U.K. Eurovision entry! A lot of pearl clutching

The outrage and comments I have seen about Olly Alexander’s performance is baffling to be honest. So much pearl clutching! Eurovision has always been completely camp and outrageous and yet suddenly he has been portrayed as some kind of disgrace and not representative of the UKs ‘values’ (what the fuck does that mean anyway?)

I like the song, I have seen him perform live at Glastonbury with years and years, he’s good live. Yes he’s openly gay - so what? Surely UK values should be based around tolerance and acceptance and not hysteria because his performance is considered risqué. Would it be considered the same if it was a load of half naked female dancers?

I am heterosexual but not offended by it - it’s just a performance - I hope he wins as he’s a nice guy!

So much pearl clutching!

Camp doesn't equal gay. One of the campest men I know isn't gay.

I never said Abba were gay. I said they were camp. Did you honestly think I was implying they were all gay?? 😆 Cliff Richard in his frilly shirt was also camp. Fashion can be camp. A lot of fashion in the 70s and 80s was incredibly camp.

Camp is to do with being gay though.... even if the two are not mutually exclusive. The men in ABBA were not camp IMO. The whole point about camp is that is is something slightly outside the mainstream - not fashion

FluffyDiplodocus · 11/05/2024 18:27

I don’t like how suggestive a lot of the performances are now on Eurovision in general. I love Eurovision and remember when I was 8 (my DD’s age) watching Eurovision with my Mum and really enjoying it, and was thinking yesterday that I wouldn’t feel comfortable letting my DD watch it with me yet, which is a shame! She’d love the singing and the crazy costumes and sparkly stuff element of it. I suppose it’s after kids bedtime though so isn’t really targeted at families to be fair!

PrincessTeaSet · 11/05/2024 18:27

I didn't think he sang it well but the song is not too bad, definitely seen worse from UK Eurovision entries.
A bit overly sexual but again nothing too remarkable really..not to my taste but don't think I would be horrified at a teenager watching, any more than most music videos

Of course fashion can be camp!

And as for the men in Abba...

"Cliff Richard is religious and therefore unlikely to be in favour of being gay"

I'm not sure what it means to be 'in favour of being gay", but he was publicly in favour of marriage equality.

It was a few yrs ago now, but would be interested to know if there was all this pearl clutching and references to ‘shoving it in kids’ faces’ when Poland had their milkmaid dances suggestively churning butter …

Of course there wasn't 🙄

Luxell934 · 11/05/2024 15:45

Yeah 🤣 go watch his performance

Oh dear me!!! Unfortunately the one I saw gave the game away a little but but it was funny!

And as for the men in Abba...

That was fashion then. That clothing style might have been re-interpreted as "camp" now.

Yeah, I remember it well. All the cool kids were dressed like that 😆

And, as I said, fashion can be camp. That wasn't fashion though - those were costumes. Camp costumes. The band, as an entity, was camp.

Shetlands · 11/05/2024 19:12

My grandchildren (under 10) will be watching - there's nothing that will trouble them or be inappropriate. They watch nature documentaries with animals courting and vigorously mating, they watch lionesses chase, take down and rip apart zebras. Eurovision is just glittery, vulgar camp and is pretty tame compared to what they've already seen!

Well, that's your opinion.

No, that's facts.

Do you think that Abba went around dressed like that in everyday life?

What on earth have you been exposing them too?

Just nature documentaries that they've watched - they're gruesome!

LizzieSiddal · 11/05/2024 19:47

It’s not homophobic, it’s just Eurovision used to be a thing you could watch with your primary aged dc. I wouldn’t do that now, there’s too much sex involved, both hetro and homo, so it’s a no from me.

JohnSt1 · 11/05/2024 19:49

the80sweregreat · 11/05/2024 08:54

It's bonkers this year and don't get me started about ' Bambi thug' . Call that music ...
Best bit about Eurovision is the mumsnet thread on it all , comedy gold
I like Olly , but it probably won't win

I think Bambie Thug has the best song this year, and the best Irish entry ever.

DeeCee7 · 11/05/2024 19:50

EmpressSoleil · 11/05/2024 10:10

Simulated sex acts would not be appropriate for either sex imo

This is my view. Nothing to do with homophobia. The performance was seedy AF. It wasn’t “camp” I have no issue with camp performances. And yes I absolutely would and have said the same about some female performers.

I didn’t know who he was. Haven’t seen him act in anything and don’t follow modern music. But I’m certainly not going to be a fan based on that performance. I love the Swiss song and it was an amazing performance. Apparently that artist is non binary and the song is about their “journey”. It was brilliant. So if I was oh so prejudiced would I feel that way?

I just do not like our entries sleazy performance. The fact it’s a gay sleazy performance isn’t the point.

I just seen the video. Must admit it does seem abit risqué.

When they thrusted in unison that looked very sexual (like simulating topping to use the gay term).

Gay men do get away with alot more when it comes to this kind of art.

They don’t now anyway. I was on a small plane going to a very small airport (Malmö, where Eurovision is tonight). He waited and picked up his own bag and grabbed a taxi. Wouldn’t have noticed him if the air hostesses and my excited DH had not pointed him out. He was very ordinarily dressed.

And I know it’s got nothing to do with anything. 😅

They refused to do the rehearsal, I wonder if they are planning a protest..?

takemeawayagain · 11/05/2024 20:01

I read that Olly Alexander for the semifinal was gyrating with half naked men wearing a red plastic jock strap in a men's toilet. I couldn't decide if it was more hilarious or horrifying.

I'm 66. It hasn't always been camp and outrageous, all of that is relatively new. I'm not clutching my pearls, I'm just completely bored by it all, starting with Conchita Whatisname. Won't be watching. Camp stopped being funny with Kenneth Williams. Just boring now. (Rylan, are you listening?)

I don’t think being camp is meant to be funny?

Christ, if my kids turn out to be gay, I hope they can feel happy being themselves in a an accepting society 🤪

My sibling is gay and doesn’t like oli…thinks it’s all a bit ott.

LindorDoubleChoc · 11/05/2024 20:20

I've boycotted Radio 2 this week because of the word Eurovision coming up literally every 2 minutes (including in the sports broadcasts FFS, I was just waiting for them to wangle it into the news).

I've listened to Heart London all day today and Eurovision has not been mentioned once! It's like a miracle!
