To finally be looking forward to a GE?

The past election/PM changes have been horrendous. The visceral disappointment was awful each time.

I can’t wait to actually celebrate this year. I know, I know, Labour are going to set fire to the economy and tax everyone £3mil each and it’ll cost you 4 trillion a month to send you kid to private school, and all women will perish immediately because only Tories know what a woman is Hmm

But finally! It’s been a long fucking time coming.

Hmmmm...I'm.not sure whether that works for MPs. Are you suggesting there might be one rule for Labour MPs one rule for everyone else? It's a little Animal Farm for me but if you agree with the approach then good for you.

What rule? There are no rules for private health or private education. There is a huge difference between someone who believes that excellent healthcare, and excellent education, should be available for all, and is prepared to work and fight for it- whilst not accepting that your child is disadvantaged currently because the other side has run it down for so long.

Or someone who chooses to go the private route out of sheer privilege and couldn't give a damn about what happens to state edu and the majority of children.

I'd have thought it would be very clear to see. Which mother would sacrifice the chances of their child for their principles? Especially if they are prepared to do everything in their power to improve state edu for all.

The standards set for Diane Abbott are so much higher than those set for anyone else. In all honesty I do think it was a bit hypocritical of her to send her son where she did, even if he did pick it. However, that doesn't wipe out everything else she has done and achieved in her career imo, and nor does it have anything whatsoever to do with Labour's VAT policy - she doesn't even have the whip now, as someone has already pointed out.

The moron comment is unforgivable though. She isn't that and there is no reason to say she is. As far as I can see it all comes from when she got some figures about police recruitment wrong during an election campaign. This interview is brought up again and again, yet Priti Patel did a whole interview as home secretary in which she muddled up terrorism and counter terrorism and that is never mentioned. Never. Maybe it was a slip of the tongue, but she did it repeatedly and was literally in charge of homeland security at the time yet is her name synonymous for idiocy now and brought up whenever the prospect or reality of Tory rule is mentioned? No. It's forgotten.

Is this what you mean @Anuggetofpurestgreen ?

From the link in pp

‘In October 1984, two weeks after an IRA bomb killed five at the Tory Party conference in Brighton, Corbyn invited convicted IRA volunteers Linda Quigley and Gerry MacLochlainn to the House of Commons. It caused uproar at the time.’

I've got a link to an article in the Spectator which neatly sums up how appalling JCs actions were. Annoyingly its behind a pay wall. Is it acceptable to screenshot it? I'm not sure how I do it. I'm not trying to evade the question by the way as its obviously very well known.

I was very nearly blown up by the IRA as a child. I think inviting convicted IRA terrorists to the Commons where Conservative MPs were their targets in Brighton 2 weeks before is not the actions of a good man. I'm sorry. We can try and twist the story to make it sound less than it was but essentially it's still a bad act.

I’m very glad the U.K. voted against him so comprehensively.

The ‘friends with Hamas’ statement falls into the same category.

Is now a good time to mention the Minister who didn't know that Dover was important?
Or the one who thinks that misogyny is bad whether it is against men or women?
There was a minister on the radio today who seemed unaware of Scotland

Are they all morons too?

Was it also a bad act for members of the British government to authorise talks with the IRA in the 1980s?

Yes spot on. So I think we are all in agreement that private school is a perfectly reasonable and moral option. I

Dunno. If they were official and not the unauthorised actions of a backbencher I suppose it was good. Not the same thing as Jezzas actions. As the Spectator said, its a bit like inviting members of the National Front for tea just after the murder of Jo Cox. It would be awful.

JessS1990 · 06/05/2024 20:35

I take it that the sudden and dramatic reappearance of But Jeremy Corbyn are an acknowledgement that Keir's Beer, knowing what a woman is and they are all the same, have failed and so we are back to an old favourite.

The local elections really are the gift that keeps on giving.

Idk the pp linked an article and you seem to be talking about him a fair bit.

It hasn't been taxed because up until Brexit it was illegal to tax education. Cos you know education benefits the whole of society etc.

Nah, I'm sure you know that's codswallop. Nobody is trying to "tax education". That would be a whole different thing.

DuncinToffee · 06/05/2024 20:38

It's good to see 'But Corbyn' making an appearance again

EasternStandard · 06/05/2024 20:39

Maybe it’s the same as pp one gets to talk about Corbyn if your child asks you to, or it’s in a book by Nadine

It was someone who was a great admirer of Diane that raised the issue really. Not intentional. It's too much of a depressing blast from the past. We will be discussing Momentum next.

Clearly the British government doesn't have a policy not to negotiate with terrorists, else there would have been no way to bring the Troubles to an end.

I can't explain why But Jeremy Corbyn seems to upset some Tories so much, but he continues to manage to, it really is a talent he has.

Wtaf. VAT is a tax on 1 form of education.
The only reason they can do it is because of Brexit ie it is illegal in the EU.

This is not what I am saying. It would be, if only State edu was excellent too.

In fact, in countries where State Edu is funded properly, with great facilities and staff, decent size classes- most people do not choose private schools. Why would you, if the State system is brilliant. Same for health care.

One of my sons works in Switzerland and his business pays for Private Education. There are practically no local kids, only expats. Because local schools are excellent.

I suggest you start a campaign to rejoin the EU, I am sure that all the very many people who are outraged by tax on private school fees will join you, although Jacob Rees Mogg will probably be a bit confused.

Well it will certainly be a barrier to re-aligning ourselves with the EU.
