To be angry so many girls schools are going Co-Ed?

FaeryRing · 12/05/2024 20:38

Yet again it’s been proven girls do better in single sex schools (I have a son as well as a daughter so please don’t think I’m ’hating on boys’).

https://amp.theguardian.com/education/article/2024/may/12/girls-do-better-in-exams-at-all-girls-schools-than-mixed-research-finds

In my hometown growing up there were 4 girls schools. 1 grammar, 1 private, and 2 regular secondaries, meaning pretty much all parents regardless of background had access to single sex education for their daughters if they wanted it.

2 have announced their plans to go Co-Ed, with 1 already having done so, leaving just 1 (the grammar, so working class girls will be inherently disadvantaged). This seems to be a pattern across the country.

AIBU to be angry this is happening? Can’t girls have anything to themselves?

I would take it over upskirting, being shown violent pornography and watching boys throwing chairs across the classroom.

I went to a co-ed, my kid is in a co-ed and I've worked in co-eds.

Never seen or been made aware any of those happening.

Sure.
You keep repeating that and not answering why you hate boys so much.
It's really echoey in here.

You: why do you hate boys sob
Me: I don’t, I just want girls to have the option of single sex schooling as boys can have a detrimental effect.
You: why do you hate boys so much sob
Me: I don’t, here are studies to back up what I’m saying alongside my own experience.
You: why do you hate boys sob you just want to be in an echo chamber
Me: I wouldn’t want to abolish Co-Ed, just for parents to be able to choose.
You: You hate boys sob why do you hate them

It’s numbing! Have a good day

I’d agree if there was no proven benefit and girls and boys were being kept apart just because. But there is a proven benefit and girls will lose it. Why should they?

You say 'proven benefit' but the latest study posted in this thread showed no significant difference.

Also, my point was that sometimes a balance is better - good grades and a well-rounded social aspect may be better for the transition into the work world than slightly better grades but being sheltered. Quite a few posters have already said that they struggled in interacting with men having not been around them until adulthood.

The majority of the studies show a benefit, as do the mental health studies. They’re not perfect, but they’re a good indicator that overall there is a benefit, and that’s been my
own experience (and others on here).

If you were to explain your hatred of boys then you wouldn't have to numb yourself though.
As already stated, by other posters and me, the studies aren't as reliable as you think.
Keep echoing though.

@pointythings multiple studies have all drawn the same conclusion. I’m angry that the girls welfare is being sacrificed for financial/strategic reasons, or because they’re supposed to have a ‘moderating’ effect on boys behaviour.

Some people regard private schools as the greedy face of capitalism. Presumably, you strategically decided to educate your dc in a paid for school and it's a little ironic to complain the school is making economic decisions. I mean this is the whole premise of private education? It's a business and you opted to let a business educate your dc.

Sunnnybunny72 · 13/05/2024 07:53

With a bright child a co-ed school is on balance, probably better. More representative of the outside world and the mix of people and behaviours they will encounter.
And it's generally not in the higher sets that boys are throwing chairs around.

I have 1 child at school (other too young) and it’s a Co ed state primary.

The study only found a very slight difference. I went to both as did one of my Dds. We slightly preferred the single sex but there are pros and cons and some will be happier at a mixed school.

No because they’re outdated, not popular and not financially viable. Private schools are businesses and are closing them for a reason. State need to be putting any spare cash in lot the horrendous inadequacies l, under funding and poor provision as regards SEN not chucking money away on a system that very few people want and isn’t that healthy.

This sort of data is inherently skewed though. There are less SS girls schools than CoEd schools -many of which will actually either be private schools or elite state schools (less of them, so harder to get in and thus can select the best pupils). It stands to reason that comparing data from private girls/elite girls schools with date from a whole range of CoEd schools is going to suggest the SS schools are better for the girls. This article clearly states that when like for like is actually compared then there isn't really a huge difference! Also, better academically doesn't mean better all round!
As for 'please don't think I am hating on boys', when you say something concrete to back that up we'll believe you.

The mental health studies do not and as I said previously results will be slightly better (10%)better as girls schools are by and large selective with little SEN.

Edited

They did adjust the data for the differences you mention and still found girls at single sex schools did slightly better. Nothing to get worked up over though.

Yes, I read it.
OP is using this link to promote how much better it is for girls to be at a SS school, but this article clearly states there is only a small difference when they compare like for like. The bigger differences might well be when like is not compared for like.

Oh yes, apparently it's other posters who are doing that though.
Apparently we all also don't care about girls because we also care about boys and actual facts.

HumourM3 · 13/05/2024 08:29

When you look at the crisis in SEN provision the gnashing of teeth over selective girls schools very few people actually want is quite distasteful.

FaeryRing · 13/05/2024 08:08

Just because there are both types doesn't mean everyone gets an option. Some who would have been happier in mixed will end up in single sex and visa versa. There's no real difference academically and noone can say which would suit an individual child.

She was referring to

”upskirting, being shown violent pornography and watching boys throwing chairs across the classroom.”

Yes porn is viewed by many teenage girls and boys but upskirting, violent porn and boys throwing chairs isn’t necessarily as common.
