The past election/PM changes have been horrendous. The visceral disappointment was awful each time.

I can’t wait to actually celebrate this year. I know, I know, Labour are going to set fire to the economy and tax everyone £3mil each and it’ll cost you 4 trillion a month to send you kid to private school, and all women will perish immediately because only Tories know what a woman is Hmm

But finally! It’s been a long fucking time coming.

I don't disagree.

This won't be done under the tories who have made inequality far worse than could ever have been imagined.

Well it won't be done under Labour either. It will require cash and we ain't got none.

EasternStandard · 05/05/2024 10:38

Another76543 · 05/05/2024 10:31

This is a lot of the problem. There’s too much inequality in the state system. Some people really don’t have a choice of a great state school. We need to fix the education system; from the bottom up, not top down.

Well VAT will drive that discrepancy as house prices go up more near top state / grammar

User2460177 · 05/05/2024 10:38

Another76543 · 05/05/2024 10:21

Exactly this. An ever decreasing number of net tax contributors is not sustainable. I haven’t seen a single thing from any party about how we are going to improve things and, more importantly, how that is going to be funded.

Absolutely - this is something both parties have to face so this idea that the Tories are just evil and that explains the decline in public services is just silly. It’s difficult to really understand much difference between the parties and Labour’s policies on women’s rights mean I won’t vote for them. I’ve never voted Tory tho so I will need to see what else is available locally.

When you're in a hole though you stop digging.

The tories have had their chance.

This is true- VAT could well increase pressure on school’s overall, it’s not going to raise significant revenue. It will certainly increase pressure on well performing schools.

gertrudeteacake · 05/05/2024 10:41

My gut feeling is it won't be quite the landslide that everyone's expecting. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with a hung parliament.

I do agree that if it had been a labour chancellor giving so much money away in furlough and bounce back loans and ' eat out to help out' schemes during the pandemic and all the rest of it , the right would have been in uproar
If it hadn't been for years of austerity and the NHs had been properly funded years prior to 2020 , maybe they wouldn't have had to lockdown for as long.
Boris Johnson wrote a piece for the Telegraph a week before lockdown saying pretty much the same things about why we would need to lockdown , but I can't do links to back this up.
Other countries also had lockdowns too. On mumsnet you'd think it was only the UK who did this.
Not that I believe that that the LP may have handled the pandemic any better or worse , but it's strange how the money lost to these various schemes has been written off and not much claimed back. Some company owners were surprised how easy it was to claim. An lbc phone in about this was an eye opener.
( I know a few people who did quite well out the government over lockdown too)

I’d be astonished. Have you seen the electoral carnage in the last couple of days?

@Usernamechange1234 yes. But only I can advocate for my children now. Not in the hope that in 5 years time things might be better under labour (who have said very little about Sen provision).

Aspirations for children with Sen are often so low. Especially when they are academically very able, but with dyslexia/ASD in the mix.

As a SEND teacher I find your second paragraph really offensive.

Lucky for you you can afford private eh?

Not in some areas it won't because catchment isn't the priority.

I can also see a hung parliament on the cards too this GE.

House prices are impacted near top grammar / state here. I mostly know the SE though

It's a cliche but the definition of insanity is repeating the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. Einstein I believe.

The tories have destroyed the country. Its utter madness to consider voting for them. Turkeys voting for Christmas.

Anuggetofpurestgreen · 05/05/2024 10:50

I think Labour landslide. Not because people want to vote for them. They just don't want to vote for the Conservatives.

The Conservative ls have been in power too long and have gone through Brexit and Covid. They have run out of ideas, are worn out, no optimisim or dynamism. The pendulum will swing the other way to the left as is natural in the general scheme of things. So we will have a Labour government. Nothing much will change. Unless as I suspect Kier (Corbyns man) is the real deal on the red front. Then we are in for a sh*show. But nothing much to do about it as we probably can't have another Conservative term of government.

One argument on this thread is that private school parents will simply buy property close to the best state schools, therefore displacing other families.

I'm saying that action would be pointless in some areas as catchment/distance is not the priority on eligibility.

Yes other countries had lockdowns too I agree. Our furlough scheme and business support was incredibly generous by international standards. Other countries are also in the crapper economically speaking - look at Germany (the economic powerhouse of the EU) and other EU countries. We are living in the decline of the West. It's happening everywhere. I am sceptical Labour can save the day and uninspired by them all.

Had to. Corbyns membership was untenable and would lose Sir Keir votes. He is nothing if not practical on the self-preservation front. But he supported Jeremy as the next PM and .many people won't forget that. But not enough to lose Labour the next election.

Anyway, what I meant was, he believes the same as Corbyn does. He's just more presentable.

It’s always distance here. For most people bar some supported exceptions

Grammar has selection but that will be hotly contested by families with extra funds

What criteria are you using where you are?

Also, I do not see these results as hugely successful for Labour - turnout was woeful, and I think the apathy towards both parties is palpable. Current polls suggest Starmer won’t get a majority to govern. Harking back to the glory days of 1997 is misplaced optimism at best.

Which polls are you looking at?

Yes agree with this. Labour Landslide bordering on elected dictatorship likely to be the outcome (ie the size of the majority is so big that they can do anything unchallenged as there is no meaningful opposition). That is not healthy.
