U.K. Eurovision entry! A lot of pearl clutching

The outrage and comments I have seen about Olly Alexander’s performance is baffling to be honest. So much pearl clutching! Eurovision has always been completely camp and outrageous and yet suddenly he has been portrayed as some kind of disgrace and not representative of the UKs ‘values’ (what the fuck does that mean anyway?)

I like the song, I have seen him perform live at Glastonbury with years and years, he’s good live. Yes he’s openly gay - so what? Surely UK values should be based around tolerance and acceptance and not hysteria because his performance is considered risqué. Would it be considered the same if it was a load of half naked female dancers?

I am heterosexual but not offended by it - it’s just a performance - I hope he wins as he’s a nice guy!

So much pearl clutching!

Why are you trying to make this a gay issue ?

Are you saying all gay men act like Olly ?

Like Olly as an actor but hes not a great singer.

Now the great George Michael done a great "so i got caught cottaging" song and very tasteful video.

Exactly. Now that was done well with humour and 20 years ago!

Also everyone keeps referencing It’s a Sin am I the only person who saw him in God Help the Girl?

No you’re not :)

Shetlands · 11/05/2024 17:14

Just watched it on youtube. It's a mind-numbingly boring song and the set looks rank - made me want someone to come out and power wash it!

The dancers were good and the acrobatics were fun but overall the choreography was dull with too much thrusting & humping - not very creative!

FlakyPoet · 11/05/2024 17:16

Maybe I saw a different version from everyone else?

This is the version I watched:

GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight · 11/05/2024 08:53

Completely agree with this
I think it's a great song, and what is it that people are offended about?
Him being gay?
How ridiculous if so. I swear society's going backwards.

Society is going backwards and you can thank the Trans for that and the likes of Rue Paul…

WalkingThroughTreacle · 11/05/2024 17:20

It honestly doesn't bother me. Camp makes me cringe but I believe everyone has a right to happiness and so what if Eurovision has morphed into a bit of a Pride extravaganza? It's not for me but they are having fun and not doing anyone any harm. I'll not watch it because it's not my thing but I would stand up and fight to protect it.

“The fact that the OP insults people by calling them ‘pearl clutchers’ and their actions are ‘hysteria’ speaks more about her bigotry than theirs”

Yea, whatever 🙄

Your comment just about sums you up OP, ignorant , rude and self indulgent.

ShyPoet · 11/05/2024 17:33

@LadyMary50 No we can thank homophobic people for that.

Bululu · 11/05/2024 17:36

Mostly trash anyway. Sign of the times really.

Flaskfan · 11/05/2024 17:42

There was a bloke on r4 the other days analysing what makes a good pop song. Waterloo has all the ingredients. I think he said the Dutch one does too, but I was only half listening. He did say the UK one doesn't. I think when the UK does eurovision it often does a kind of patronising 'let's do what the Europeans like' without avidly seeing what people do like.

Totally impartial viewer here- I'm not a pop ir dance fan, but I like the eurovision spectacle.

It was a few yrs ago now, but would be interested to know if there was all this pearl clutching and references to ‘shoving it in kids’ faces’ when Poland had their milkmaid dances suggestively churning butter …

There was. So much so that Mel Giedroyc reproduced it last year.Grin

I did see that performance. I watch Eurovision every year with DD. And yes I said at the time that I found it sleazy. So yes I am being consistent.

"The trans" 🙄
No, it's not going backwards because of people who are trans or drag queens.
It's going backwards because of attitudes of people who can't cope with seeing people different to themselves, and instead of looking at themselves why they get so triggered by them, blame it on everyone else for "ramming it down our throats" "everyone's gay/trans whatever nowadays" ...
Ru Paul and trans people aren't the problem. Biscuit

Yes what you said 😁

ghostyslovesheets · 11/05/2024 18:00

I mean -come on - George Michael did it MUCH better almost 30 years ago (Jesus really !) with the video for Outside - so his routine is just a cheap copy.

It's an okay song - wont win - I'm not really bothered by the sex stuff - like Sam Smith it's all a bit 'look at me being sooooo outrageous' but it's hardly ground breaking.

It's not homophobic to find it a bit off - it's not to everyone's taste is all.

ghostyslovesheets · 11/05/2024 18:02

The TRA movement is quite problematic for gay people - as they are same SEX attracted but it's 'transphobic' to demonstrate that by not dating people of the opposite sex.

0w1 · 11/05/2024 18:04

I like Spain's song! in a world where you can be young, younger, thin, body positive, gay, obviously gay, trans, non-binary, a cat, a vampire, it just makes a nice change to see a woman who is in her mid fifties. I love the video of all the older people in the club and the women are cheering and happy and the men are like tutt tutt! Go Spain.

CrappySack · 11/05/2024 15:08

Definitely.

Did they all miss the female performer twerking in a thong in 2022? Plus the milkmaids from whatever year that was!

It's definitely not always been " camp and OTT". Have a look for yourself, here are all the winners

You are using Abba to make the point that Eurovision wasn't camp? That gay icon of a band? 70s Disco was the epitome of camp, and there was no shortage of it in Eurovision.

Cliff Richard with his frilly shirt in the 60s - camp.

How camp presents has changed over the years, and just because the Eurovision version of camp in the 60s and 70s might have been more family friendly, doesn't mean it wasn't camp. It was just camp 'of it's time'.

Abba was two married couples. Then men were usually wearing suits typical of the fashion of the time. It wasn't camp at all! Assuming you mean camp in the gay sense. The two men in ABBA didn't present as camp anyway. And frilly shirts are not a new thing either. They were a fashion trend. Cliff Richard is religious and therefore unlikely to be in favour of being gay.

ShyPoet · 11/05/2024 18:07

@Floortile Not just the winners perform.

Camp doesn't equal gay. One of the campest men I know isn't gay.

I never said Abba were gay. I said they were camp. Did you honestly think I was implying they were all gay?? 😆 Cliff Richard in his frilly shirt was also camp. Fashion can be camp. A lot of fashion in the 70s and 80s was incredibly camp.

Surely it’s just more representative of all sections of the population now than in the Bucks Fizz days? Gay men got prosecuted and put in prison back in the day. Isn’t a society where everyone can be themselves a bit nicer?

From what I've heard (haven't watched it yet) it's nothing to do with him being gay

It's the actual content of the performance. But I'm sure compared to many music videos today it won't be much to worry about

I'll watch it later to see what I think

But back in the day, it was just singers standing there singing a song

DramaLlamaBangBang · 11/05/2024 18:21

Shame he's gay then!
