versa

Toomanyemails · 22/05/2024 12:42

I agree with you! In my language, "on" is the right thing to say and you just wouldn't think of it literally like I would when speaking english - we also say "I go/am on the cinema", "on the restaurant" so it's just how the language works. People from Scandinavian countries often directly translate it when speaking English. Then English speakers often say "in the toilet" when speaking the local language which sounds strange, like you are literally inside. Not relevant to your question but a dull language fact for you there!

The powder her nose saying, I always thought it referred to the woman going to do drugs in the toilets 😂 never going to use the toilet in the conventional sense.

i hate the term spend a penny, boak.

Sometimes I say in the toilet, because whoever is say washing their hands in our downstairs toilet. Rather than being on the toilet.

GrandTheftWalrus · 22/05/2024 12:48

Meh, I actually announce to my dh that "I'm going for a shite" so this wouldn't bother me. However I do say I need to pop to the loo when out in company.

Summertimer · 22/05/2024 12:49

It’s better than saying ‘pee’

It seems to be common place now, but when I was growing up in the 70s it was vulgar, man in pub terminology 😂

Our neighbour’s little girl slightly misheard a similar expression once and seems to say she’s going tooleloo

Itsjustmyusername · 22/05/2024 12:49

I agree with you op. It’s in the loo or otherwise engaged here. Unless it’s my DH talking to me and then I get a full description of the situation he’s dealing with!!

CactusMactus · 22/05/2024 13:01

Better than "she's having a shit".

Maddy70 · 22/05/2024 13:09

I always say "she's on the loo" Maybe it is a regional thing

Catsmere · 22/05/2024 13:14

WimpoleHat · 22/05/2024 11:27

Lol I often say I'm just popping to the loo.

I do too, at home, to my kids or whatever. But I wouldn’t say it in a formal meeting, or to people I didn’t know very well.

Interesting - I would always say (and have, quite recently) "Excuse me, I need to use the toilet," partly because it's not a publicly accessible one, partly because I need to go frequently and am not remotely embarrassed by saying so. Never have been since I hit double figures.

SeriaMau · 22/05/2024 13:14

So many red flags here. Time to consider your future. Perhaps consult a solicitor? Are your finances secure, OP? You deserve so much better than this.

Catsmere · 22/05/2024 13:17

Wizardcalledoz · 22/05/2024 12:05

So you have a shower room then, or a toilet/loo!

It could be the Room of Ablutions and Random Storage if I wanted to be really accurate! The cats' litter and carry cages are in there along with the washing basket and sundry mops. 😄

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 22/05/2024 13:23

I also say.. if someone asks where they are...I would never say they are at the bathroom as it's not commonly used in my area. I also say ahh they are on the loo or they are at the toilet. Depending on who is asking.
I work in the nursing profession and we're obsessed with bodily functions so at work we are sometimes too open about our loo situations.
It also must be a north east of England thing as most people I know say the same thing.

But if you don't like it I would just say to your OH

Haveanaiceday · 22/05/2024 13:24

I guess it depends who he is telling, but if it's not necessary for them to know where you are then I would prefer he say you had just stepped out for a few minutes or something like that. I don't want some random people knowing I'm in the toilet.

TOILET TOILET TOILET.

Lots of toilet rooms do have both a toilet and a bath in them though! Thus bathroom is accurate.

Millions of peoples live in houses with just 1 toilet and its in the bathroom!

EarlHickey · 22/05/2024 13:26

We've lost sight of how to say we're having a dump
