Vegan wedding

Would it be asshole-ish of me to smuggle babybels in my handbag?

The menu looks very tiny, and I don't intend to eat it in front of anyone, just find a dark corner. It's the only meal at the whole event.

I did think of peperami but it's vile and stinky.

I'm a meat eater but my neice and her now husband had a vegan menu at their wedding - it was delicious! Gorgeous Canapés and then an Italian three course (third course being home made cakes)
I never even thought to take my own food.
I asked the chef for her recipes!

SwingTheMonkey · 05/05/2024 17:32

You can take whatever snack you want? As long as you take yourself off somewhere to eat it if it’s not vegan.

The idea that because you’re invited to a vegan wedding you must only eat vegan foods while you’re there, or you’d be insulting your hosts, is weird and pathetic.

ETA I’m not a vegan but wouldn’t mind a vegan wedding breakfast at all. But if I fancied taking something non vegan as a snack - if I felt I’d need a snack, I would - I just wouldn’t eat it anywhere near other guests.

Alwaysalwayscold · 05/05/2024 17:36

They're choosing to provide a vegan meal, but they can't dictate what people choose to eat outside of that meal.

muggart · 05/05/2024 17:38

It's fine to take snacks whenever you go and it's fine for those snacks to be food you want to eat.

I bring food everywhere with me in case I get hungry. I hate having my access to food in someone else's control.

That said, I'm a bit surprised that you think the menu is tiny. What does that even mean?

Pudmyboy · 05/05/2024 17:16

Overreacting much??

I don't think I am.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 05/05/2024 17:41

I'm not sure how a menu can look tiny unless it specifies portion sizes e.g a 2 inch square slice of (vegan) pastry topped with one cube of butternut squash and a quarter of a sage leaf, accompanied by one jersey royal and two fine green.

Am I the only one thinking that what is really strange in this is the notion of taking snacks to a wedding? I just can't say I've ever seen anyone whip a snack out of their handbag. I agree that sometimes there is a wait for food but I'd feel really awkward, getting out a snack. Isn't it offensive to the host? You're almost saying 'I knew you wouldn't feed me enough so I brought my own.' I'd just eat a meal before going. Or maybe just buy some nuts or something from the bar.

why would anyone need to eat anything outside of the provided meals?

@muggart

why? It’s not gonna kill you to feel hungry

bloodyplumbing · 05/05/2024 17:54

@LuckySantangelo35 being hungry won't kill, but what's the issue with people not wanting to feel hungry?

Take snacks a bad enjoy, you don't have to share my snacks.

Maraa · 05/05/2024 17:57

I went to a vegan wedding. Not my thing at all but we went Pizza Hut buffet beforr the ceremony, tried abit of the vegan food, then food on the way home. I survived

BreatheAndFocus · 05/05/2024 18:01

Seriously? The thought of a vegan meal is so shocking you’ll have to fill up on a Babybel? Crap! This is just another ‘let’s poke fun at vegans’ thread!

I’m not vegan but I went to a big family party (about 60 people there, from toddlers to people in their 90s) and the food was not only absolutely fine, it was delicious - and filling. They’d got caterers in and all the food was lush. There was nothing weird, nothing processed - just a buffet but all vegan. It was actually very interesting, picking items to eat. There were vol au vents and recognisable things (but vegan) and lots of tasty new things. Every plate was labelled too. Loads of people went back for seconds. It genuinely was really nice.

So keep an open mind and your fingers crossed that they’ve got a caterer of the same quality 🥦 🍅 🫑 🥑 🍚 🌽 🍝

Not a great idea to start drinking alcohol on an empty stomach. If people have been travelling they might not have had time for lunch and there could be drinks provided long before the meal. Also, anybody who's pregnant or diabetic might have a particular need to eat before the meal.

pinkyredrose · 05/05/2024 18:04

YABU for considering babybell, at least sneak a donut in!

Presumably because they don't like the meal that's on offer.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 05/05/2024 15:34

Especially as the groom has now decided to no longer be vegan.

This comment just makes
you seem a twat

They are not inflicting anything on you. They are inviting you to their wedding!

If you dont like it dont go

O was invited to a vegan wedding. I dont eat processed foods and while everything was delicious there was a lot of processed stuff i ate it all as i was very grateful to be invited

DrCoconut · 05/05/2024 18:07

A lot of people assume a meal has to contain meat to be filling. It's very strange, I haven't starved in almost 30 years not eating it.

I'm vegan and wouldn't care at all if you did this. I hate being hungry at events and having nowhere to get food so a snack in the bag is a great idea. I often don't get well catered for so have done this many times (or filled up before I go out...)

They need to suck it up!

no one needs to eat meat every single meal

Hugosmaid · 05/05/2024 18:14

Depends how long you’re there for OP. One meal isn’t a lot of your expected to spend the entire day and night there. The vegan meal is most likely going to be very nice.

However at the age of 45 no one’s belief system is going to stop ‘me’ from putting what ever food I want in my mouth. It’s the bizarrest new culture we are in where we must follow every everyone’s whim incase we upset their ‘belief system’

if I’m at a vegan wedding then I’d eat the vegan meal - they are usually very nice - but no one is going to police what I eat for the rest of them night.

The problem is vegans can be extremists so I’d really consider the amount of time you spend there.

Service
meal
couple of drinks
Then escape!

Neither have I starved eating meat for 30 years.

Londonrach1 · 05/05/2024 18:19

Depends what's on the menu...saying that have not understood why the scones are so bad at national trust I've seen learnt they vegan so no butter. Understand veggie and tbh can be very nice but vegan is very hard. I eat a varied diet of all the food groups and happy to eat veggie but vegan...never had a good cake or anything...even a jacket potato..no butter and no cheese....proper tasty cheese ... I'm with you op but not a babybel you need better cheese than that and some proper butter.

thats a bit different isn’t it

can you think why?

DilemmaDelilah · 05/05/2024 18:20

I wouldn't smuggle anything in - but I would make sure I had something before I go in, and something to have afterwards. It's not to do with the food being vegan, as much as me being a fussy eater and worried that there won't be anything I like to eat. It's much the same with most catered events, but I am more likely to find something I like if it's not vegan.
