Israel and Eurovision

1000 replies

Carly944 · 12/05/2024 12:16

I've seen all the protests that Israel shouldn't have been allowed to enter the Eurovision. I don't think politics should be part of eurovision

Has everyone forgotten that a lot of countries at this stage have invaded each other, and that a lot of countries have a bloody and violent past.

The United Kingdom invaded many countries and massacred and killed many many people in the past.

Germany have obviously started two world wars.

Spain have invaded countries and done a lot of brutality to people in the past.

Should none of these countries be allowed to enter eurovision then. If we are going to put politics into it, nearly every European country would be banned from eurovision.

Israel is far from the only country in the world that have invaded and massacred people. Its awful, but it has also been awful when other countries did it. And many of them have. So I'm not sure why there was just the call for Israel to be banned

Paranoia, conspiracy and antisemitism all in one brilliant....you just need to say they all have big noses...

It’s just SEEPING in anti-Semitic tones. Jewish people are <checks notes> greedy, bullies liars and thieves

Good to know

I think people reckon they aren’t anti-Semitic as long as they don’t say “I hate Jews”

MumblesParty · 12/05/2024 18:31

Israel are committing genocide currently. For that reason they should be excluded like Russia. It’s disgusting that anyone who criticises Israel’s atrocities is being shut down as an antisemite. It’s just a cheap easy way of discounting someone’s opinion.

That’s not what’s happening though.

Its fine to be anti-Israeli government.

But so many posts on this thread and others are using anti-Semitic tropes to bolster their point. There are also conspiracy theories around the only Jewish state to compete. These tropes were used heavily to get the public on side in Europe about 85 years ago (and in fact even further back) and look what happened then

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 02:40

Also I just want to chip in this, so I can be like every other poster:

Why are non European countries competing in Eurovision?!!?!!!?!!!!

No one has answered this yet 🤣🤣

We're constantly being told by the media that public opinion is moving against Israel or that politicians in an election year need to change their foreign policy on Israel in order not to alienate those people who are taking part in pro-Palestine marches or campus protests, but last night Israel almost won the public vote in Eurovision with what was just an ok-ish mid-table-worthy song. When you look at the full breakdown of voting, Israel was actually awarded more first and second places than the country which narrowly won the public vote.

Ok, this was just Eurovision, but the public vote was undoubtedly a political one. People don't like what happened on October 7th, they don't like the way Israel has been demonised, they don't like the return of rabid anti-Semitism, they don't like the intimidating nature of the 'peaceful' protests, and they really didn't like the way that Malmö and some of the other delegations treated Eden Golan. When they were given the chance to really have their say, they grabbed it.

This Eurovision has really brought out textbook anti-Semitism: Eden Golan was confined to her hotel room because people wanted to kill her but was asked by a journalist if her presence was making everyone else unsafe; fellow and former contestants were either openly hostile or forced by the mob to disavow her company; when she and her team rehearsed performing in front of an angry crowd they were accused of making fun of the protestors; when the Dutch entrant was disqualified due to his own alleged nasty behaviour, the rumour travelled halfway round the world that the Israelis had mocked his dead parents; when that proved not to be true the rumour changed to powerful Israeli sponsors getting him thrown out of the competition; when the truth about the Dutch situation came out it didn't stop some of the spectators venting their frustrations on Eden Golan anyway; when Israel did well in the public vote it was put down to an Israeli conspiracy rather than just the public being mightily pissed off at the injustice of all of the above. It was all a classic example of whatever Israel does its enemies will always find a way of putting it in the wrong.

It’s also ticks all the anti-Semitic trope boxes of Jews being liars, thieves, warmongerers, too powerful and out to get the little man

RadFs · 12/05/2024 18:56

Israel weren’t attacked first pre October 7th Israel have been attacking Palestine on a daily basis but guess what the west want you to think it was all about October 7th. Do you know the hostages would have been released already but the Israeli government don’t want the hostages they want to continue with the war. See beyond what sunak and Biden feed you.

Why do you think the hostages would have been released? Because the terrorist organisation not to be trusted said so?

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 12/05/2024 19:01

I have read about it and watched many documentaries about it, from a variety of sources.
Yes, some people were willing to risk their lives by not joining, but many of those who did join really felt they had no choice. Many ended up in prison or worse, or at the least unemployable in their current profession.

It’s a really interesting subject of if Nazis who claim they had no choice but to join should have been punished for war crimes. I find it a tad convenient that so many say they had no choice. Had Joseph Mengele been captured (and it’s heartbreaking that he evaded justice for his whole life) I imagine he’d have claimed he had no choice but to do what he did. So an interesting debate would be where the line is drawn.

Egypt won’t open their border because Israel will block re entry.

Have Israel stated this?

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 02:50

SplitFountainPen · 12/05/2024 19:24

I'm pretty sure if the US had been attacked in the way the israelis were, and then with continued missile attacks, promises to repeat the barbaric attack, young children taken hostage etc then they would have flattened the country it was originating in.
Likely much quicker and harsher than Israel has been retaliating.

Edited

Well actually Iraq was destroyed because of <checks notes> nothing. It didn’t do anything to anybody. And it was destroyed

GivePeaceAChance · 13/05/2024 02:51

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 02:19

I wouldn’t listen to a word Amnesty International say after their track record of atrocities and anti-semitism

Not just Amnesty International of course @Apolloneuro

There are reports just since the war in October started, investigated, witnessed and / or verified from many different organisations constituting war crimes and or acts against the Geneva Convention.

The list is exhausting and with examples covers 16 pages on Wiki.

( Pages before October last year as well )

@KeinLiebeslied54321 are you from <presses fingers to forehead and hums> the North Pole? No, wait - Saturn?

Kneidlach · 12/05/2024 22:50

Meanwhile Eden Golan is joining the IDF!
Not such a peaceful loving person with no interest in the war after all then!

Or - she’s a person who like many Israelis recognises that for her country to continue to exist it unfortunately needs to have a stronger military than most countries in the world. Due to it, y’know, being surrounded by various countries and terrorist groups that openly call for its destruction.

It’s very easy from our position in a country that doesn’t face an existential threat to handwring about the big bad IDF. But the IDF exists because of the threats that Israel faces. Could anyone on this thread honestly say they wouldn’t want the UK to have a strong military if we were in the same position as Israel?

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Israel is the only Jewish state on the planet. If many people had their way, Jews would, yet again, be exiled from their homes and will be scattered into anti-Semitic countries where the likelihood on Holocaust 2.0 is not as low as it once was. Who can blame any Israeli for wanting to prevent that.

Meanwhile Eden Golan is joining the IDF!
Not such a peaceful loving person with no interest in the war after all then!

You could make that argument for ANY solider - you join the Army you sign up to potential killing. Why is it only ‘unpeaceful’ when Israelis do it?

I'm not speaking about those who clearly carried out war crimes, I'm speaking more about average every day folk, eg teachers.
I'm not justifying brutality, please don't suggest that.

None of that is acceptable.! Ever!
All murder and torture is deplorable…whoever does it!
I assume you

have followed all that’s been going in Gaza over the past months at the hands of the IDF and under the direction of Netanyahu as well. To get a balanced view.
Everything is To achieve his ultimate goal which he presented at the UN general council in September 2023! Of replacing Gaza with Israel

How about leaving babies to rot to death in incubators
Driving over and killing children hiding in cars
Bombing entire housing blocks
Refusing aid entry
Bombing and dismantling all infrastructure to sustain life
Multiple violations being investigated and confirmed as genocide.

let’s not forget the date of that UN meeting shall we.

There is an agreed ceasefire. Agreed by Hamas last week and Israel in April.

It’s time to stop the murder and destruction.

Why should Hamas be trusted after October 7th and the many efforts to get infrastructure in place to carry out attacks?

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 03:03

WalrusOfLove · 12/05/2024 23:24

I think an aspect a lot of people don't consider is that the children of today are the fighters of tomorrow. So whilst it's entirely despicable to kill children I can see why sworn enemies attempt this ethnic cleansing to wipe out all future opposition.

So tell us - who would you like to be ethnically cleansed?

Ace56 · 12/05/2024 23:40

I didn’t realise it had been dubbed - how scary that it’s been manipulated like that.

Still doesn’t explain the seemingly high public votes though, or was that rigged too?

No

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 03:05

TooBigForMyBoots · 13/05/2024 00:21

Peaceful opposition and protest against Netanyahu and the Israeli government's actions is not antisemitism. Quite the opposite.

No one has said it is.

frankincenseandmyrrh · 13/05/2024 03:07

spuddy4 · 12/05/2024 18:37

There's lots of videos from people who were actually at the venue in the audience and the booing was very loud. Clever how they dubbed it out on the tv though but does make you wonder what else is hidden from us.

It wasn't "dubbed" - they used anti-booing technology. Can you imagine the courage of that young woman, singing her heart out, and singing beautifully, while adults booed her for her nationality.

Jumpingthruhoops · 13/05/2024 03:11

Blueemeraldagain · 12/05/2024 12:22

I think part of the issue was excluding Russia and not Israel. They set a precedent with Russia and then didn’t follow through.

Well, not really.

The Russia/Ukraine conflict is pretty black and white: Russia (the bad guys) trying to take over Ukraine (The good guys).

The Israel/Palestine situation is more nuanced - while Israel is very much the bad guy, generally speaking, in this latest action Hamas attacked Israel.

Banning Israel would effectively be saying 'we condone what Hamas did'

Theyre not going to do that are they?

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 03:12

TrishM80 · 13/05/2024 01:37

"but that's war" is not an adequate defence for war crimes.

What I mean is civilian deaths are inevitable

I obviously don’t agree with war crimes - and I marched on the streets in 2003 in protest of the Iraq invasion for that reason. But Hamas KNEW their genocide on October 7th would not result in Israel sitting back doing nothing, or even retaliating fairly, so the blame for what’s has happened to their citizens lays largely at their door. I wonder if they feel their taking of hostages was worth the retaliation that they will have KNOWN was to happen. Netenyahu is hardly a pussycat

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 03:13

GivePeaceAChance · 13/05/2024 01:38

No they haven't
Israel has had a blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, hence the reason it is referred to as an open air prison.

All countries have a right to defend themselves what they do not have a right to do is commit genocide and demolish and decommission all infrastructure to sustain life.

They, as Hamas already have, now need to agree to a ceasefire or cessation of noice as they prefer it to be called.

Yes, they have.

And a terrorist organisation still govern Gaza. Is that not worrying to you?

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 03:14

Kandalama · 13/05/2024 01:40

Agree
It’s worth pointing out that Hamas agree to a two state solution.
Israel do not.

And you believe them? A terrorist organisation with a penchant for kidnap rape and murder.
Even though in their doctrine their mission is to exterminate all Jews?
Is that a group of people to be trusted?

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 03:15

GivePeaceAChance · 13/05/2024 01:49

She was interviewed by The Jewish News and confirmed she would be joining the IDF after Eurovision.
In April I think.

Because Israel have conscription. Not because she’s comping at the bit to murder babies

YaMuvva · 13/05/2024 03:16

Kandalama · 13/05/2024 02:00

The poster wasn’t denying October 7th.

There is nowhere for Palestinians to go because they are being bombed all over Gaza. They are told to go to the south as it’s safe then bombed and shot at as they make their way there. Then bombed when they get there and all aid to them is blocked whilst the IDF block or bomb the roads so all passage to them for aid, ambulances and escape are impossible.
Then they are told to go East, West, North again. Again and again whilst they starve to death
There is nowhere for them to go because if they leave they will never be allowed back as Netanyahus plan for Gaza is for it to be replaced by Israel. Its all he wants. It’s All he has ever wanted as he so clearly declared in September 2023 at the UN general council, Have you seen his map!

I mean Netenyahu is clearly a maniac but it’s obtuse to pretend that Hamas doesn’t play a major part in this and that if they cared for their citizens they could surrender themselves tomorrow.
But they won’t. And I don’t believe they want a ceasefire either
