Is it on finance? Just wondering how many people actually buy then outright? They are my dream car and although I could finance a monthly payment I could never buy one outright! How much do you have to earn for that?! I’m on 89k for context

well it’s safe to say I’ve been largely put off my dream car after reading all this!!! 😅

Ah, our work here is done 😊

Gems2k · 14/05/2024 08:03

To all the people hating on RR. I bet if someone said they’d buy one for you, you would take it. I’ve owned a top of the range Kia and it was a very nice, solid car. Nowhere near a comparison to my top of the range, RR Autobiography (bought second hand). So many people hate RR because of the green eyed monster, seem more than happy for people to truck around in people carriers or a similarly built car as long as it didn’t come from JLR. My family need bigger cars as my husband is 6ft4 and doesn’t fit in the small cars safely and we have 2 children who need to have somewhere to put their legs in the back seat. SUV is a must and our SUV of choice is a RR.

Such a shame that bitter jealous people have swayed your decision.

orangeleopard · 14/05/2024 08:21

People get ranges for the status, rather than them being decent cars. Every person I have known who ‘own’ one are complete dicks and far up their own arses. This one couple I know have matching range rovers (one white, one black) and instead of saying ‘the car’, they say ‘the range’. I shouldn’t judge, but anyone I see driving them, I just see them as people who care about image and status and thinking they’re better than everyone else.

Of course if someone was going to give me a free car, I'd take it. But then I'd instantly sell it for something that I'd actually want to drive.

I really don't think people are jealous. More sheer incomprehension that something so unattractive, impractical, unreliable and dangerous to other road users is so attractive to a minority.

Ah OP, don't be put off by all these green eyed monsters. Envy is one of the seven deadly sins...get one and piss them off even more 😁

Gems2k · 14/05/2024 08:33

The car isn’t Dangerous the driver is. If you get hit by a van, or a BMW X5 etc it’s likely to cause as much damage as getting hit by a Range Rover. I know someone who killed someone by accident in a road collision and she was driving a Nissan micra!!! Cars don’t kill people sh*t drivers do!

Gems2k · 14/05/2024 08:37

My husband and I must be awful people as we have matching range rovers, both red with matching number plates. We love them. Haters gonna hate, but how about in such a god awful world we stop judging other people and smile at the small things may make that person happy. I don’t buy designer clothing because I don’t care what clothes I wear but I also don’t buy the cheap crap that’s been made by kids in china!! I wonder how many people hating on range rovers purchase clothes from Shein or the other cheap knock off companies with very questionable human rights violations. 🤔

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 14/05/2024 08:48

I don't find them that attractive, tbh.

TizerorFizz · 14/05/2024 08:58

@Bjorkdidit Impractical? How can that describe a RR? They can go more or less anywhere in comfort with space, good vision and on and off road capability. I'm not keen on the rear styling on the latest model but impractical it isn't.

I've had either. RR or jLR 4x4 since 1992. Not going to change my mind. Dh and me love our Porsche Macan and I'm looking forward to getting the Evoque hybrid. I don't really need a big RR and the running costs of the hybrid Evoque look reasonable.

I'm not keen on promoting Asian cars over JLR. Plus the reliability surveys are distributed owners. Merc doesn't do well either. Who takes any notice of these?

like it runs on double cream

Well as long as you’re comfy and feeling good about yourself your journey from A to B that’s the main thing.

Edited

Yes, I thoroughly enjoy driving it, it's a pleasure. Thank you.

AlpineMuesli · 14/05/2024 09:19

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 14/05/2024 08:48

I don't find them that attractive, tbh.

They’re fine for actual farmers and look like they belong on a farm track, not lumbering around narrow British streets like a sumo in tanning booth.

I don’t know when people started wanting to cosplay farmers but the marketing must have worked.
What next though, everyone wanting a John Deere? 😄

Arraminta · 14/05/2024 09:28

I agree that the very latest shape isn't as attractive, it looks very boxy from the back. I used to drive a RR Sport and that was my favourite shape plus it had the lovely automatic running boards which meant my Mum could easily get in and out. It's the one thing I dislike about my Vogue, no running boards even though it's slightly taller than the Sport?

OneTC · 14/05/2024 09:28

Polishedshoesalways · 14/05/2024 03:57

I agree same here. I couldn’t care less what car people drive but in the country 4x4 is a must in the winter where we are, and most have access to one.
I find the acidity of this thread rather amusing. Why would anyone care about what car other people choose to get from A to B.

Because they're between A and B?

CoffeeCantata · 14/05/2024 09:33

OP, you admit that your self-esteem is tied up with having a posh car!

Mine is emphatically tied up with NOT having a posh car. I love my old banger and I have to say, it's a great filter when I meet people - and fascinating to see how you get judged....sometimes positively, sometimes not!

I do judge drivers of suburban tanks, though, and what you've said sort of confirms my thoughts...that it's all about compensating for some self-esteem issue.

blue345 · 14/05/2024 09:35

I shouldn’t judge, but anyone I see driving them, I just see them as people who care about image and status and thinking they’re better than everyone else.

Ouch. I bought mine because I think they're beautiful cars and I'd wanted one for ages. Their reputation as a wanker magnet put me off (and if it gives me credit for not being about the status, it replaced an old Volvo).

People have seen my car and stopped me in the street to ask if RR unreliability is a real thing and we're still going through it half an hour later. If I've saved one person from a purchase they'll regret, my job is done.

Kudos to the Citroen with the mini fridge (add in the wading sensor and what more could you ever need?!)

Arraminta · 14/05/2024 09:40

I must admit I've never thought much about the self esteem trope? Now that I have, it really doesn't apply to me. I just really like my RR and it's a pleasure to drive, that's all.

OneTC · 14/05/2024 09:42

And yeah in the hands of a decent driver they can go anywhere. But the closest most get to off roading is mounting a kerb in Wimbledon

IItisymoi · 14/05/2024 10:03

I now have 2 Freelanders (toys compared to my old '90') One is my 'long trip' car and for when I need to tow my trailer. The second I bought for spares for €500 needing it's clutch replaced. and it is already an 'investment' since the tyres were good and the ridiculously stupid rear window mechanism worked so I could rob that to make my 'running' car work. The engines are 2 Litre diesels and are are more economical than a Renault Espace and overall it is around the same size as an Espace. I MUCH prefer the sight lines of the '90' which I had to let go because I didn't have enough money or time to get it MOT'd and make a few alterations to meet EU regulations (lights etc) AND English thieves had ripped the dashboard out trying to steal it before I moved to France. In England with the '90' I would take my daughter to school then go to the builders merchants on the way home to collect a load of timber (thrown on the roof) or 10 bags of cement.

GasPanic · 14/05/2024 10:37

Not great cars IMO.

Until at least recently very easy to steal, and therefore some astronomical insurance issues.

Expensive to run and repair. They do not have a great reputation for reliability.

The depreciation on them recently has been horrible. Buying new ones is literally like setting fire to £5 notes.

That is without all the usual arguments regarding SUVs, poor pedestrian safety hauling around massive amounts of extra metal that is not required and horrible fuel consumption that is bad for the environment.

I only hope that for the people driving them they provide one hell of a driving experience.

I certainly would take it, and then sell it on immediately and keep the cash. They are inferior in every way to their German equivalents, and SUVs are inferior in every way to a nice sporty estate (unless you are actually offroading, which the vast majority never do).

Almost as bad as a thread about personalised number plates.

@GasPanic "I only hope that for the people driving them they provide one hell of a driving experience."

They really don't - too much weight and too high a centre of gravity. So, sure if you like wallowing about in a sofa then they're fine, but don't think you're going to be zipping round corners like you're on rails, especially with the crappy ditchfinder tyres that they often come with secondhand (as that's all the previous owner could afford).
