To have pointed out to super enthusiast vegan where pearls come from?

I went out with some friends today and one of them bought a friend of hers we'd not met before. She would not let up with the vegan stuff - kept lecturing us about where our meat came from, how cows were tortured to make our cheese, how hens were mistreated to lay our eggs etc. etc. it was embarrassing - our poor friend who'd bought her along was obviously mortified. She said later that she knew they were vegan but had never heard them talking like that before.

Finally I'd had enough and asked her about her necklace saying it was beautiful and were the pearls real... she confirmed they were and I said "Oh that really surprises me that a vegan would wear something from a living creature round her neck"

Astonishingly she didn't know where pearls came from and believe me we took some pleasure telling her how oysters were cut open and the pearls were taken from their bodies....

We all ate our ice cream in peace Grin

No, I think porn jokes died them a death.
Although I'm pretty sure a 'manmade' one would be vegan and totally ethical. It's not like they don't enjoy producing them 😂

Well, we use our special spotlight to find the thread, like Batman. It's an avocado instead of a bat though and unfortunately as it's from temu it looks a bit like a oval poo, so some vegans get the call late. Thankfully, our backup klaxon works fine.

BitterAndTwistedClub · 06/05/2024 23:24

Brilliant. I had an extreme vegan visitor who made an exaggerated sniffing motion with everything she ate. Picked up her carrot baton and twirled it round whilst breathing deeply. I was deeply insulted as I felt as she was silently accusing me of smearing every vegetable with some unseen animal product. It was a very long evening.

Oh give over it's nothing to do with the fact they don't use animal products why most people dislike vegans, I really dont give a monkey's what they eat.

It's their selfrighteous attitude a lot of them tend to have, they shove it in our faces, and its the fact that they think they have the right to tell us omnivores we should be eating like herbivores

Exactly this. It’s pathetic.

WinterDeWinter · 07/05/2024 00:01

The thing is, lots of vegans do feel really appalled by the cruelty to animals involved in industrial farming (so basically almost all meat and dairy) and feel a genuine responsibility to do something about it. Like if you saw cruelty happening to an individual animal in the street, you’d also feel compelled to try and stop it.

We’re really not trying to be wankers. I understand that it makes you uncomfortable when you’re actually eating, but .. I guess she thinks that’s the point? I agree it’s unlikely to work, because you clearly feel so uncomfortable that you shut down.

But you playing touché with the pearls isn’t the own you think it is. She’s been unaware of something which she now understands - it doesn’t change the fact that she’s right about industrialised animal cruelty.

MonsteraMama · 07/05/2024 00:08

Heard this one many times before. Sometimes it's a pearl necklace or pearl earrings, occasionally leather belt or shoes. Interesting how often this exact scenario plays out!

aurynne · 07/05/2024 00:21

Bahahahaha

I have a very similar story about a vegetarian during a marshmallow roast... she cried.

Aswellisnotoneword · 07/05/2024 00:34

I've been on and off vegie/vegan for many years and while I'm not saying this happened here, often I'm just minding my own business and the baiting conversation is started by the meat eaters,

First, one of my companions will feel compelled to explain apologetically to the group/fuss over the menu pointing out all the suitable options to me.
Now that everyone's attention is on me and my food choices, someone will ask me why I'm vegetarian/vegan. (Why? Why do people care?)
I'll reply a breezily as possible but honestly, along the lines of "oh lots of reasons really but mostly because of animal cruelty".
Before I know it I'm on the receiving end of a tirade about preachy vegans, and UPFs and the poor wee insects that got sprayed dead so my soy beans could grow.

I keep a necklace of hemp pearl imitation especially for a scrolling Mumsnet and clutching them.

Grin

People also forget that vegan is a diet for some people, not a whole lifestyle. Some people are just averse to the idea of consuming dead animals, that doesn't mean their whole lifestyle has to be perfect in every way.

And in terms of suffering, there is absolutely a difference between a mammal that has been held in appalling conditions its whole life only to be crammed onto a truck and lined up to be killed in an abbatoir, and an oyster being shucked. Obviously. Though I am not supporting either.

Mumoftwo1312 · 07/05/2024 00:50

Op's story may or may not be true but I genuinely had a moment with an avid vegetarian, years ago, who brought taramesalata to a picnic. She said it was made of fish eggs and she's happy to eat eggs so it's fine. I said basically, I'm happy if you're happy, but you know fish roe is inside the fish and part of the meat. Not like, some eggs laid externally like frogspawn and scooped up. She'd had no idea. But we both kept eating it and that was that!

Mumoftwo1312 · 07/05/2024 00:52

Separately, just wanted to point out that shellfish farming is really good for the environment as it is a fast carbon capture method (lots of CO2 gets used creating the carbon content in the hard shells).

Why wouldn’t it? I’ve met “vegans” wearing leather shoes 🤷‍♀️
