The past election/PM changes have been horrendous. The visceral disappointment was awful each time.

I can’t wait to actually celebrate this year. I know, I know, Labour are going to set fire to the economy and tax everyone £3mil each and it’ll cost you 4 trillion a month to send you kid to private school, and all women will perish immediately because only Tories know what a woman is Hmm

But finally! It’s been a long fucking time coming.

Are you suggesting there might be one rule for Labour MPs one rule for everyone else?

That seems to be what you’re suggesting. I’m a huge supporter of the NHS and strongly believe all healthcare should be free. However, faced with a two year wait for surgery and the prospect of going blind, I paid. You seem to think that would be OK but not if I was a Labour MP.

Not sure I said that? I think anyone who campaigns actively for the abolition of private schools or who thinks they are morally wrong and then sends their kids by choice to one is a hypocrite. I appreciate there are little arguments constructed by people on the left to try and excuse or explain it but personally I think it doesn't wash. Do what you believe in, vote according to your morals etc. Remember...private school is a luxury according to many on this thread and not a necessity. So there's no reason at all why a Labour MP needs to put their kids in one, surely?

BIossomtoes · 06/05/2024 19:54

It appears that Abbott did what decent parents do and listened to her son:

However, James added: "Mum didn't force me to go to private school. I took the tests of the schools I wanted to go to and I chose the school I wanted to go to. If I wanted to go to a state school, my mum would have let me go to a state school."

Gosh thats so interesting. Did she really try and argue it like that? Terrible privilege there. Accident of birth. Buying his way in life. Massive unfairness wouldn't you think?

I mean, I got the impression you thought that about private school parents? I think maybe I got it wrong and you support them? Who knows..its late.

Hypocrisy but ok if the child asks for it then it doesn’t count or something 🤔

Yet we are vilified on here for doing the same thing! Double standards. When a Labour politicians does it then that's just being a caring parent, when anyone else sends their DC private they are a privileged Tory and part of the elite.

Zonder · 06/05/2024 20:00

I personally don't care if people want to send their kids to private school. That's their right. I do care that it hasn't been taxed fairly for so long.

Absolute hypocrisy but seemingly it's OK as long as you are a Labour supporter.

It hasn't been taxed because up until Brexit it was illegal to tax education. Cos you know education benefits the whole of society etc.

No they only allow Labour supporters/MPs to do that. If anyone does it then they are overly privileged Tories who don't care about anyone but themselves and need to be brought down a peg or 2.

Only Labour supporters have dc who can ask to go apparently. It’s a strange one

No idea how they get so convoluted, maybe they're joking

Jezza also invited the IRA to the Commons for tea just after they bombed the Brighton Pavillion killing MPs. That's a fact

I am no Corbyn fan, but he was ahead of the curve there.

ETA:Although I think saying he met the IRA is slightly distorting things.

Some of these facts, do seem to have a habit of being incorrect. Perhaps @Anuggetofpurestgreen it would be a good idea to ask MNHQ to delete your post?

Go for it! I don't mind.

And its entirely true by the way. He did invite members of the IRA (convicted terrorists) to the Commons after the Brighton bombing. I know it's a shameful thing to do but there's not much by way of an excuse in my opinion. Nice try though. Shut down people who say things that you don't agree with by telling on them.

You didn’t do the same. Apparently you saved up for eight years, I doubt your child/ren were given a choice, were they? Did you ask them or ever even consider state schooling?

Yes we did thanks. Does that now make it acceptable? If I say no we didn't does that make it unacceptable?
You are saying that private education is only acceptable if a child chooses it? Wow, have you told Starmer this cos maybe they could then exempt any such child, who actively wants to to go to a private school, from VAT?

BIossomtoes · 06/05/2024 20:16

Yes. By age 4 @twistyizzy you should make sure your child is fully clued up about the ethics and morals of state v private eduction in order that she may decide whether or not you will make the biggest financial investment in her that you may ever make. Seems perfectly sane approach.

Is this what you mean @Anuggetofpurestgreen ?

From the link in pp

‘In October 1984, two weeks after an IRA bomb killed five at the Tory Party conference in Brighton, Corbyn invited convicted IRA volunteers Linda Quigley and Gerry MacLochlainn to the House of Commons. It caused uproar at the time.’

I’m not saying that at all, as you very well know. It was a response to the accusation upthread of Abbott being a hypocrite because she chose a private school for her son. When she didn’t choose it at all, he did. None of this has anything to do with you and your choices.
