Israel and Eurovision

1000 replies

Carly944 · 12/05/2024 12:16

I've seen all the protests that Israel shouldn't have been allowed to enter the Eurovision. I don't think politics should be part of eurovision

Has everyone forgotten that a lot of countries at this stage have invaded each other, and that a lot of countries have a bloody and violent past.

The United Kingdom invaded many countries and massacred and killed many many people in the past.

Germany have obviously started two world wars.

Spain have invaded countries and done a lot of brutality to people in the past.

Should none of these countries be allowed to enter eurovision then. If we are going to put politics into it, nearly every European country would be banned from eurovision.

Israel is far from the only country in the world that have invaded and massacred people. Its awful, but it has also been awful when other countries did it. And many of them have. So I'm not sure why there was just the call for Israel to be banned

No-on, but no-one is excusing the atrocities of October 7th. But to say this 'war' started on October 7th is just ridiculous. It started over 70 years ago, and has been relentless on the Palestinians.

https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2024/5/13/israel-killing-palestinians-in-cold-blood-in-the-west-bank

To be honest a war didn’t start on October 7th. Hamas didn’t go to war - they sneaked into a music festival, an easy target, and proceeded to rape, torture and murder a group of people who were just going about their lives. So it wasn’t a war - just a cowardly group of savages/terrorists who just felt like raping torturing and murdering randomly on that particular night. What did they think it would achieve? Did they honestly think their actions would make Israel or the rest of the world empathise with their 70 year ‘cause’? What they did that day was not to help the Palestinians, but just to satisfy their own needs to rape and torture. They’ve not helped the people they claim to represent at all.

I think the idea is that Israel is currently at war.

And - Russia were not allowed to compete on these grounds, so why not Israel.

Not that I have an opinion either way tbh.

Because Israel are murdering brown people.

There have been, and I'm neither willing nor able to look them up for you. So believe me or don't. That's entirely up to you.

No I don’t believe you.

I also think you purposefully twisted my post to make it seem like i was saying por-Palestinians were anti-Semitic rather than saying the Nazi comparisons to Israel were? I mean you MUST have done that on purpose because no one could have missed my point at all I made it very clear

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 19:47

HelenHen · 13/05/2024 17:52

There you go YaMuvva. Antisemitic accusation! Because I suggested, using evidence, that there was a concerted push for Israeli votes around the world.

Antisemitic!

Did you share the wrong post?!

That doesn’t prove your claim at all

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 19:48

HelenHen · 13/05/2024 17:54

I'm a bit fed up of the whole 'show me', 'prove it' crap, when this is simply a discussion and everyone else can say what they want. The one time I posted evidence, I get called antisemitic. What is this?

You are the one making quite outrageous claims - it’s perfectly fair to ask for proof.

”I don’t like being told to prove my lies” - says it all really

So just stop!

You can interpret my posts as you wish. You seem determined to be contrary so I won't waste time 'debating' you. I have made my position clear, as have you. No point raking it over the coals. We don't agree.

JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods · 13/05/2024 19:45

Other countries aren't currently murdering 1000's of women & children are they?

Boycotting south african goods helped end apartheid.

It's a valid point imo.

No it didn't.

The collapse of the Soviet Union caused the end of Apartheid.

Boycotts by a few westerners had nothing to do with it at all. For example when Barclays left South Africa, UBS arrived the very next day to yake its place. A new supplier will always take the abandoned market.

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 19:52

Sugarfish · 13/05/2024 17:56

I agree the Greek woman’s actions in the press conference were childish and uncalled for.

Personally I’d be pissed off if someone kept filming me and put it online when I asked them not to. And then the people in charge refused to do anything about it. Joost Klein had enough and lashed out, told a camera woman to fuck off or something similar and was disqualified for it. There is a video out there of someone in the Israeli team mocking him for not being on stage in the dress rehearsal, I can’t be bothered to find it now but it’s on Reddit and Twitter.

I can see why the artists didn’t want to be shown with Eden. When a video of Kaarija was posted a few days ago of him dancing with her, he received death threats and had to distance himself from it. Which is a shame because he was quite friendly with last years Israel entry. These are people entering a singing competition, a lot of them are inexperienced with the media and shouldn’t be put in a position where they get threatened online, it’s not fair on them. I also know it’s not fair on Eden either as she has no control of what her government do. It’s why personally, I think Israel just should have withdrawn this year, for everyone involved, including Eden. I get they maybe didn’t want to look like they were giving in to the protesters, but she’s so young, and it’s just a singing contest.

Put it another way - the contestants had no problem being filmed by other nations and them putting it online. But they objected to Israel. Is that acceptable? I don’t. I think it enables and supports the hate and it’s fine for Israel to call it out.

Also to check - are you blaming Israel for Joost Klein attack or have I misread it?

AhNowTed · 13/05/2024 19:53

@JacketPotatoFoodOfTheGods

"Boycotting south african goods helped end apartheid."

In my opinion was the factor that eventually ended apartheid.

Follow the money, and hit them where it hurts. We are nowhere approaching that though.

We’re other contestants getting death threats and having thousands protest outside their hotel? What do other contestants need security for?

Yes we saw the people protesting outside the Eurovision venue against Israel’s involvement.

Please provide
PROOF please of the death threats you refer to.

I have looked myself, in the interests of being open and fare and to avoid wasting your time. However. Nothing. Just the Jerusalem Post saying there were threats.

So
PROOF please

It's basically 'you are anti Semitic' if you express any disagreement with the actions of the Israeli government (and note I said Government, not people). Blowing Gaza to bits is a ok.

Literally NO ONE has said this, i ah e repeated that no one thinks this (including the Holocaust Memorial Trust I quoted, and myself) and yet continuously parrot on anyway and conveniently can’t show any proof

Yes, of course there are Irish people who support Israel... but, let's be real here, not many!

And I'm also Irish and I don't see any reflection in Ireland that poor innocent Eden was bullied by bambie???

Non existent sex? Says the one who called me anti semitic for no feckin reason whatsoever!?? Don't be so quick to accuse others when you're being inflammatory yourself.

You were called anti-Semitic because you continue to spread dangerous misinformation about the only Jewish state to compete in a competition and have stated they used it as a platform to massacre people.
Please do look at the HMT link and perhaps have a bit of self reflection if you’re sick of being accused of being anti-semitic

I'm not entirely sure what you're saying here but I stand by my point that if someone expresses sympathy for the horrors that are being perpetuated in Gaza, it is deemed as being anti Semitic by some people. And that's completely unfair.

That's 2 separate issues you're discussing. Go on Facebook and read the comments of any eurovision discussion. Plenty of hatred on show towards ireland and Greece from Israeli fans. So it makes me antisemitic to point out something that ive seen plenty of? 😂 cut it out would ya! 😂

Just because I don't hand it to you on a plate does not mean I'm lying 😂

Also I didn't claim the promotions had a hate message behind them. Please show me exactly where I said 'hate message'. Honestly your paraphrasing is very inflammatory, and you seem super determined to find me antisemitic... I suppose its antisemitic of me to say that? 🙈

No doubt you've misread it... like every other bloody comment 🙄

Israel and Eurovision

@YaMuvva

"You were called anti-Semitic because you continue to spread dangerous misinformation about the only Jewish state to compete in a competition and have stated they used it as a platform to massacre people."

Can we stop with the exceptionalism please. "Only Jewish state". "Only democracy in the ME".

I come from the only Irish state. My pal comes from the only Welsh state.

I also have friends from the only Jewish state but they don't use that to excuse a genocide, happening in front of our eyes.

Nope... the person who called me antisemitic (in this thread) admitted they were wrong and withdrew the comment and apologised.

Wow 😳 what exactly are you trying to achieve? You seem pretty dangerous tbh... throwing around accusations left right and centre

It’s always this way @DanielGault
Anyone who has been on Mumsnet on the conflict in the Middle East threads since the beginning of the war will have been putting up with this sort of crap for many months now.
The classic gotchas are requesting proof, then the proof isn’t good enough, then it’s name calling.

It’s really best to just post proof at the beginning and move on. Preferably not stuff off twitter 🤪🤣 and preferably evidenced.

Maybe you can’t post proof because it doesn’t exist
