To have pointed out to super enthusiast vegan where pearls come from?

I went out with some friends today and one of them bought a friend of hers we'd not met before. She would not let up with the vegan stuff - kept lecturing us about where our meat came from, how cows were tortured to make our cheese, how hens were mistreated to lay our eggs etc. etc. it was embarrassing - our poor friend who'd bought her along was obviously mortified. She said later that she knew they were vegan but had never heard them talking like that before.

Finally I'd had enough and asked her about her necklace saying it was beautiful and were the pearls real... she confirmed they were and I said "Oh that really surprises me that a vegan would wear something from a living creature round her neck"

Astonishingly she didn't know where pearls came from and believe me we took some pleasure telling her how oysters were cut open and the pearls were taken from their bodies....

We all ate our ice cream in peace Grin

Boom tish!
Very good!

Theunamedcat · 06/05/2024 21:57

I worked at a place where the vegan manager would shout in the canteen "whose eating chicken periods" "dead carcass alert!" No-one could say anything because they were a freaking manager I used to go outside and stand with the smokers instead

Most vegans are great but like everything you get some vocal nutters that don't represent anyone but themselves

I've come out of my shell - sorry I was looking for a missing calculator

Strange and bizarre though it seems it is true. I found it all very weird myself. Apologies to anyone that disappoints - I know how Mumsnet loves a bit of troll hunting.

Also if anyone thought this was vegan bashing - again I apologise. As I say I've not problem with vegans just with being lectured about what I'm eating.

@TwattyMcFuckFace That was actually quite funny as shell related jokes go Grin

Reminds me of one of the Just Stop Oil protesters - blond girl, Polly/Poppy something like that and in every photo of her waving her placard, shouting her slogans she's wearing these big orange and pink PLASTIC earrings.......🙄

Bloody well done!!! That's hilarious! Bet that shut her up!

I do find it interesting that you think Oyster harvesting is beyond the pale, but gassing pigs for bacon is fine.

Not a 'lecture'. Just an observation.

I don’t think they do think that. They just wanted to knock the vegan down a peg or two. Assuming it even happened at all of course.

Are you taking the piss or are your observation skills not working? OP doesn't appear to have an issue with pearls, she was surprised a vegan didn't have an issue with them.

Where have I said that is what I think? If I'm willing to eat gassed pig I'm hardly going to have a problem with oyster harvesting.

I was informing a vocal vegan of a fact I felt she needed to know - just like she spent time informing us of facts she felt we needed to know. End of. I am not sure how you draw from that I have a problem with it?

But the OP didn't say either of those things? 🤔

And if your op is true, what's to be unreasonable about. It's an exchange of facts. She told you about hideous animal cruelty and you continued to eat their secretions.
You told her about pearls and she continued to wear them. An exchange of facts and everyone did what they wanted. What's not to like?

Cows would eat us??? I thought they were herbivores... tell me more about these omnivorous cows... do they taste better than the usual ones?

I will look forward to reading about them in the morning after bacon and eggs but right now I have to go to bed and clutch my pearls - and yes mine are real my grandmother gave them to me.

good night all.
