There are so many benefits bashing threads on here I’m really starting to wonder. Do the majority of people posting on mumsnet lean heavily to the right?

I do however think the "freedom of speech" policy and reputation of FWR has attracted some very right wing posters and posters with political views that are outside the mainstream

What might these view be? I have never seen this on MN.

Really? The "Emma Bunton" thread is a good place to start. Women calling other women "child abusers" on the basis of a photo of said child's birthday posted on line.

I have been here years and this move to accuse other women of child abuse in that way is definitely new (and imo not really in the spirit).

Which political parties are left wing and which are right wing? It's all jumbled up and such a bloody mess. Most of us are now politically homeless. Women have been let down by all parties.

The Conservatives have been in power for 14 years and Labour now have some very female friendly policies

I think the lib dems do too. It's not really fair to tar them all with the same brush just because the Conservatives have been dismal.

Making the Law Work for Women – My Labour Conference Speech 2023 - Emily Thornberry

Friends, it’s been a year, but I’ve got to say, it feels like nothing’s changed. Matt Hancock’s still making a prat of himself. Liz Truss is still having breaks from reality in public. Suella’s still on manoeuvres against Rishi. Rishi’s still too frigh...

@AdamRyan I'm not tarring them all indiscriminately. They've all been equally shockingly bad. Letting women down and quite frankly gaslighting us. It's all too little too late and I can't trust any of them.

Gosh no way.. l have always thought of it more to the left.
( I'm in the middle but vote Tory)

Somebody on the previous page claims the Tory party are left wing - which I suppose explains why nobody is admitting being right wing themselves.

If being to the right of Suella Braverman makes somebody moderate left-of-centre, I do wonder whether even Hitler would clear the bar for a right winger?

I think so many people are unable to see things in anything other than black and white. There are no shades of grey for them when, in reality, life is very rarely black and white. There is also a growing inability to debate and to listen to other people's opinions without name calling if those opinions don't match up to to the ones held by the person calling them out.. If someone has a different opinion to me I want to know why they think that, not just dismiss them out of hand.

I would probably think of myself as centre left but I think that the obsession with categorising people is causing so much division. Why does everyone have to be in a particular box? Everyone is different and I think social media is very much to blame for a lot of this. People feel they have to pick a side and if you deviate in any way fro the accepted views of your "side" you are a bad person.

The world would be so much better if people actually listened. You only have to read some of the threads on here to see that.

Absolutely.

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 17/05/2024 18:55

What I find odd is the right’s tendency to always play the victim. Like if posters correctly question the current lot’s policies and past record, people are literally ‘Tory bashing’.
And it was hilarious to see figures like BJ, JRM and Nigel Farage painting themselves as anti establishment figures whilst being in bed with disaster capitalist investors. The liberal elites were portrayed as the enemies of the people (like the Judiciary as well) and being a liberal is bandied around as an insult….completely topsy turvy

I quite agree.

Also, Adam hero worships Starmer so you won't get much sense or balance there.

Why should one have to 'admit' to being right wing like it is something to be ashamed of?
And why the fuck must you drag Hitler in to this? I guess it was just a matter of time. 🙄

Our current Tories are left wing, as they do left wing things.
Hitler was a socialist and didn't like the Js; therefore left wing.

Tbh the whole left-right wing paradigm is pretty redundant as a marker nowadays. We need a new one.

I don’t think it is something to be ashamed of, but people tying themselves in knots to claim the Tories are lefties and they themselves are just moderate centrists seem to have a problem accepting they are right wing. I don’t know why 🤷‍♀️

I mentioned Hitler as somebody who nobody could dispute was right wing, but lo and behold somebody else just has.

Alexandra2001 · 17/05/2024 19:24

I hope you re joking..... Hitler a socialist?????

Anyway, i find MN to be more centre left, than right wing, much like society.

Should be remembered that the Tories, since 2010 have never got more than 44% of the electorate who have voted.

Even in 2019, more people voted for left/centre left/pro EU parties than for the Tories.

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 17/05/2024 19:32

The thing is that slowly areas that have traditionally voted for the Conservatives are being hit by Tory negligence. Like the emergence of cryptosporidium in Devon and business owners losing their livelihood as people cancel holidays. The farmers being hit by Brexit. Fishing industry likewise. All this was predicted by anti leave commentators (said lefty liberal elites) and called project fear by the Tories. Like chickens coming home to roost turkeys voted for Christmas lol.

See it was this snotty, derisory tone from the Left that pissed people off so much that some voted for Brexit in the first place. People being dismissed as thick and incapable of understanding what they were voting for, talked down to.
Then came the shock result and the blaming thicko narrative again from commentators like Owen Jones who then said that they would deserve all that they got - rather like your post sadly.
There's no 'lol' in this for me.

Unnecessary and rude. I have a lot of respect for him and his track record and he's head and shoulders above Sunak. That's not "hero worshipping". It's just my opinion.

This.

Separately, I think different people interpret Right and Left differently (perhaps that's always been a thing or maybe it's a more recent one), and what's considered Left or Right is dependant on how each individual defines Left and Right.

But people who voted for Brexit do deserve all they got. Enough people were telling them what would happen. And if you only voted leave to piss off the left then it does make you look a bit dim tbh.

I was responding to the question you asked me about FWR. Which if you read my post wasn't about "right wing" as such.

I'd say accusing all and sundry of being child abusers on the basis of nothing is more alt right than right per sec.

AdamRyan · 17/05/2024 19:58

This thing about Hitler being left wing has cropped up a few times now and is basically the ultimate DARVO
