To finally be looking forward to a GE?

The past election/PM changes have been horrendous. The visceral disappointment was awful each time.

I can’t wait to actually celebrate this year. I know, I know, Labour are going to set fire to the economy and tax everyone £3mil each and it’ll cost you 4 trillion a month to send you kid to private school, and all women will perish immediately because only Tories know what a woman is Hmm

But finally! It’s been a long fucking time coming.

Damn right

MotherofPearl · 04/05/2024 21:39

YANBU OP; I feel the same.

Labour have certainly got their work cut out for them after the GE, but I absolutely cannot wait to see the back of the ghastly government.

I'm actually such a loser that I'm genuinely excited for the GE night - planning to get in nice snacks and drinks and stay up all night getting immense enjoyment from seeing one Tory after another lose their seats. Grin

nutbrownhare15 · 04/05/2024 21:40

I remember 1997. It feels a bit like that. I think we will have 2-3 years of much better government where Labour does much good before it starts to become a bit more mediocre as is inevitable in government.

todayortomorrow · 04/05/2024 21:43

Yes! Completely agree, I'm actually excited about an election for the first time in a long long while

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 04/05/2024 21:44

Bring it on !!

Maybe we can finally turn this leaky ship around ❤️

JoJothegerbil · 04/05/2024 21:45

I wish Sunak would hurry up and name the date. I want to book the next day off work so I can stay up all night and toast the Tory losses.

Willyoujustbequiet · 04/05/2024 21:54

Totally agree OP.

I mean Labour will struggle but its only to be expected with the absolute disaster the tories have caused. Get the bastards out. Never again.

ComeAlongPeggy · 04/05/2024 21:55

I’m actually hoping the tories stay in. I know, I know. But I don’t think Starmer is a good leader. Don’t @ me.

Also, for very good reasons my children are in independent schools.

Actually I wouldn’t have voted Tory (Starmer or no Starmer) if the tax on independent schools hadn’t been proposed. But it will be a disaster for us as a family.

So yeah. This doesn’t feel like 1997 to me.

boys3 · 04/05/2024 21:56

It should be a nice early Christmas present. I think they’ll drag it out to near the bitter end though, and make us wait. Seven months before the celebrations can start I reckon.

I couldn't care less who is in power, they are all the same. I will vote for whichever party keeps the VAT off education.

BIWI · 04/05/2024 22:05

So all about you @ComeAlongPeggy How typical of Tory voters Hmm
What about the rest of society? People who have been suffering because of the imposition of austerity, back in 2008? The unnecessary cuts to public services because the Tories wouldn't put money into them? The (totally unnecessary) decline of the NHS?

But, hey, let's not worry about that - let's focus on your children instead. FFS.

Selfishness is the very lifeblood of the Conservatives.

Lavendersquare · 04/05/2024 22:07

@eise for the record there will be no Vat on education if Labour win, there will however be VAT on private school fees which feels right to 95% of the population that do not send their children to private schools.

There will also be closure to the loophole that allows the self employed or company owners to offset private school fees against their tax liability which again feels right and fair.

YeezyBreezy · 04/05/2024 22:09

The West Midlands are Labour again and I could not be happier 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Pin0cchio · 04/05/2024 22:13

I'd been slightly dodging committing getting out with local labour party and canvassing etc but for the first time in my life I'm thinking now is the moment.

My dad let me sit up (aged 12) when labour won in 1997 and i remember him almost being in tears, it felt like the start of a new time.

This feels like the beginning of a big shift, i feel excited.

ComeAlongPeggy · 04/05/2024 22:13

@BIWI I’ve never voted Tory before. Yes, I put my children first. We are not a wealthy family. I’m one of those parents who makes huge sacrifices to pay for schools that are the best fit for my children. Any significant increase will mean they’ll have to go to the (already massively oversubscribed) local schools. I’m not immune to austerity. I also don’t think it’s black and white and that tories are evil and labour are perfect.

Pussygaloregalapagos · 04/05/2024 22:15

Lib Dem’s also oppose the VAT on school fees. I am a floating voter historically. I actually think Rishi and Jeremy are a steady team. Both bright and hard working. They don’t have the backing of the party though. Conservatives are in a mess and time for them to take a break and regroup. Labour don’t look ready but the Conservatives have had their chance.

BIWI · 04/05/2024 22:16

I doubt very much that Labour are perfect - but the Tories (as manifest by this shower of shite) are evil.

But I stand by my post. You are voting purely selfishly. Which is what all Tories do. I truly hope that VAT is imposed on private education, as PE epitomises privilege, which is something most families cannot afford.

Pin0cchio · 04/05/2024 22:16

I should add - my personal immediate family are in the small bucket of well off people who've done bloody well out of years of conservative governments (we are in the 1%).

Its not what i want for this country. People like me need to give a bit, pay in a bit more. I want to do that, for my kids, for their teachers, i wish people would stop assuming people on higher incomes will do anything to avoid paying a fair share, its not how I or many others feel.

But your children’s education is not a charity, why should you be subbed for them? If you can barely afford it now how do you cope with the yearly increases?

VAT is a part of a working country. We all have to pay it in some shape or form, the fact that private schools have been getting away with this for so long is fucking criminal.

You do you.

The rest of us will spare a thought for the millions of children whose parents could sacrifice the rent, the food on the table and the shirt on their backs, and still never afford private school fees.

All our kids deserve better schools and that means government funding needs to rise.

ComeAlongPeggy · 04/05/2024 22:24

Ok @BIWI I’m voting for my children’s education. Yes. If that’s selfish, fine. I work within the NHS and my entire professional life has been dedicated to helping people. I see the mess we’re in.

I also have children with SEN who would not be thriving in state schools because the provision is paltry (I know, I visited almost every school in a 30 mile radius). Both hugely academic and supported well in independent schools. Both happy, confident children who will achieve their potential.

As a family we know how fortunate we are. But as an NHS professional, I am not wealthy.

Jfc, why wouldn't she focus on her children? You think anyone's putting the needs of some random in front of their own children? Grow up.

Curlewwoohoo · 04/05/2024 22:25

I'm really worried it'll be a flash in the pan though. Will they just be set up to fail?

Clingfilm · 04/05/2024 22:25

Me too, though I'm not getting my hopes up until I see the results roll in on election night, not after all the pollsters said Brexit wouldn't happen, once bitten twice shy!

After these latest election results I feel, as a pp said, there is a micro whiff of '97 in the air. Though we're all skint and pessimistic this time round 😂

ComeAlongPeggy · 04/05/2024 22:26

@Pin0cchio I agree that all schools should be properly funded. While that’s not the case, I choose schools that are funded well. I’m able to do that and I appreciate how fortunate I am to be in that position.
