Noises in kitchen, absolutely shitting myself

First of all, I have a huge phobia of rats. To the point I can’t function if there is one nearby. I have fainted before when seeing one as a teenager.

anyway, partner is currently out with a mate and won’t be home for a few hours. I cooked my dinner and left his portion on the kitchen counter next to microwave for him to warm up when he gets in, as I’ll likely have gone to bed by then. Went back into living room and put TV on not thinking anything of it, door to kitchen slightly ajar. I can now hear rustling noises. Really weird, the dryer and washer aren’t on and I can’t think of anything else that would explain the noise. It’s really loud though, like something has taken food from the plate and is dragging it along the kitchen floor/kitchen counter, I’m genuinely terrified and physically can’t move from the sofa to go and look. The kitchen counters are raised a few inches from the floor so would be easy for rats to be under there. I’m really frightened so please talk to me until partner gets home as I genuinely am stuck to the sofa with fear.

We had a tiny little mouse going through our Advent calendar and ruffling through wrapping paper. It made such a noise that it woke me up upstairs. Here’s hoping it wasn’t a rat!

Oh that’s sort of sweet- esp if he only opened one advent treat a day! He probably will tell his grandchildren about the kind family who once “left out” mice treats in the run up to Christmas! 🐭

We had mice thieve all our Easter Eggs. I know because the chocolate bunny had bite marks...

Did you get sorted - what was it????

Shan5474 · 06/05/2024 11:06

OP and DH have been eaten by the rat 😫

littlecurtainsdoorway · 06/05/2024 11:17

I'm gripped. I want to know what it was! 😂

Startingagainandagain · 06/05/2024 11:23

If your window was open it could be many things: a bird, squirrel to a neighbour's cat...

I even have foxes coming into my garden and I am sure if I had food around & a window open they would not hesitate to try to steal that.

Not necessarily a rat.

potato57 · 06/05/2024 11:28

Exposure to a phobia is the best way to cure a phobia. If it wasn't a rat, you should fill your house with them anyway.

ellebelli · 06/05/2024 11:33

We used to have a rat come into our garden to get the bird seed.
Rat would climb up the pole and cling onto the bird feeder.
Cute

Mice came into both mine and DM’s houses as we both had bird feeders attached high, mine was near a bird table. Mice would climb to get the food!

We have both now separately replaced them with seeded fat balls!

Oh god don’t go there! I just watched The Nun 2 last night

😂

mummymayhem18 · 06/05/2024 11:44

Did you find out what it was?

Louise303 · 06/05/2024 11:46

Rats are so noisy they only seem to come out at night its getting somewhere so block gaps with wire wool. First time in two decades we have had one in the wall they got in through next door could not sleep all night. They are so big now one jumped on our bin out the back and the ring doorbell notification pinged.

Quacking4it · 06/05/2024 12:41

What was it!

flatironbuildin · 06/05/2024 12:44

I actually can't believe that an adult would just run upstairs when they have heard noises that suggest that an animal of some sort is in the kitchen. If it's that loud it's obviously not a rat and the the potential damage not to mention clean up job of leaving whatever it is - a cat or a squirrel just roving around is unbelievable.

If it was a rat or a mouse if you banged about a bit as you approached it would run off so there is no need to be that scared.

Even allowing for a rat phobia, given it almost certainly is not a rat, just running off is the most stupid thing to do.

I doubt that very much. If I ever came face to face with a rat I'd have hysterics and pass out, my daughter had one in her garden and I ran into the lounge shaking and crying, I hadn't even seen it, she just said there's a rat ou there. When we had a mouse in the kitchen, I sat on the stairs outside our flat until my husband came home.

Lwrenn · 06/05/2024 12:48

I had mice once and one prick was so noisy it should have been issued an asbo for noise pollution. Hope @Kidulthood2027 you're alright now 💐

What about if it was a snake lol

Oldermum84 · 06/05/2024 12:54

Why to god is there no update???!??!!!

ClockworkDisaster · 06/05/2024 13:00

OP has disappeared…. Maybe it was Godzilla???

MiddleClassProblem · 06/05/2024 13:02

Is it a clever promo for the new ghostbusters film?

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 06/05/2024 13:14

Round me, it would probably be a seagull, they are huge and utterly fearless. There's a local FB page dedicated to pictures of them nicking chips and ice cream cones out of the hands of unsuspecting tourists at the beach.

Us locals know better and take our chips home to eat once all doors and windows are locked! Grin

So funny reminds me of the YouTube prank to a pest control company regarding noisy pigeons.

Knitgoodwoman · 06/05/2024 13:36

Here to find out if the Op got dragged off by a rat/ghost/a rat-ghost or a mutant cat...

furryblanky · 06/05/2024 13:45

A ghost, a ghost of a rat ?
