Anyone watching for Northern Lights tonight?

It’s supposed to be a perfect night to see them in the U.K. the combination of the solar flare and the clear sky means they’re potentially visible from anywhere in the U.K. Just wondering if I’m the only one staring out the window hoping to see something!

Im in the US and the sun is just setting. I have emailed all my friends and am crossing everything that they make it this far south

PalomaColumbine · 11/05/2024 01:22

No editing, just 3 second exposure on night mode. It’s been amazing. We’ve had loads of neighbours out around us too. Really lovely experience.

Thank you, everyone! I had an early night, woke at about 1am with no idea what was happening outside my window until I saw this thread. Anyway, can confirm they are still visible here in the midlands. My photos aren’t as spectacular as some, but the sky is bright pink with streaks of light. Incredible.

I can't see anything ...only 15 miles from Badminton where they can be seen...do I need to look through a camera? - only have old iPhone 6 Plus?

K0OLA1D · 11/05/2024 04:46

Saw them in Newcastle-under-Lyme. Was amazing. The kids were in awe!

They'd faded a lot by us by 12ish

Aussiegold · 11/05/2024 06:52

Well miffed, even through phone camera, zilch in my part of London.

TurquoiseDress · 11/05/2024 07:03

This is an amazing thread! 😍💫

I seem to have had a relatively early night and totally missed the northern lights! Sad

Does anyone know if they will be back tonight?!

What a sight seeing all your photos...the best MN thread for a long time

We're in SE London so not too sure what we would have been able to see anyway

The storm is ongoing, if the sky is clear we might see them again tonight.

You’d see them now if it was dark.

@GlueNoGlue , thank you for starting this thread, I'd have missed them if it weren't for it.

Like other PPs I've been waiting to see them for years and it never worked out. They did have a huge emotional effect on me last night. And, unexpectedly, seeing everyone's photos, some very similar to mine, has made me feel a sort it universal human connectedness I rarely experience. So thanks everyone! 💐

Hoping I can show them to DD tonight 🤞, she was asleep by the time DH and I came out to look - he's was chuffed as me!

Cadela · 11/05/2024 08:30

Stayed up far too late but got a fab shot in the middle of the city so even with light pollution it’s possible to see.

Hopefully it’s happening again tonight, so beautiful!

Oh I'm so happy to read we may be able to see them again tonight! Somehow despite being addicted to the radio and my phone, I missed they were happening and have been seething all morning that I missed them 😂

notimagain · 11/05/2024 08:49

There’s for all the great images…we’re south of the UK by about 10 degrees, in Europe and there was nothing here, certainly at/before local midnight.

Sadly the way these things work means is generally there’s a big upturn in activity once the event starts but then it tails off, meaning night two is usually nowhere near as good as night one.

However never say never so I’ll be checking again tonight, fingers crossed.

CurrentHun · 11/05/2024 08:55

Fantastic thread. I could see white streaks in the sky until 2am and pinkish ‘clouds’ which turned vivid colours in phone view. I thought urban light pollution would ruin it too, but no. What a lovely phenomenon.

Ive always wanted to see them and even travelled to Iceland for them but missed out there as well! Shall definitely be up again tonight and checking.
