Noises in kitchen, absolutely shitting myself

First of all, I have a huge phobia of rats. To the point I can’t function if there is one nearby. I have fainted before when seeing one as a teenager.

anyway, partner is currently out with a mate and won’t be home for a few hours. I cooked my dinner and left his portion on the kitchen counter next to microwave for him to warm up when he gets in, as I’ll likely have gone to bed by then. Went back into living room and put TV on not thinking anything of it, door to kitchen slightly ajar. I can now hear rustling noises. Really weird, the dryer and washer aren’t on and I can’t think of anything else that would explain the noise. It’s really loud though, like something has taken food from the plate and is dragging it along the kitchen floor/kitchen counter, I’m genuinely terrified and physically can’t move from the sofa to go and look. The kitchen counters are raised a few inches from the floor so would be easy for rats to be under there. I’m really frightened so please talk to me until partner gets home as I genuinely am stuck to the sofa with fear.

Shamelessly placemarking…

(before a resigned shrug that it was just another bored Sunday night creative writing exercise)

Why to god is there no update???!??!!!

OP has sadly gone.

The same way as the lady with the dog walking through a field with angry crows.
I still think about that thread every time I walk my dogs and they disturb crows in fields. Very sad and a lesson to us all! That was a brilliant thread, so so so funny and educational too.

I actually can't believe that an adult would just run upstairs when they have heard noises that suggest that an animal of some sort is in the kitchen. If it's that loud it's obviously not a rat and the the potential damage not to mention clean up job of leaving whatever it is - a cat or a squirrel just roving around is unbelievable.

If it was a rat or a mouse if you banged about a bit as you approached it would run off so there is no need to be that scared.

Even allowing for a rat phobia, given it almost certainly is not a rat, just running off is the most stupid thing to do.

Yeah but what if it runs TOWARDS you?

I had a rat come in the kitchen door. My dog alerted me there was something there. When I looked down the back of the chest freezer I could see its profile. I had to drag the dogs away and shut the front room door and hope it left by itself.

When I went back in the kitchen I had to cross it to go in the bedroom to get my shoes, whereby I realised that door had been open and it could have gone in there instead of out the back door 😩 Or attack my feet as I crossed the room.

Eventually I go my shoes on and psyched myself up to move the fridge and freezer to check it had gone.

Its only by a miracle that I am still here today and it didn't jump out and chew my neck open.

It had left of its own accord.

But the fear was real. As were the fucking night terrors that there was a rat in the bed ffs.

Yellowbananasarebetterthangreen · 06/05/2024 14:02

Im with you op. I freak out totally regarding mice. Obviously rats are worse! Ive experienced both.
Placemarking for the update re what it is/was. No idea why someone said "rats dont make that much noise" - They for sure can make a lot of noise!

Was it all a dream!

SammyScrounge · 06/05/2024 14:17

Maybe it was the bear which do many said they would rather meet than a man! Gulp!

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 06/05/2024 15:42

I expect the salmon came back to life, scuffled all the potato wedges across the floor then swallowed the rat, then swallowed the cat to catch the rat, then swallowed the OP and the tipsy Mr OP, then fell asleep.

It's the only explanation, if you think about it.

Louise303 · 06/05/2024 13:33

So funny reminds me of the YouTube prank to a pest control company regarding noisy pigeons.

Haha.. Phone jacker.....'I'm a mouse!'...used to love that back in the day.

CaravaggiosCat · 06/05/2024 16:22

I've not seen that one I meant this one...not the gory one 😳

Nanaof1 · 06/05/2024 16:36

Well, after 6 pages with no sign of the OP, either it was a big old rat that scared her to death or the "cat" was actually a tiger that had escaped from the zoo and had the OP for dessert.

No other scenario makes sense......😇😱😖😉

WhoGivesaSpit · 06/05/2024 16:44

Can only assume OP has been taken by the rat Lord and is being held at his pleasure in the nearest sewer.
Her poor partner returned only to find a lukewarm salmonella riddled dinner and a hastily written ransom note from Rattington IV

nikki1391 · 06/05/2024 16:59

I completely understand your reaction, I would have been the same.

I went to throw my bin out earlier and a rat ran out, I legged it to my car so quick 😭my fear would be through the roof if I heard loud noises in my kitchen

Please do update us asap, I hope it was a cat rather than rat !!!

No, the butler did it for sure. 😉

What about if it was a snake lol

The same thing applies - you need to know what it is to take appropriate action to avoid bigger problems.

If it's a snake, then you probably need a vet (assuming likely escaped pet) and to coral it or trap it - because if it disappears into the house then you've got a much bigger problem - sleepness nights until you find it for one thing.

Running away like a child is just a really pathetic and irresponsible attitude for an adult to adopt. If you really have a phobia that severe (which I doubt), then it is your responsiblity as an adult to address that yourself and seek help. Worse case scenario get a neighbour to assist.

Bottom line is a problem like that is only going to become a bigger problem if you don't address it immediately.

Sauvblanctime · 06/05/2024 17:13

Oh man is this gonna be another crow lady post??

Buildinganark · 06/05/2024 17:33

The OP's worst fears have been realised.

Livelovebehappy · 06/05/2024 17:33

Absolutely terrified of rats. Goes back to when I opened the door to my cellar steps, where my shoe rack is, and there was a rat sitting in one of my shoes staring straight at me. I can’t remember a lot of what happened afterwards - only that my blood curdling screams brought half the street out. Apparently an ‘opportunist’ rat which was flying solo, and snuck in whilst I was out hanging the washing….traumatised doesn’t even come close to describing it. Really hope it wasn’t a rat, and OP is okay..

BotterMon · 06/05/2024 17:37

Since OP hasn't updated has she been abducted by the alien that was stealing the salmon?

HateMyselfToo · 06/05/2024 17:59

I want a mumsnetter to come on and say her cat sauntered through the door with a chunk of salmon last night - Or could just be placemarking as I'm overly invested.

A shoe rack in the cellar??? Don’t your shoes get filled with woodlice/spiders/frogs??

It's at the top of the cellar steps in a carpeted little area. It's not your conventional cellar, but one which has an outside door out into the back garden. But yes, I do tip my shoes upside down and give them a good shake before putting them on to make sure no insects - never thought about frogs though - something else to worry about....

LemonadeQueen · 06/05/2024 19:14

Was it a cat? Dont leave us hanging! Hope your ok OP.

Jem57 · 06/05/2024 19:15
