U.K. Eurovision entry! A lot of pearl clutching

Colourofspring · 11/05/2024 08:27

The outrage and comments I have seen about Olly Alexander’s performance is baffling to be honest. So much pearl clutching! Eurovision has always been completely camp and outrageous and yet suddenly he has been portrayed as some kind of disgrace and not representative of the UKs ‘values’ (what the fuck does that mean anyway?)

I like the song, I have seen him perform live at Glastonbury with years and years, he’s good live. Yes he’s openly gay - so what? Surely UK values should be based around tolerance and acceptance and not hysteria because his performance is considered risqué. Would it be considered the same if it was a load of half naked female dancers?

I am heterosexual but not offended by it - it’s just a performance - I hope he wins as he’s a nice guy!

So much pearl clutching!

They refused to do the rehearsal, I wonder if they are planning a protest..?

Supposedly it was a row over the Israeli commentator. Anything could happen though...

Your comment just about sums you up OP, ignorant , rude and self indulgent.

REALLY? And you know all of this about me? It’s laughable that you feel you know this based on a couple of comments.

God mumsnet is a fucking cesspit at times.

Nothing to do with being gay, it's just soft porno shite

fungipie · 11/05/2024 21:16

TV off, pheeeew.

Enough, basta, genug, assez !

Footyfandango · 11/05/2024 21:22

I haven’t seen his performance but I don’t think he should represent us if he doesn’t like our flag: he is 'ambivalent' about the Union Jack flag as it can feel 'divisive' and 'nationalist'

Trying reading and posting the whole actual quote of what he said, you are misleading people

Blackcats7 · 11/05/2024 21:27

I think the whole thing has become about sex and a huge exhibitionist wank.
It’s a far cry from Abba.

Sharptonguedwoman · 11/05/2024 21:50

ShyPoet · 11/05/2024 17:06

It has always been camp. Making Your Mind Up by Bucks Fizz was very camp.
If you mean not openly gat performers, that is true. But thankfully times have moved on.

I’m not homophobic, I don’t get that Buck’s Fizz was camp.

Sharptonguedwoman · 11/05/2024 21:52

Colourofspring · 11/05/2024 08:33

Surely it’s just more representative of all sections of the population now than in the Bucks Fizz days? Gay men got prosecuted and put in prison back in the day. Isn’t a society where everyone can be themselves a bit nicer?

Absolutely not homophobic and all are welcome.

0w1 · 11/05/2024 21:57

Blimey uk song is good, bit the urinal, it's so deliberately sèedy! I'm on the fence about ireland's entry so not judging 😉 Spain's is my favourite.

crumbpet · 11/05/2024 22:05

Combattingthemoaners · 11/05/2024 20:02

I don’t think being camp is meant to be funny?

Yeah was going to say. It's not meant to be a joke!

Funny how you question British values then go on to quote some. Wind your neck in.

@alittleprivacy my point is that the U.K. seems to be going backwards in terms of acceptance of everyone. It’s become a far moee more racist, inward looking, homophobic country than I remember growing up.

I don't know that it is with the younger generation (at least the ones I know). The Sun reading cretins and Daily Mail twerps haven't changed and are the same old, same old. Unfortunately.

hot2trotter · 11/05/2024 22:38

I don't like the song but I do like him. There's a lot of homophobia going on.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 11/05/2024 22:46

My biggest gripe is that it's so fucking long and boring. I just turned the telly on thinking I'd be finding out who had won. Nope. Still droning on.

Off back outside to look for the Aurora Borealis.

Not after Eurovision started surely?

Eurovision started in 1956.
Homosexuality decriminalised in England in 1967.

OneBadKitty · 11/05/2024 23:16

I think the song is ok. However, the performance was horrible. Why does being gay mean you have to make your whole persona and every performance about about your sexuality? It was just depicting the seedy side of gay sex and would be equally bad if it was a similar performance with straight seedy sexual connotations.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 11/05/2024 23:34

I don't like the uk song but Ireland's entry is better.

Colourofspring · 12/05/2024 00:05

@marmaladeandpeanutbutter Irelands song was intense 😂

Eurovision is fun and flamboyant, his performance missed the mark. Noone gives a hoot about him being openly gay, but I could do without watching him run his fingers over a nans crotch. It wasn't even sexy it was more sexual predator.

Myteenhatesme · 11/05/2024 23:11

And 1981 in Scotland, which is incredible.

Maybe I’m being dense here, but why were they dressed as boxers?

Come off it, Bucks Fizz won Eurovision in 1981 not 1881. Gay men were open and well loved on prime TV think ..... Larry Grayson and John Inman.

I personally think Eurovision was a little try hard - Swiss winner dressing like a toddler. But I was pleased to see M&S's American Tan anti-chaffe knickers get a public outing by the Slovenian male back dancers.

AuroraAnimal · 12/05/2024 04:28

The whole performance was supposed to depict a big, seedy gay orgy in a (visibly) dirty mens toilet...complete with urinals. How terribly modern and risqué.

Not really a surprise that people found it distasteful. I thought it was 🤢

And it's nothing to do with homophobia (on my part anyway). I'd find it just as disgusting to watch a performance depicting a big seedy heterosexual orgy in a dirty toilet block. Just...why?

Add that to the fairly poor vocals and the UK thoroughly deserved to lose.
