The past election/PM changes have been horrendous. The visceral disappointment was awful each time.

I can’t wait to actually celebrate this year. I know, I know, Labour are going to set fire to the economy and tax everyone £3mil each and it’ll cost you 4 trillion a month to send you kid to private school, and all women will perish immediately because only Tories know what a woman is Hmm

But finally! It’s been a long fucking time coming.

No less than 20 of our Prime Ministers have been educated at Eton. Do you think their private education was just ‘a tiny element’ of that? It’s part of a much wider context of privilege, of course.

The three men responsible for the current state of the country went to Eton. If a single state school had been responsible for producing 3 contemporaneous boys who inflicted so much damage to the UK and caused so many British deaths it would be closed down!

I don’t know why Labour voters are so desperate to protect how depressingly shit Labour are. We know the tories are shit. Fine. Labour will win the election, almost certainly. I’m not sure why Labour supporters are so unable to constructively criticise their own party. It’s bizarre. It’d be called lack of self awareness in a person, but in the case of a political party I’m not sure. Group Think? Who knows.

stripycats · 05/05/2024 23:37

How about when the Tory home secretary incited far right groups to cause violence on our streets due to her use of language? That was a good one wasn't it? Or when the current home secretary referred to someone's constituency as a 'shithole' but excused himself by saying he'd actually said the other MP himself was 'shit'? I mean I really wouldn't bring up language use or morality to support the Tories?

IClaudine · 05/05/2024 23:42

Labour are not in power, so right now we don't know how shit or otherwise they will be.

I think it’s a case of having to accept that they’re probably the best of a bad bunch and we’ve got to have someone in power, so some people won’t criticise them.

A bit like the Royals. Anne gets lots of praise because she seems to do more than the rest of them. They all get a bit of praise because at least they’re not Andrew. In actual fact they’re all a bit crap.

I think people are understandably desperate for things to improve, and if they admitted that Labour aren’t that great, it would be really depressing. Because if they can’t save us, what then?

TooBigForMyBoots · 05/05/2024 23:46

She wasn't wrong. Most of the country agree with her. I agree with her.*

@DuncinToffee Nah you did not because politicians are politicians and I do not waste my time obsessing about political parties. However, I dislike when people try to shut you up with the Trump thing as you did.

I asked if you prefered Trump over Biden, hiw does that shut down conversation?

Plenty of Tory MPs support Trump openly

The op said ‘my European citizenship has gone’ - not sure what that means.

Here's what it means:

https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-9157/#:~:text=British%20citizens%27%20EU%20citizenship%20and,State%20without%20needing%20a%20visa.

British citizens’ EU citizenship and free movement rights ended when the Brexit transition period expired on 31 December 2020. Those rights had enabled them to visit, live, work or study in an EU Member State without needing a visa.

NewStartNowish · 06/05/2024 06:39

I will never vote Tory. Despite being advantaged economically by their policies.

But I am disappointed by the lacklustre Labour Party and also its views on Gaza etc.

I guess I will vote for another party. I don’t feel any of that 1997 euphoria and excitement. It will not be the same this time. The rest of the world is in a shitter place I feel than then.

NewStartNowish · 06/05/2024 06:43

I do get where the poster with SEN kids in private school is coming from. I don’t have kids in fee-paying schools. But if you have kids who are finally thriving in a good school and will be forced to take them out, it’s hard to look at the bigger picture and good of society.

Even if another party like Labour will eventually improve education, it won’t come soon enough for her kids, who could be massively affected by being uprooted now. Many parents will prioritise their own children in the moment and I do understand that.

Even though I think continued Tory rule would be horrendous for the country and want them out. I can’t judge a mum for putting her kids first like this.

People who go into politics are opening themselves up to being abused and regularly called "scum" by randoms. Some people think that's perfectly fine. The pay compared to US politicians is not really high enough to make a normal person think the job is nonetheless worthwhile. (I dont want to start discussing the merits or otherwise of their paylevels please as thats another issue). MPs do an important job making laws that affect the lives of us all and yet who on earth who is in any way normal would want to be an MP?? Sadly we get the politicians we deserve and that's why we are in this mess, being run by a load of mediocre people and for the first time I'm thinking of spoling my ballot paper and that really pisses me off.

Anuggetofpurestgreen · 06/05/2024 06:59

Oh and another thing . Why are so many politicians on the take? From both sides? Eg. Youre running for one of the highest offices in the land and youve been fiddling the tax on your houses!? Those sorts of people are just fundamentally dishonest and shouldn't be running the country and making our laws. If you're aiming to be a politician you need to be 100% honest. Otherwise this sort of disillusionment with the lot of them happens.

ComeAlongPeggy · 06/05/2024 06:59

@SherbsL both my children have academic and music scholarships at independent schools. If I was a low earner, I’m confident they’d be offered some bursary support too. SEN does not mean low achieving. SEN covers a wide range of children and abilities.

Sorry as the parent of a child with an EHCP in the state system I don’t.

Define SEN. It’s a massive spectrum. Also what have parents with kids in private education ever done for the vast majority of SEN kids in the state system? Not heard any empathy what so ever. Just an I’m all right Jack attitude which is what all parents of privately educated kids feel.

The vast, vast majority of parents with SEN kids can’t afford private education, a few more who should have thought and planned ahead will now be joining those ranks. If moving schools(which many kids manage to do within the state system )is going to be so damaging they shouldn’t have gambled on always being able to afford the luxury of private education in the first place.

At this present time my sympathy is reserved for the many many people on PIP currently in desp distress and worry.

I can feel sympathy for lots of different people at the same time. Of course the private school family has far more privilege than many.

But most people don’t budget for a 20% increase in the cost of stuff. I certainly don’t. From the SEN kids’ point of view, I can imagine some will be distressed by a school move like this. I feel sorry for them.

Why are you asking me to define SEN?

There is a sense of glee I have seen by some towards the idea of children being uprooted which does not seem very considerate.

I understand the policy. But I can still feel for some of the individual kids and parents affected. That’s all.

Odd post. Why should parents empathise with you if you don't empathise with them? Why require performative "empathy" in the first place. How does that help you? Everyone is responsible for their own lives and doing the best they can for their own kids

I’m with you. I don’t see what’s beneficial about moving the pp dc with SEN for her, her dc or anyone really. They’re happy, she’s paying and that space is left free in state

No glee re children moving schools but really don’t appreciate the over focus on it. Kids move schools all the time. Service children often do it yearly. They survive. If having to move schools is so important you budget and look ahead to any eventuality. It’s £250 a month.

Currently we have many children experiencing disruption to education due to crumbling concrete. Where is the empathy for these children?

Well she can pay a little
more. It was her choice to contribute to the huge inequalities private education brings.

No some parents won’t be able to pay more and they’ll move to state. Why so keen to disrupt other dc’ schooling?

It won’t help you in any way beyond a brief satisfaction at other dc moving

And it puts extra strain on the state system, what’s so great about that?
