office wear

Flute56 · 15/05/2024 22:41

I work in an office and the majority of the peole wear casual and by that I mean jeans and t shirts and trainers. I always dress smart for work. Some who have tatoos wear short sleeves and show huge tattoos down each arm. I do not think that is appropriate for the office. I really wish i worked for a company who has a strict dress code wehre the women have to wear smart trousers and jackets and dresses and skirts and the men have to wear shirts and trousers and maybe a suit. I could not go to work looking sloppy even if there is no dress code

I always wear smart stuff for work. I never wear jeans or trainers. I do wear flat shoes and sometimes wear shoes with a slight heel. I wear trouser suits with a smart blouse. I have very occasionally worn leggings but with a smart pair of flat shoes and a smart sweater. But mainly I wear a smart skirt or dress with tights.. In the summer when its too hot for tights I dont bother and have a smart pair of sandals. My colleague who has tatoos over both arms and shows them off with a sleeveless dress also has 4 inch false nails. When I first started work my mum saw me going to work and said why are you wearing trousers to the office and I said because I can and they are smart trousers. She then said to me women do not wear trousers to the office and neither should you. I took no notice and wore them aagain. That said, I have not been influenced by my mother, I am just one of these people who like all things smart.

Call me a snob if you like but thats how I am. I take a pride in my appearance.

Female members of the Royal Family look smart. You would never see the Princess of Wales with tatoos showing and she usually wears heels and everything she wears is teamed with a smart blazer. She looks gorgeous and her outfits are a sell out in shops

Why do you only wear flat shoes or shoes with a slight heel when a 4 inch stiletto is generally considered much smarter. Flats look awful with business attire.

cherish123 · 17/05/2024 12:16

I always wear smart clothing to work because it makes me feel happy. I also like my work attire to contrast with what I wear at home. I never wear skirts at home. I am v casual at home because of the activities I do.

CleanShirt · 17/05/2024 12:18

@Flute56 Bully for you. Why do you think everyone should be the same as you? You're not automatically right.

reluctantbrit · 17/05/2024 12:30

DD's primary school head wore shorts from March - November, normally paired with a short sleeve shirt. He was from Australia, no idea if that makes a difference.

Most teachers wore more casual, jeans with shirts, comfortable clothes, especially the teachers for the younger years. I still have the utmost respect for anyone teaching 4-11 year olds.

In secondary I expect the staff to wear business smart, after all if they insist the children wear uncomfortable uniform, they can suffer as well.

People in public view - they represent the state, council, country and you would expect them to dress accordingly when they are on camera in their official role. If they wear shorts and tank tops in the office I don't care.

Tattoos - one of my previous colleagues has the most beautiful full sleeve on one arm. Far too georgous to be hidden under a shirt.

SamW98 · 17/05/2024 12:33

She then said to me women do not wear trousers to the office and neither should you.

Dear God 1955 called they want their outdated sexist attitude back.

Marblessolveeverything · 17/05/2024 12:46

I don't know too many people in real life who would look to your royal family for fashion advice! They have a very unique role and dress according to rules set down somewhere by some man probably a very long time ago.

My late mother taught me never judge people by appearance.

I really would question why judge others choices? For a person who is conscious of appearances, nothing looks worse than a judgemental person 🤷‍♀️

Pipsquiggle · 17/05/2024 12:49

@Flute56
Until you own / run your own company, you can't dictate what your colleagues wear.
Many companies have adopted a more casual work attire because they have had feedback from their staff that they feel more comfortable in more casual clothes and feel more authentic, which in turn (more often than not) increases morale, a more diverse culture; which in turn leads to better productivity.

If my company started to reverse their dress code, I think I would start to look for a new job.

It's obvious that this really riles you, yet you expect society to change to what you think rather than acknowledge work practices have changed. You could, right now, apply for a job in a company where their values align with yours. It's completely up to you.

Good question. My DH dresses very casually but there’s a £6000 watch on his wrist.

You are Jacob Rees-Mogg and I claim my £5!

You’re not a snob OP but you’re very unrealistic judgemental and narrow minded and despite most industries having proved how success casual attire is in the office, you’re determined that you’re right and the entire corporate world is wrong.

Taking pride in your appearance doesn’t equal presenting yourself like an extra from Wall Street.

I work in an industry (finance) that used to have notoriously strict dress code standards 30 years ago but even the stuffiest old school investment houses have moved with the times.

Even 20 years ago, my director had a suit hanging up in his office he changed into when clients were in and wore jeans the rest of the time.

LakieLady · 17/05/2024 13:14

Flute56 · 16/05/2024 19:21

If you go to your local Sainsburys and see the managers they are always wearing a suit

Maybe get a job in Sainsburys, then. It seems their dress code is much more to your liking.

FlissyPaps · 17/05/2024 13:15

Yeah, you are coming off as a massive patronising snob.

Get a fucking grip, there are people dying in war zones and you’re banging on about people looking sloppy for having tattoos and wearing jeans to the office. Fucking insufferable.

PineappleBanana · 17/05/2024 13:25

I had a boss like the OP.

I dressed professionally but she told me one day that my (appropriately covered) boobs were “distracting from my capabilities”. (C-suite/my team had nothing but good things to say about me in my 360s.) I told her the only thing they get in the way of is me seeing my feet and asked her what she expected me to do given I they weren’t the sort that I could take off and leave at home.

I dyed my hair bright pink the following week.

She was very “cat’s bum mouth” from that point.

"I took no notice and wore them again"
So, your mum also had views about how other people should dress but you had your own opinion?
Maybe the rest of us do too.

"I am just one of those people who likes all things smart."
And I am not.

Isn't it funny how we're all different?

LakieLady · 17/05/2024 13:35

I work in the 3rd sector. I don't think we have a dress code of any sort, although I recall an email coming round several years ago saying that shorts were allowed, but not if they were sports shorts, board shorts or beachwear.

I can't recall the last time I saw a man wearing a tie at work (although I concede I don't spend a lot of time in the office). They mostly wear shirts or polo shirts, with chinos, jeans, sometimes more formal trousers. Women wear pretty much whatever they like.

The only time I put "workwear" on is when I'm representing at tribunals, then it's a black trouser suit and a "proper" blouse. I can't quite bring myself to go before a judge in jeans and a t-shirt.

I feel that people are being deliberately unkind to the OP, whose style of writing suggests to me that they may have some additional needs. Her views are a bit outdated, but not offensive and don't deserve the nastiness she is getting here.

I just wrote a dress code for my workplace that specified no jeans, hoodies or open-toed shoes. Some of you would spontaneously combust working with me!
