To be angry so many girls schools are going Co-Ed?

Yet again it’s been proven girls do better in single sex schools (I have a son as well as a daughter so please don’t think I’m ’hating on boys’).

https://amp.theguardian.com/education/article/2024/may/12/girls-do-better-in-exams-at-all-girls-schools-than-mixed-research-finds

In my hometown growing up there were 4 girls schools. 1 grammar, 1 private, and 2 regular secondaries, meaning pretty much all parents regardless of background had access to single sex education for their daughters if they wanted it.

2 have announced their plans to go Co-Ed, with 1 already having done so, leaving just 1 (the grammar, so working class girls will be inherently disadvantaged). This seems to be a pattern across the country.

AIBU to be angry this is happening? Can’t girls have anything to themselves?

Well of course it is. What do you think we’ve been discussing this whole time? Confused

I know what you mean but I think she means in the sense of boys being so bad that girls have to be kept away from them. And kept away completely in some kind of segregated life in which men do not feature at all.

That’s not really the point of single sex education.

Thanks for agreeing with me - my comment was actually in response to someone disagreeing that was what was happening on this thread.😉

Wow! Why has this thread degenerated so much?

In my own experience, I think girls are, on average, happier and more successful (this bit is backed by research) in a girls’ school, but there are exceptions. Some hate it and are desperate to go to a mixed school. This accelerates in the 6th form. I often wondered whether the girls who left for mixed after Year 11 regretted it.

I do think that girls are more likely to choose STEM subjects in single sex schools as well.

But it is horses for courses. There is not one perfect school, just the same as adult work places. I think it is important, though, that the choice remains.

There is no need to call people dumb because they challenge you. Poor debating.

Using phrases such as “boys”, “they” and “the boys” does suggest that they are all being lumped together, otherwise the word “some” should have been used.

All the posters who require NAMALT flags, Nethuns is that way ➡️

Why have you have resorted to insulting people? Is it because you don't have anywhere else to take this?

@Newbutoldfather some posters have been resorting to quite nasty insults, sadly.

Wow! Why has this thread degenerated so much?

Because as mentioned before, if you talk about certain women’s issues online - female spaces, female education, female pay, treatment of women etc - someone will turn up and try to shout down the discussion talking about men.

Even on MN.

Challenge 🤣

Genuinely, you and others need to stop being simplistic and defeatist on this thread. Yes, many boys behave dreadfully. I will never excuse it.

But if you try and raise your sons well, you could just possibly start to change things. And find ways to improve things for girls that don’t just involve segregation.

Keeping boys separate does not address the core issue of poor male behaviour.

That's not what's happening at all, no matter how many times you try to suggest it is.

FaeryRing · 14/05/2024 19:37

Private you mean! Grammars segregate based on academic ability.

Exactly. And they were a place where only intelligence mattered. Rich or poor. But then Labour started the process of closing them. Because they don’t like raising people up.

I would challenge you to write a research paper on any of these topics without discussing the ways in which men contribute to the issue.

And discussing a topic is not ‘shouting down’. Were you thinking this would be a one-sided discussion? That sounds quite dull to me.

I went to an all-girls school and have a daughter. We discuss sexism at home as a family all the time. We challenge and debate and speak about the patriarchy. But we also see evidence of how boys can learn good behaviour by role-modelling and raising expectations. That’s all.

Agree with this. Life in general. And now we’ve got men invading our spaces (gender woo TWAW bull shit). Can women have nothing to ourselves?

That’s why posters thought you were a bloke. It’s normally blokes who keep trying to turn the discussion to men/boys.

Men invading women only spaces is a genuine concern. Start a(nother) thread about that if you want to discuss that particular topic though. This thread is about the schooling of children and how it can be best done to allow both girls and boys to thrive and grow.

I mean I hate to have to point out the obvious, but I think you'll find that the posters openly criticising boys were the ones mentioning them the most.
