I don’t generally care about the Met Gala, but my jaw dropped when I saw this photo.

Can you imagine walking around looking like this?!

To think Anok Yai is one of the most beautiful women on earth?

They want to stand out and be different. A standard but beautiful dress won't get as many column inches.

I knew Alok being very slim would spark resentful comments. Rita Ora got a ton of attention for her outfit and she's curvy. Very slim people are constantly and openly bashed, so it's nice that there is an industry where this body type fits in and is accepted.

The woman being discussed is named ‘Anok’. Not ‘Alok’.

She is beautiful in an otherworldly way - those cheekbones.
I agree with Audrey Hepburn, I think it was to do with her charm though - her smile was like the sun coming up, it made her radiant.

I always thought Rachel Weisz was the most amazingly beautiful woman I'd ever seen. In About A Boy I can't take my eyes off her.

Also Van Pelt from The Mentalist - Francesca something?
But someone mentioned Monica Bellucci uptrend, who I'd never heard of so googled - WOW!

And why are you saying this to me? I was only responding to the person who, like me, doesn't become attracted to celebrities. It was somewhat off-topic.

To be quite honest, the way OP eagerly jumped on and shamed @Willyoujustbequiet suggests she started this thread just to virtue-signal about thinking a black woman is the most beautiful. She was looking for the opportunity to be sanctimonious.

As are you, quite frankly. No one needs yet another a lecture about "European beauty standards" claptrap.

What are you talking about???

Finding a black woman attractive is virtue signalling?????!? Do you realize how racist that sounds?

And why is discussing European beauty standards a bad thing? Why would stating the bloody obvious be an issue?

I did not say that finding a black woman attractive is virtue signalling, stop straw manning. As I said, OP gleefully jumping on and "educating" the other poster is what showed her intentions for what they are. She couldn't fucking wait.

European beauty standards is a bunch of propaganda to justify hating white women. The features described as being "standard" for white beauty are completely atypical for how 99.99% of white people actually look. I'll believe in it when European people stop giving themselves skin cancer to be tanned, or injecting muck into their lips.

If thin lips, boney noses, narrow faces, mousy hair and early wrinkles were celebrated, then you might have a point.

slore · 08/05/2024 17:48

MarzipanGenius · 08/05/2024 15:45

Indeed. Black women finding other Black women attractive are sanctimoniously ‘virtue signaling’ and Eurocentric beauty standards are claptrap. We made them up for shits and giggles.

I’m not surprised you agree with Willyoujystbequiet.

Oooh, the dogwhistles are out.

Get over yourself, you couldn't wait to get on your pulpit.

Yes, she's beautiful, as most of the thread concur. No, people don't have to agree with you, and it doesn't mean they're racist.

tridento · 08/05/2024 17:49

@Sillystrumpet

Seriously? I mean Megan is attractive but she’s hardly beautiful,it would be a rare person who thought that.
Call me rare then. I think she's absolutely beautiful. Regardless of what people think of her I find it hard to believe anyone could objectively suggest she is not beautiful. She's stunning and the way she wears such sheer makeup other than on her eyes gives her a gorgeous natural radiance.

I think you’ll find that there were over 100 comments before that, many of which didn’t agree she was beautiful. If my intentions were to ‘educate’, I was clearly biding my time.

That’s the thing with racists. You really don’t care whether you even make sense.

European beauty standards is a bunch of propaganda to justify hating white women.

I’d like to know who all these more attractive women are that some commenters have seen. I, personally, do not live in a world where this woman is ‘meh’. 🤣

Meghan Markle and Kaley Cuoco are both extremely pretty, but they’re not supermodel tier, imo. Which Anok is.

I agree that Zendaya is also spectacularly beautiful.

Supermodels have never been specifically about beauty though. They are structurally extraordinary and stunning but I wouldn't say models are the pinnacle of beauty. Not by what most would call beauty anyway. Some supermodels have been beautiful. Others have been striking but peculiar looking. I wouldn't hold 'supermodel as an indicator of who is the most beautiful.
Anok Yao is STUNNING. Straight up extraordinary but I wouldn't say she was more beautiful than many others mentioned on this thread.

Every one has a different opinion on what is beautiful or not. I do think Anok is beautiful but definitely don't think Angelina Jolie is.

I thought Kaley Cuoco was pretty when she was younger in Big Bang Theory but now I think she looks very ordinary, even plain

Angelina jolie? She's obviously older now so it's not really fair to compare her to women in their 20s and early 30s but how does anyone not think she was GORGEOUS

@MarzipanGenius

If the only people you can conceive of as spectacularly beautiful are three white women, your view of beauty is narrow and entirely white. This is a factual statement. Nothing ridiculous about it.

You being mixed race has absolutely no impact on this.

ETA: you can be as offended as you like, still a factual statement.
I think with a sum of 3 women this impossible to draw a conclusion about someone's view of beauty being solely white.
At this moment these 3 women are the only ones the poster can think of that mesmerise him. At another time it maybe different people. Had they listed 20 women who were all white I would possibly agree with you but 3 is too small a sample size to draw any conclusions
In any case Kendell Jenner is half Armenian. Whilst this is obviously not black, it's not white in the Margot Robbie sense.
For what it's worth I am half East Asian.

Chirawehaha · 08/05/2024 15:23

I’m just going to copy and paste.

You’ve had your very racial clear bias pointed out and are now casting about wildly to find a way in which you’ve been victimised. Thing is, we can all see the exchange, so your revisionist version isn’t going to fly.

Again, nobody is putting pressure on you to find Anok beautiful. You’re entitled to your opinion.

People are questioning why you cannot think of a single POC who you find beautiful. That’s what you’re being queried on. It’s certainly your ‘absolute right’. It is also clearly very biased. Which multiple people have pointed out, but you seem incapable of self reflection.

I did say I didn't want to engage with the OP further but I certainly didn't announce my departure. So while slightly exasperated at the blatant misquoting I find it an interesting topic and I'm grateful that others share my feelings. The support is most appreciated

I've already addressed your points in an earlier reply.

Thank you.

By no stretch of imagination is 3 as a snapshot at one moment in time a bias of any kind. Its just silly for anyone to suggest it. As @slore pointed out the reaction to my comment was done almost gleefully as if they couldnt wait to be offended. That's the impression I got anyway.

I don't understand the mentality at all. It's as if it's being nasty for the sake of it.

I think it really depends on what one considers beautiful. For me, I think ‘structurally extraordinary and stunning’ pretty much sums it up.
I think most people's definition of beautiful includes some level of prettiness beyond striking or extraordinary. Some degree of 'god I wish I was that good looking' or 'they are super attractive'.
Devon Aoki, Alek Wek and Kirsten Mcmenamy are examples off the top of my head are people who were at the top of the chain model wise. Totally striking. Amazing models but not beautiful in the sense most people would think of as beautiful. I personally thought they were amazing looking. But not attractive

The only wild accusation was of racial bias made against a person of colour based on a total of 3 names. Talk about clutching at straws. People have seen right through it despite repeated attempts to twist it.

I believe I already answered you so unless you you want to ask anything different then we will have agree to differ.

I suppose the question should be 'is there anyone ever that is/was not white that you have considered beautiful'. I took it more that right now in the current crop of beauties, there isn't anyone they find beautiful.

Perhaps they could come back and clarify

Rubyupbeat · 08/05/2024 18:58

I don't see her as beautiful, in photos where she isn't full of make up, she seems quite plain.
But everyone has different tastes.

I'm black and I'm pretty sure the others who addressed you last night about your comments were also black - because being mixed race doesn't exempt you from internalising euro-centric beauty standards (just like being black wouldn't). Colourism is a huge problem in the black community for this reason. No one on this thread accused you of being racist. However look at the posts from your (I'm presuming white) defenders - they've outed themselves as racists. Are those your allies? Are you happy for people to shit on black women in order to defend you from factual observations?

I'm never shocked by racism on mumsnet - it's the norm. But as a black woman, I am saddened by your stance on this and your refusal to accept the obvious.
