Anyone watching for Northern Lights tonight?

It’s supposed to be a perfect night to see them in the U.K. the combination of the solar flare and the clear sky means they’re potentially visible from anywhere in the U.K. Just wondering if I’m the only one staring out the window hoping to see something!

I take it back - I went out again & though still not as bright as the photos it's truly clearly visible on the North Coast, absolutely mind blowing

Im so over the moon that so many are seeing them with the naked eye and that you are loving the experience

I cant see with the naked eye here - which is strange - but Im watching through the camera. Only just dark now and only seeing green but still, makes me feel so happy

I could just make out lines in the sky and red tones with the naked eye but with camera on phone it's quite impressive

Sw London and I can see absolutely nothing, is it the light pollution?

CointreauVersial · 11/05/2024 00:05

Oh my goodness!!

Been on my bucket list for ever. I live in Surrey, in a village, so figured I wouldn't see them, but just looking out of the bedroom window we could see pink. I turned off the garden lights and lay on my back in the garden and watched the sky for half an hour. Streaks of pink, stretching high in the sky, stripes slowly moving like curtains, then fading, then coming back. It got better as my eyes got used to the dark. Just me and a small bat doing loops around the patio.

No photos, as I couldn't work out how to take them on my ancient android, but I'm so pleased I've seen them.

And a slightly more clear one...

Sadly I'm in London 😕

They are visible in London, not as bright as further north, but definitely visible. We have got those awful bright streetlights, but I can see them from the back garden.

Yep

You do need a dark sky and anywhere in london is going to be hard/impossible Try looking through your camera lense. You might not get a picture but you might see them

I've just skimmed the messages so may have missed this question, but why is it so much more visible on a camera? We went down to the beach which was buzzing at nearly midnight (the teenagers enjoying a normal Friday night were very confused). I joined the crowds staring at a greyish haze, very underwhelming, but pink purple and green visible by phone camera? I properly saw them in the middle of Canada once and it was astounding. I'm enjoying all of your pictures though.

I think this is my favourite thread ever! I’ve given up and come in now but seeing everyone’s photos are just amazing! Feeling so lucky tonight, I’ve always wanted to see them and they’re literally outside my front door!
