I don’t generally care about the Met Gala, but my jaw dropped when I saw this photo.

Can you imagine walking around looking like this?!

To think Anok Yai is one of the most beautiful women on earth?

She’s beautiful but I don’t get that OMG moment like I do with say Jodie Turner-Smith. She looks beautiful and somehow regal in wacky red carpet looks.

Some of this thread is reminding me of around the time of the Barbie press tour, some men claimed that Margot Robbie was ‘mid’ Grin

Jodie Turner-Smith is ridiculously stunning. I didn’t really like her Met Gala look, this year, but she’d look good in anything!

And, yes, some of these comments are exactly like that! 🤣

I don't think being mixed race changes anything. White beauty is seen as ideal and it affects all of us. Even those of us who aren't white.

My sister stopped straightening her hair last year and was so shocked that she felt beautiful with her natural black hair.

Black girls grow up wanting to look like white Barbie. We know this. Studies have been done on this.

The idea that a mixed race woman would only like white beauty isn't ridiculous, it's literally what society has done to us.

I named 3 people and pointed out that I don't find many people attractive in general.

I could understand if I had said I would never find an entire race attractive or had never but that obviously isn't the case. It just happens to be currently 3 white women. It's a stretch and a half to extrapolate that into I have a narrow white version of beauty. Beggars belief really.

I won't be told who to find attractive or not for fear of being labelled. That is indeed coercive. It's the same argument used by TRAs.

It was hugely arrogant of an earlier poster to presume to tell me what I think. Clearly just looking for a spat but their own assumptions tripped them up.

Josette77 · 08/05/2024 00:56

Are you black? You just said mixed raced.

If you're black surely you are aware of how darker skinned women are treated compared to light skin?

Even in the black community white beauty is idealized to the detriment of black girls.

I identify as mixed and yes of course I'm aware.

It doesn't change the fact I only picked 3 people (Margot Robbie in particular above the other two). Its my current personal preference regarding those 3 to which I'm perfectly entitled.

I think it's really quite unsavoury that I was pressurised into justifying my choice. It screams prejudice and indeed misogyny to me and I have nothing but contempt for those that seek to control women in such a way.

Me: Do you have examples of women who aren’t white who you consider mesmerising?

You said ‘no’. That’s why we’re all having this conversation. No stretches. Nothing to do with assumptions and nobody has been ‘tripped up’.

I didn’t attempt to convince (or ‘coerce’) you into thinking Anok was beautiful. I asked you if you could name ANYONE beautiful who wasn’t white. And you couldn’t think of a single person.

It’s genuinely shocking that you lack the self awareness to see that is a narrow white view of beauty.

Don’t know this generation of models but she is incredibly beautiful imo

I said stop engaging and you keep doing it. It's unfortunate you aren't capable of respecting that request or indeed a person's right to a freedom of choice/preference. It saddens me that a black woman would do this to another.

I've got the measure of you.

Please leave me alone.

augustusglupe · 08/05/2024 01:46

She’s attractive but has so much makeup on it’s hard to tell if she’s beautiful.

It’s my thread. If you want to stop engaging, then stop commenting on it. It’s really very simple. At this point, you’re the one who is incapable of leaving me alone.

And I can assure you that everything you’ve written here has saddened every Black woman that’s read it.

I've always thought the only word for Anok Yai is ethereal. The first time I saw a picture of her, I did a web search to check whether she genuinely existed! Her features are so symmetrical that it seemed more plausible that it was a photograph of a sculpture of an idealised woman, than a photograph of a living, breathing being.

I'm not sure that the outfit particularly flatters her, but Yai could look beautiful in a sack, so no-one is going to be calling for her stylist's head.

I get where you are coming from. I'm like you, I rarely find people attractive, just looking at someone doesn't really do it for me. I need to see them, like their whole personalities to find them attractive The threads on here perving over men leave me cold. I can't remember the last time I looked at a photo of a celeb and went wow, they are beautiful, I certainly couldn't write a whole list of them, most of them look in or around the same to me. Obviously they are all good looking but it's rare someone would stand out to me as wow. The whole ranking thing the OP was doing in another post of levels of attractiveness, I could never, like I said most celebs are about the same to me.

I used to think there was something wrong with me that I wouldn't want to shag celebs or be moved by their looks in any way but I'm nearly forty now and have just accepted that I'm not built that way. My post isn't really relevant to the thread so apologies to the OP for derailing but I saw you were getting a bashing and just wanted to say you aren't alone in just not really being able to name off numerous people who you find stand out attractive.

Thank you. I appreciate it. I'm glad someone gets it.

Never heard of her before. But just checked Instagram and google and wow, she really is something special

incredibly striking and stunning in every way - she would get the attention in any room

but I don’t like her outfit from last night - as striking as it is

Iaskedyouthrice · 08/05/2024 02:53

I agree OP. Absolutely stunning. I wish I looked as 'plain' as her with no make up on!
I find it interesting that posters have managed to be arseholes on an innocuous thread about a beautiful woman. A beautiful black woman no less.

slore · 08/05/2024 03:06

I voted YABU on two counts: firstly I don't believe that beauty can be ranked like that. No one is the most beautiful in the world. Also, it's a bit subjective.

Secondly, while she has always been striking and beautiful, and she certainly looks stunning there, I think like most celebrities she has had some subtle work done.

I'm the same. I can see if someone is attractive but I can't get worked up about them. I always thought that people were exaggerating to be funny when they gush over celebrities, especially male ones.

I think Megan is stunningly beautiful!

Same!

CwmYoy · 08/05/2024 06:28

@MarzipanGenius

You asked who I consider beautiful - no one comes close to Audrey Hepburn. She had a timeless beauty beyond trends of the time. Farrah was beautiful but very much of her time. Similarly Marilyn Monroe.

The most beautiful man, for me, was Jim Morrison of the Doors. But probably again, much of his time.

Bridgetta · 08/05/2024 07:01

Can’t believe people are comparing Meghan to Anok lol. One is a supermodel. You cannot compare the two, she’s an ordinary sort of pretty whereas Anok would be unforgettably beautiful. No slight on her, but we shouldn’t expect actresses to look quite this way

Bumblebee907 · 08/05/2024 07:03

Not for me, prefer more petite women and love blue eyes 😎

margymary · 08/05/2024 07:04

My money is on Halle Berry, Jodie Cormer, Elle Mcpherson ,Isabella Rosellini and Audrey Hepburn.

The OG supermodels were stunning Naomi, Christy, Cindy and I’d add Eva and maybe Tyra as second generation but a lot of supermodels are all about showing the clothes and not beautiful in the same way as actresses are. I’d consider more actresses typically beautiful than models. Each to their own as they say.

I'm the same. I can see if someone is attractive but I can't get worked up about them. I always thought that people were exaggerating to be funny when they gush over celebrities, especially male ones.

But that’s different- no one expected or asked that poster to gush over the model. The issue the poster was called out on stemmed from her comment that the model was not attractive in any way. Which combined with the poster’s inability to name one beautiful non-white celebrity, suggests a Euro centric ideal of beauty.

The model may not be everyone’s preference but in no way is she average or plain. It’s not about a need to gush over celebrities but admitting to an underlying (and very common) whitewashed view of beauty standards.

Bululu · 08/05/2024 08:13

I googled her she looks amazing in that photo at the met gala in others not so much. Definitely a beauty but that pose and photo are quite outstanding from the crowd.

Don't misquote me.

I was not one of the other posters who called her plain. I also did not say she was not attractive in anyway, I said I didn't find her attractive at all and went on to explain that I don't find many people attractive. Talk about selective!

I haven't taken issue with anyone else's choices but those who haven't agreed about Anok have been piled on. AiBU isn't an echo chamber.

Weve had the body positivity movement and seen some changes but young and pretty is still the catwalk currency. Youth and beauty is seen as aspirational. I'd prefer to see a range of stunning women on the catwalk. Eva Longoria, Meryl Streep.

But it doesn't sell. Women aren't supposed to be comfortable with aging. That's why products for mass consumption are marketed in terms of "youthful glow", "reduce wrinkles" etc. We are all supposed to want to look 20 at 60.

As I get older the more I see the nuanced beauty of confidence, kind eyes etc. I love that you can tell what side someone sleeps on by the wrinkles on their face.

I get that the catwalk is just a show like the theatre, but I think it wild benefit from more diversity across the board. Different is interesting. Not one kind of different that sets people apart (beauty).
