Noises in kitchen, absolutely shitting myself

First of all, I have a huge phobia of rats. To the point I can’t function if there is one nearby. I have fainted before when seeing one as a teenager.

anyway, partner is currently out with a mate and won’t be home for a few hours. I cooked my dinner and left his portion on the kitchen counter next to microwave for him to warm up when he gets in, as I’ll likely have gone to bed by then. Went back into living room and put TV on not thinking anything of it, door to kitchen slightly ajar. I can now hear rustling noises. Really weird, the dryer and washer aren’t on and I can’t think of anything else that would explain the noise. It’s really loud though, like something has taken food from the plate and is dragging it along the kitchen floor/kitchen counter, I’m genuinely terrified and physically can’t move from the sofa to go and look. The kitchen counters are raised a few inches from the floor so would be easy for rats to be under there. I’m really frightened so please talk to me until partner gets home as I genuinely am stuck to the sofa with fear.

Any update op?

MiddleClassProblem · 06/05/2024 08:33

I’m hoping it was a cat 🤞🏽

x2boys · 06/05/2024 08:33

It's half eight on a bank holiday let the Op have a lie in and stop begging for updates.

3luckystars · 06/05/2024 08:34

It was a burglar and they ate the salmon before burgling.

Zonder · 06/05/2024 08:35

So what was it?

butterflywingss · 06/05/2024 08:37

Quite invested to find out what it was

Coffeegincarbs · 06/05/2024 08:41

If you've left the window open or have a catflap it's probably my cat stealing your dinner! He proudly came home with a cooked sausage the other day (someone missed their supper!)

JosiePosey · 06/05/2024 08:52

It must have been a rat king that has eaten the op 😬

One of my mighty hunters came home with a sausage roll twice in one week 😂 he then chased it around the living room, it was absolute carnage - flakey pastry everywhere!

Anyway, I reckon there was a cat in the kitchen but it was gone by the time OP's fella got home, so nobody will ever know. Unless of course it really was a rat, in which case it's made itself at home behind a kitchen cupboard and will go unnoticed until the next time it starts noisily juggling potato wedges on the counter.

😧!

You have hero status in my eyes!!

I caught the last one in a fishing net I keep for the purpose....it works for rats and birds and that thing hissed at me and leapt high in the air once we were outside and legged it. I never knew rats could jump so high.
But to be fair DS kept pet rats for years, they were quite cute once you got used to the tails, so I don't feel that horror when I see one.

BlowDryRat · 06/05/2024 09:20

We used to have cats inviting themselves in at every opportunity when we had hamsters. One in particular was fascinated by them and used to sit in front of their cage just watching. It gave me a huge fright when it sprinted across my feet as I walked into the kitchen in the dark. NDN's cat would definitely eat anything as tasty as left-out salmon.

Rats are apparently harmless (similar to squirrels) if they’re in gardens. In my DM’s house they lived under the shed (which got moved) and they were quite sweet watching them get birdseed in the snow. We used to have a huge problem as kids as the local dump was in the next street and our cat would catch them from there and the churchyard (now both locations gone).

I’ve never seen one in my garden but a few doors down saw one snaking along outside (didn’t tell neighbours).

Once, years ago I was in my childhood house as a teenager. We had loads of people to stay so I ended up in a front room downstairs on a sofa bed as I think I gave up my room. Anyway, heard this loud crunching in the middle of the night, froze, couldn’t get up.

We had cats and discovered it was mice, the mice were eating the Iams. For years though and probably even now one cat would come downstairs past cupboard under stairs and really sniff there (I swear mice were in there). That’s the problem
with Victorian houses though, perfect for rodents to hide in.

It’s the tails on rats which get me too, nasty ropey things.

When Harrods had its pet department with live pets I saw a pet rat there once and shuddered at its tail, poor thing hid, probably realised no one wanted it!

CrunchyCarrot · 06/05/2024 10:24

Hmm perhaps OP is in a ratty hostage type situation barracaded in her room, having fled upstairs previously forgetting her phone!

Bubblybits · 06/05/2024 10:31

I know it’s a bank holiday OP, but please wake up and update us 😂

MorningSunshineSparkles · 06/05/2024 10:32

Plot twist, OP was eaten by the rat/cat and OPs DP came home to find a gruesome mess left to clean.

GingerPirate · 06/05/2024 10:38

Sorry about the way you feel!
I'm not smug here, however, I find rats and mice quite cute.
Different feeling though, when a huge fluffy spider decided to walkabout and look for love one night, we were redecorating and some brown paper was left on the floor!
Could hear every step! 😭

He’s had mice before i moved in but this is a really loud noise and I can’t see it being anything other than a big fuck off rat

It probably is a rat
I had one come in during Lockdown, that hot summer when homes were invaded by them as all the restaurants were closed

It was rustling that alerted me- I found a cache of cherry stones under the sofa

I used a poison, sadly and rat was no more.

These days I have a Verminator (Whippet) who keeps rats at bay!

tillytoodles1 · 06/05/2024 10:41

OP, where are you?

SadSandwich · 06/05/2024 10:46

Was it a rat? Next doors cat? Come on OP we need to know what is was that ate the salmon and wedges. Did your not so tipsy bf solve the case? Or are you both still upstairs held hostage by the thing in the kitchen. We neeeeeeeeeed to know.

Wafflesandcrepes · 06/05/2024 10:51

We had a tiny little mouse going through our Advent calendar and ruffling through wrapping paper. It made such a noise that it woke me up upstairs. Here’s hoping it wasn’t a rat!
