office wear

I work in an office and the majority of the peole wear casual and by that I mean jeans and t shirts and trainers. I always dress smart for work. Some who have tatoos wear short sleeves and show huge tattoos down each arm. I do not think that is appropriate for the office. I really wish i worked for a company who has a strict dress code wehre the women have to wear smart trousers and jackets and dresses and skirts and the men have to wear shirts and trousers and maybe a suit. I could not go to work looking sloppy even if there is no dress code

I’m a lecturer - my main subject area is digital marketing, and my students wouldn’t expect to be taught by a person in a suit, even though I am “customer facing”. Today I wore wide legged jeans, Breton top, and navy/white Samba trainers with red lipstick and chunky gold jewellery. My top is long sleeved but lurking under it are - shock - tattoos. If I taught law I’d dress more business-y, but even that team is more relaxed post-Covid.

Being told you look nice is not the same as your definition of smart 🤣

And for a different PP - no one is being unkind except OP with her judgement of tattoos

TheHorneSection · 17/05/2024 18:23

You'd love me then. Blazer, dress, heels... and several visible lower arm tattoos.

UsherPusher · 17/05/2024 18:24

Because of our role, FOH in a theatre, we have a certain dress code expectation whilst "on duty"

These relaxed post Covid to allow tattoos to be visible because so many of the people attracted to the position have them (younger and artistic types). We get customers talking to us about out tattoos as they love them.

If we are in for any other reason such as training then we are all in whatever casual is our style so jeans, dresses, shorts and vests in summer etc

Managers have suits/blazers hanging in their office so they can change from casual to their "customer face" if doing desk based work before a show

I do not think blazers look dated. I think they are very smart and in this video Kate is described as looking chic and I agree

The media are biased towards the royals so they'd say this even if she looked shite. She looks lovely, but this style is not for me, I find it dull. Imagine! We all like different things.

Bet she wouldn’t be seen dead in legging, though!

I also own a black velvet dress which I wore to a funeral recently again, with pearls

Did you clutch them?

bloodyplumbing · 17/05/2024 18:32

Flute56 · 17/05/2024 17:31

I have also been somewhere and worn a formal tailored dress with long sleeves and tights and heels and i teamed it with a string of pearls and someone said I loe your outfit

Do you always just talk about yourself?

@Flute56
The thing is most 40 year old women do not dress like this.
Kate dresses 'old' and 'stately' as that is her 'job.'

I work in strategy - I don't have to dress in a blazer. When I am in the office, I do tend to wear dresses and trainers / boots with a biker jacket which I feel comfortable in.

Pipsquiggle · 17/05/2024 18:39

Sorry forgot to say I am also a woman in my 40s

lol. Okay Camilla.

I agree also sick of women wearing maxi floral or garish print dresses to the office with trainers. Feel like I’m at a bloody school summer fete not the office. Those dresses are like tents!

I like dressing different at work to home. I am very casual outside of work. The formality of work clothes gets me in the right headspace.

Good for you!

Do you understand that others don't need those props to get into the right headspace at work?

<whispers> she’s gone to work in jeans, OP.

SemperIdem · 16/05/2024 01:41

The default for office wear where I work is - blazer, wide leg trousers, Veja or Samba trainers.

There’s the odd Gen Z outlier who will turn in wearing clothes I wouldn’t be seen outside the house in, but broadly speaking there’s an expectation that casual also means looking put together.

Edited

Well, THIS year it is the default. In a year or so, with a bit of luck, hideous wide leg cropped trousers and trainers worn with bloody well everything will have gone the way of (insert ghastly fashion trend here). Or the casual trend will have veered in the other direction. Fashion is a moving target--that said, some styles are always elegant.

MinistryOfTragic · 17/05/2024 18:57

If that's all you have to worry about at work then you're not doing too badly. I really couldn't get worked up about what people wear, I'm more bothered by someone with such a judge attitude to their colleagues to be honest.

So it's only women's clothing you have an issue with? I couldn't give less of a shit if you're fed up with looking at my dresses!!

EmpressaurusOfCats · 17/05/2024 19:15

I work in digital marketing - nobody in my office judges anyone by their clothes as long as you’re clean and tidy. They do judge them for not checking grammar, spelling and punctuation when sending messages.

PotatoPudding · 17/05/2024 19:18

OP, how do you feel about people who wear the same outfit all week? (Smart or casual)

Pretty much, the men in my office mainly wear suits which are inoffensive. I just think those dresses look strange in an office setting. They are too casual.

yes of course, just sharing my thoughts, I think they look scruffy. They look nice outside of work but are a strange office wear choice.

bloodyplumbing · 17/05/2024 19:27

@DrearyTeaTowel that's your issue, stop projecting your "women" should dress in a certain way.

It's old fashioned
It's demeaning

And frankly I'm embarrassed for you!

And if you're "fed up" with looking at how women in your office dress, I suggest you either get a life or get another job that offers uniform.

OPs other threads are about people calling her "odd", not surprising, I think you're probably the same category.

That's your problem though, not theirs.
