Nearly cried at the change in weather

I felt so much better at the end of last week with the sunshine and even this morning was happy hanging the washing out . Until the rain set in again and I checked the long term forecast and it's to stay showery and under .20 degrees until mid June now. Can't help it. Just feel really depressed. I was so happy pottering in the garden and getting a bit of sun. Anyone else struggling.

Surely you can just say no to all the parties, BBQS, weddings and festivals and stay at home with the curtains closed? Nobody forces you out to socialise.

I find Christmas and the lead up to it far more exhausting in a social way it’s all concentrated in December. Plus loads of illnesses flying around.

Of course.

It was a response to the "Christmas is worse" etc posts.

It's life.

It's not a competition.

But some MNetters and people in general can't accept that different people experience different things differently.

And nobody is wrong or right.

But these threads bring out posters who seem to think that someone experiencing things differently to them, must be trolling, or lying, or 'weird'.

So set up straw man fallacies.

Someone should be able to not enjoy heat and the social expectations of summer without Someone saying "well Christmas is harder for me".

Just let people not enjoy hot weather if they choose. There are numerous threads every Christmas and the lead up, and the aftermath on MN for people who don't enjoy it.

It was so lovely the last few days. So nice to send my two eldest into nursery not in their winter coats. Nice to take them to the playground at the weekend without stuffing them into puddle suits and wellies. Nice to be able to get my baby out of the pram, but a blanket down under a tree in the shade and lie him down so he could kick his legs about a bit. I’m so fucking sick of the cold and rain.

Agree. I honestly don’t understand what people can ‘like’ about it even though I get people enjoy different things. What is there to actually enjoy? Being wet? Is that a pleasant sensation? Damp? Condensation in the windows? Not being able to hang out washing? Lack of vitamin D? What is even remotely enjoyable about it?

It’s spring, what do you expect. I find it weird anyone lives their lives by the weather, or lets it affect their mood.

This.

People with genuine SAD I don't include but most people who claim to have it, don't.

I'm always a bit bewildered by people who live in the UK finding the climate surprising or problematic.

I'm in my 40s. We sometimes have snow in March and also, some unseasonably hot days where you could get sun burn.

We often have lovely warm Spring as in days in April like the 2020 covid lockdown year. This year has been wetter.

We often have nice sunny spring/early summer which changes to very rainy once the schools end for summer.

Some summers are scorching for a few days or weeks.

Most Autumns are mild and damp

Most winters are mild and damp, we had a couple of winters almost over 10 years ago with a lot of snow for most if not all of England.

It's pretty much always been this way. Mostly wet and mild. That's our climate.

But I think like the clocks going forward or back where people express surprise every single year about how dark or light it is at X time of the day, people forget that's just how it is and always has been.

Oh I felt so ill with the heat!

Where were you? Morocco? Grin
Cos it certainly wasn't hot enough where I am in the U.K. to make anyone ill.
I took one layer off. It was nice.

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 14/05/2024 19:19

Probably the twinkly lights, snuggled under blankets drinking hot chocolate brigade who love the dark wet cold weather

They can all get tae. We've had fucking months of relentless rain and dark. We NEED some sun!

Not just for mood, for farmers to be able to grow our food! It's been a disastrous spring here for the farmers.

At least you’re not under an evacuation alert due to a wildfire.

By this stage I think I'd take my chances. At least I'll die warm.

I absolutely love, love, love to see a blue sky. It doesn't have to be that warm particularly (though it's great if it is!), it's just the blue sky that lifts my spirits. The last few months have been so constantly cloudy, it feels claustrophobic to me.

Looking at the long-term forecast on the Met Office site, it actually doesn't look that bad to me. As PP have said though, it's really hard to predict more than a few days in advance, so I'm hoping we get lots of lovely weather again soon!

I live in the north, and honestly, the number of people in my town who moan 'It's too 'ot for me!' if the temperature goes higher than about 18 is absolutely unbelievable. Hard to believe that anyone prefers lashing rain, endless cloud and constantly feeling cold, but apparently they do. 😐

It’s strange isn’t it?!

these people often talk about being “COSY” too a lot

LuckySantangelo35 · 14/05/2024 19:55

“Probably the twinkly lights, snuggled under blankets drinking hot chocolate brigade who love the dark wet cold weather”

surely though no one would take that over sitting in a nice beer garden hearing the birds tweeting and wearing sunglasses and nice summer clothes enjoying a chilled glass of wine with pals or whatever would they?! Surely not?!

greengreyblue · 14/05/2024 19:57

I prefer the nicer days but accept that in this climate it is variable.

greengreyblue · 14/05/2024 06:56

Also think some of you have forgotten that you live in the U.K. We have never had great spring/summers. This is standard. Last week was out of the norm for May. It’s still spring.

It's really not.

An older family member's birthday is mid May and every year for years we have been able to have a nice lunch or afternoon tea in their garden, enjoying some warmth.

Not this year, far too cold and grey! She was so disappointed and said it's the first time in many years that the weather has been rubbish on her birthday.

My hayfever and rosacea are both grateful for a bit of a break from the sun, heat and dryness.

a break from

What the fuck? A break from what sun??

The sun was here for 2/3 days. Barely enough time to find the sunscreen before back to grey skies again.

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 14/05/2024 20:22

@MarriedMama23 woah, hold on, she never said a thing about anyone with disabilities.

Just a light comment about a particular well known trope/stereotype on Mumsnet.

To be fair, I like that....in winter not all bloody year round! I like seasons, this never-ending grey, wet, windy weather is so depressing 😢

You never know though, it can suddenly change.

Appropriate username then! Smile

That would be because the 21st of June is actually the first day of summer 😅 It's still spring up until that point. Summer then runs until the 21st of September.

Oh I know that but the longest day is obviously the mid point in our heads!

The nights start drawing in 1 week after that. It’s not the start of anything.

FlyTime · 14/05/2024 21:43

I agree.

I have bad depression and those 3 sunny days I sat in the garden alot smiling to myself. Even just going to a garden centre in the sun made it feel like a holiday adventure.

No it wasn’t very hot and a bit of a lovely respite to 6 months of rain and grey. The flooding round here has been crazy.

I find it bizarre that people can’t cope with a slight temperature increase and sunny weather for a few days. It was about 22/23 degrees!

Come back when you have a condition that means you can’t regulate your temperature properly. It literally drains the life out of me.

Housebuyingfamily · 14/05/2024 21:49

In my experience, people who say they “absolutely hate” sunny weather are usually just overweight, have poor social lives, or both. The good weather just accentuates these points, which they don’t like.

Obviously if you have a medical condition that comment wouldn't be aimed at you.

People complaining about the “heat” must be trolling 😁😁😁

No I think they’re genuine. Obesity and co-morbidity is increasing greatly. A lot of people are not very healthy so whilst 23C won’t trouble a healthy person, an unhealthy person would probably struggle. Hence the ‘I’m dreading it getting over 20C posts’.

Exactly. Maybe I should type out ‘apart from those who have rare medical conditions’

I’m unhealthy. Not because of obesity, but because I have an illness. Saying it’s only obese people who complain is a bit narrow minded.
