Londoners have absolutely decimated my city

NC as really outing.
I'm a musician and over the years I have seen what was a steady stream of londoners turn into a flood this year.
I'm so gutted. I know everybody has the right to live here but it has pushed so many of my friends out, artists and other musicians. It pisses me off that the whole reason these londoners moved here, they are also destroying.
I'm lucky as my landlord is really decent and hasn't put my rent up in years, so I can afford to stay here. But now I'm considering just leaving because of the vibe factor. It makes me really sad. I still gig a few times a week but the crowd is different. I miss my community, but now everybody is scattered as everyone who was pushed out has gone to different places.
I'm considering just jumping ship and moving on myself but I don't know where to go.
Today some more londoners moved into the street...The whole street is full of scaffolding as they seem to really love doing home improvements 😅
I know I sound really bitter. I guess I am. I don't know whether to stay or go, and of I go, where to?

@Whothefuckdoesthat
It’s quite funny really, because people from towns and cities all over Britain have absolutely decimated the London that I know and love, moving there to make their money, pushing housing prices up so that the locals are forced to leave, gentrifying the character out of everything, calling themselves Londoners, then as soon as they have kids, moving back out because it’s not safe enough to raise their precious darlings there, or have them associating with the few local families that have managed to cling on.

exactly this, I was born and raised in the east end, no way I could afford to live there after uni. I also think the wanky hipster vibe it now has would've destroyed my soul. (Very similar to Brighton tbh)
Most people I know in similar situations moved to Herts, Essex, North Kent, where are we supposed to go OP?

I hear you OP. but as others have said, people have been doing this for 25 years. Theyve also been moving from Brighton to Hastings for years because supposedly it's on the up. it still seems a bit shit there though.
I managed to get a place in Brighton and im on a low wage as is my dp, we nearly moved to hastings with the others 20 years ago. so glad we didnt

My friend is originally from London. She moved here years ago, but still has childhood friends in London. Many Londoners can't afford to live where they're from (London), in no small part because people from other parts of the UK (including Brighton and Hastings) have for years been moving to London... What are Londoners expected to do? Some, like my friend wanted to move somewhere else, but others don't or can't (jobs or family commitments).

I find the contradictory attitudes on here and offline bemusing. It's not only towards Londoners. It's directed at people in other areas too. People can't afford housing in their area or there's limited work opportunities in their area, so they're told to move away, but if they take that advice they're told they're unwelcome.

Unless the root causes (better work, education, and training opportunities, and more social housing everywhere) are addressed the issues will just get worse.

How do you know they are "londoners" (whatever that means).

People from London I assume..

coloursquare · 18/05/2024 15:48

To the person/people who suggested Liverpool. It's one of the most wonderful and vintage cities in the world. Not sure it's waiting around for the OP to teach it about creativity.....GrinConfused

NotSentFromIphone · 18/05/2024 15:48

If they're buying to live there permanently then that's just tough really but if it's holiday home use only I feel your pain.

But how’s the vibe?

Expensive with slightly too short a trouser leg. And then there is the stabby gang side of things...just delightful

Please don’t move to York as you sound like a patronising twat

OP went be able to afford York.
Have you seen the house prices?

Hermione7 · 18/05/2024 15:52

Brighton is a real mess, a few home improvements wouldn't go amiss & substitute 'Londoners ' for another group of people and it sounds racist 🤷‍♀️

Deal in Kent. They even use the term DFL ‘Down From London’. A friend brought a lovely cottage there that she Airbnb’s half the year in order to pay the mortgage. She has spent a lot of money doing it up.

She loves her cottage but realises that together with all the other DFLs she is making it unaffordable for locals.

Everywhere south of London uses 'down from london'. And when I lived in Manchester it was 'up from london'.

The issues around housing, the scarcity of housing, the high cost of renting etc etc. comes down to lack of social housing, restricted supply from private devlopers, profiteering in the private rental sector and the purchase of second homes/AirBnBs.

We need to address those root causes nationally, with particular attention paid to areas such as e.g. SW where second home ownership has trashed communities.

I understand the impact on your area is hard, the individuals moving to your area are not the issue though, the whole problem needs to be addressed.

Absolutely this!

localnotail · 18/05/2024 15:56

This is hilarious. So, Londoners are not people? They cant be a community? Or you only want SPECIAL people to be your community?

I know a family currently moving from London to Brighton - they are actually not from London, they came here when they were young, and now have a family and are moving on to a more family-friendly and affordable area where they can afford for their DC to have separate bedrooms and a garden. So should I tell them to stay because you are upset? Because they will want to renovate the outdated terraced house they buying, you might not like it.

To me it sounds like you are simply jealous of people with money and is very snobby about anyone who is not a Brighton hippy.

Peppermintytea · 18/05/2024 15:56

The Brighton I used to know and love (and live in) died at least 20 years ago.

It's now a horrible mish mash of performative woke-ism, terrible schools, drug users, homeless people and high earners trying to buy their way into the 'cool' lifestyle they believe it offers.

Greengablesfables · 18/05/2024 15:57

I love Brighton. I love London too. London is definitely friendlier, where we lived anyway. Brighton does seem rather parochial , slightly bitter. Greens messed it up. Labour don’t seem to be much better. But hopefully Brighton will start shining again.

TheFraud · 18/05/2024 16:01

Places change. Populations move.

The gritty area of London I grew up in - which was admittedly a bit of a shithole, but had great community spirit - is now extremely expensive and full of young professionals working in finance and tech and who are not from London.

I worry about the lack of social housing and the lack of affordable housing full stop for a lot of young people who aren’t in well paid jobs. The vibe less so.

StealthIguana · 18/05/2024 16:03

I don't really have an opinion either way, I suppose I would be annoyed if I was priced out of my area but it hasn't happened here.
Where I used to live, very far from where we are now, there was an influx of Londoners after lockdown. Mainly due to so many moving to WFH models but still earning the London wages so being able to outbid most people in the area. The local papers were, not long after, full of stories from people who recently moved complaining that the rural life wasn't what they imagined, there were was nothing to do and they felt like outsiders... Now that is silly for anyone to do, I don't know why on earth someone would move from a huge city to a rural community, expecting life to be more or less as it was!

Choochoo21 · 18/05/2024 16:03

So it’s ok for you to move to another area but not if you’re originally from London??

FWIW I live in Cornwall and always hear about bloody Londoners coming down here with all their money etc.
But it’s BS.

We absolutely have a problem with rich people buying second homes down here and that is something I wish would be sorted out.

But I would never generalise an entire city because of it.
Plenty of Londoners move down here and make the area a better place.

If I could afford it, I would move to London in a heartbeat.

No one should feel the need to stay in the same little village they were raised in, for fear that the locals will tar them all with the same brush.

Whats ironic is that when I go to London it’s full of non-Londoners.

She loves her cottage but realises that together with all the other DFLs she is making it unaffordable for locals.

Some people I used to know bought a house in Deal when they inherited from a parent. They already had a house in the London suburbs. They would go down for weekends, sometimes for a week or two, the rest of the time it stood empty.

At least the DFLs who move into the town I live in actually have the decency to live here full time. I moved here from London myself, 33 years ago, and no-one griped about it then. I'd say it only became a thing some time in the noughties.

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 18/05/2024 16:09

Countrylife2002 · 18/05/2024 12:48

Maybe it’s Londoners who themselves have been pushed out due to rising costs (like me)?

That's a bloody good point. How many people London born and bred (apart from those lucky enough to have been able to buy a council house at a discounted price two or three decades ago) can still afford to live there now? It's full of people who, not only are they not from London, but they are not even from this country. If Londoners have arrived where you are it's probably because they've been pushed out of their own area.

GingerPirate · 18/05/2024 16:15

Ukrainians have decimated Prague, apparently.
I wanted to go back where I was born, but decided to remain "stuck" with husband in the UK.
Oh well ....
So many things we don't ask for, eh?
