The past election/PM changes have been horrendous. The visceral disappointment was awful each time.

I can’t wait to actually celebrate this year. I know, I know, Labour are going to set fire to the economy and tax everyone £3mil each and it’ll cost you 4 trillion a month to send you kid to private school, and all women will perish immediately because only Tories know what a woman is Hmm

But finally! It’s been a long fucking time coming.

Oh dear, you really are just trying to wind people up without sticking to facts. Probably best if we take your posts with the pinch of salt and they deserve.

Oh hello its you again @Zonder ! Popping up again in your fun way!

I would never be so foolish as to ssume that anyone on mumsnet is always/ever correct. For example, Ive never assumed youve ever said anything true on here (no offence obviously). To assume makes an ass out of you and me.

Obviously I don't assume everyone is correct on MN. I do prefer to engage with people who at least make an effort to stick to facts in debate. It's just not really worth engaging with people who invent stories for debate. We are seeing more and more of it as the Tories get more edgy.

She is 71? not got the whip, she wont be in any position of High Office but is she stands again, she'll be elected so must be doing something right?

What has she done that deserves so much criticism?

I think we know the answer to that.

Totally agree with this - I’ve chosen to bow out of the UK all together rather than live under the current shitshow and what I suspect will be an even bigger one under Starmer. I don’t mind paying tax and paying more if I can see any benefit. I’ve no faith in Labour whatsoever and was reluctant to continue pouring tax into a failing system.

where did you go?

we pay the top rate of tax and I have to say that given the general direction things are going / not just the VAT but the absolutely scathing attitude towards the rich and any sort of progression/social mobility, we are considering a move. Hard to know where to go but the NHS is in the toliet, we have one of the highest rates of unemployment and two main opposition parties who think women can have penises.

I don’t begrudge paying more because we are fortunate, but I begrudge the attitude and resentment of people. It’s also nuts how a poster on this thread has been picked on for voting in keeping with what’s right for her family.

It’s completely reasonable to dislike Diane Abbott. She’s a moron.

And also you seem to quite often be engaging with me (uninvited I might add) so either you think I'm sticking to the facts or you are telling fibs...

I couldn't care less who is in power, they are all the same. I will vote for whichever party keeps the VAT off education.

I'll vote for those that put it on. As would my many friends. I know no one out of 100s of people with a child in private school. I know about 50 families living on the bread line in poverty.

You were politely responding? Hmm!

All of which Im afraid are enturely factual or my own feelings,

This is my point - either entirely factual or your own feelings. Your feelings aren't fact!

The rest of your post is just downright rude, and still fact free.

Do people actually believe that the VAT is going to make a difference? Honestly? It just smacks of a chance to drag people down I don’t think it’s going to help anywhere near as much as people seem to think/pretend to think.

"My views were either factual or my own feelings". Let me have a quick run through.

I said I find her patronising. That's a subjective feeling.

I also said I find her hypocritical for sending her child to private school. That she's a hypocrite is opinion. Her son went to private school is fact.

Jeremy Corbyn called Hamas "friends". That is a fact. Jezza also invited the IRA to the Commons for tea just after they bombed the Brighton Pavillion killing MPs. That's a fact.

Goodness me @Zonder . Its not rocket science. I'm not writing in code or anything!

Zonder · 06/05/2024 19:16

Ah mismatched shoes. That well known measure of whether someone is a moron.

fungipie · 06/05/2024 19:17

Pin0cchio · 04/05/2024 22:16

I should add - my personal immediate family are in the small bucket of well off people who've done bloody well out of years of conservative governments (we are in the 1%).

Its not what i want for this country. People like me need to give a bit, pay in a bit more. I want to do that, for my kids, for their teachers, i wish people would stop assuming people on higher incomes will do anything to avoid paying a fair share, its not how I or many others feel.

Thanks, I was about to write the same. Nothing wrong wit being successful, rich even, whatever that is. As long as you are prepared to pay your share to the social contract and those who are less well off, for many many reasons.

Your fact about the IRA killing MPs in the Brighton bombing is wrong in two quite important details. 1) it was the Grand Hotel Brighton that was bombed, not the Pavillion. 2) Only one MP was killed.

Facts hey!

I mean it’s a great meme for a reason.

obviously any one of her interviews makes it clear but the mismatched shoes are a visual representation of how she presents herself.

plus, literally everything @Anuggetofpurestgreen said.

it loses a people a lof of credibility when they defend this type of shit. Honestly. It’s literally the same as saying Boris isn’t a moron.

some of the politicians are inexcusable. Across both parties. Refusing to acknowledge this makes people look pigheaded at best.

Yes but to read the posters on this thread and the way they want to gleefully add the VAT etc and attitudes towards the rich, I don’t think that’s how they feel at all.

and for the record, most in my family and friends went to private schools, and now their children and grandchildren do. These schools are NOT charities- apart for a few scholarships, and should pay VAT.

fungipie · 06/05/2024 19:30

Anuggetofpurestgreen · 06/05/2024 17:28

She may be all those things. I think she's also a hypocrite and not fit for high office. Labour MPs can be criticised as well as Conservative MPs. I don't want to argue with you about it though.

Why is she a hypocrite?

If the NHS is dire and your child needs an operation- is it wrong to say 'the NHS should be great and serve all, and I shall fight for this all my life' - but in the meantime my child needs this operation, so I shall go private. Because my child should not be the victim of my beliefs and principles.

Hmmmm...I'm.not sure whether that works for MPs. Are you suggesting there might be one rule for Labour MPs one rule for everyone else? It's a little Animal Farm for me but if you agree with the approach then good for you.

Yep, the vitriol against anyone who dares to have more money than anyone else or prioritises education rather than buying a house etc.
The assumption that anyone who dares to criticise Labour must automatically be a Tory , heartless and privileged. This is the insult that has been levied against many of us on this post merely because we are critiquing various policies.

I am all for increasing funding for state sector but it should be well thought out which the VAT is not. It is merely a vote winner for the militant left of the party. If Labour were honestly serious about improving state education then they would commit to properly fund it through income tax rise. They aren't committing to level up the funding between North or South as just 1 example.
I am morally against the taxation of education because all society benefits from a well educated population. I will do what is right for my child now and I won't sacrifice her education for some moral crusade. I would judge any parent who would do so to be honest.

BIossomtoes · 06/05/2024 19:37

Are you suggesting there might be one rule for Labour MPs one rule for everyone else?

That seems to be what you’re suggesting. I’m a huge supporter of the NHS and strongly believe all healthcare should be free. However, faced with a two year wait for surgery and the prospect of going blind, I paid. You seem to think that would be OK but not if I was a Labour MP.

IClaudine · 06/05/2024 19:39

I am no Corbyn fan, but he was ahead of the curve there.

ETA:Although I think saying he met the IRA is slightly distorting things.
