To finally be looking forward to a GE?

The past election/PM changes have been horrendous. The visceral disappointment was awful each time.

I can’t wait to actually celebrate this year. I know, I know, Labour are going to set fire to the economy and tax everyone £3mil each and it’ll cost you 4 trillion a month to send you kid to private school, and all women will perish immediately because only Tories know what a woman is Hmm

But finally! It’s been a long fucking time coming.

@ComeAlongPeggy I know, it just makes me sad that so many people think like you.

ComeAlongPeggy · 04/05/2024 22:13

@BIWI I’ve never voted Tory before. Yes, I put my children first. We are not a wealthy family. I’m one of those parents who makes huge sacrifices to pay for schools that are the best fit for my children. Any significant increase will mean they’ll have to go to the (already massively oversubscribed) local schools. I’m not immune to austerity. I also don’t think it’s black and white and that tories are evil and labour are perfect.

I hope you have private healthcare then. I mean education is important but health takes priority surely.

Although tbf you'd be stuffed in an emergency either way.

GreenMagazine · 04/05/2024 22:54

@Another76543 don't worry, I'm not expecting anything very impressive. However, they do not have a 12 year record of throwing vulnerable children under a bus in terms of SEN provision diminishing catastrophically.

RedKendrick · 04/05/2024 22:55

I love an election and an election night even when I hate the outcome. Saddo! But yes, I am not a Labour voter but can't wait. I work in a (state) school so no possibility of booking the day after off, but that's fine. I worked in a university in 1997 and the absolute joy the next day was amazing. I don't think it will be quite like that this time, but we will at least allow ourselves hope; the Conservatives have treated the sector, and by extension, children, with contempt.

Echobelly · 04/05/2024 22:56

It's taken its sweet time to happen but I'm so relieved that in the last 6 months enough people have got tired of the Tories.

But we will need to be vigilant - owners of the media will be preparing to spend the whole 4 years crowing that the Labour administration is a disaster, scaremongering about refugees, crime and the economy etc and paving the way for an ever more extreme Tory party to be voted back in at the election after this one and people need to see through that bullshit.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 04/05/2024 22:56

No. I'm not even interested let alone excited. I don't care who wins, nothing will change. Except perhaps that Labour will bring in self ID even though virtually no one wants it.

Starmer is a vacuous moral coward and Sunak seems to have lost the plot. He was never capable enough for the job and he seems to be falling apart under the pressure. Both useless.
I expect Labour to get in, but not by the landslide they could have achieved. I think they might be shocked by how many people WON'T vote for them.
But I don't care much either way. We're all screwed whoever wins.

Didimum · 04/05/2024 22:56

ComeAlongPeggy · 04/05/2024 22:45

@GreenMagazine but I’m dealing with MY children NOW. So I’m doing what I need to do for them now. I won’t sacrifice their happiness and academic potential just so no-one picks on me for who I vote for.

But Labour most likely will get in and the policy likely will be implemented, so it sort of is what it is. Best to start making a plan if it’s that disastrous to you.

But what are the Labour Party going to do to change that? Their main policies (admittedly before a GE has been announced) are taxing private school parents and non doms, neither of which are going to raise a meaningful amount of money. How are any improvements of anything going to funded? It’s very easy as an opposition party to say “oh we would improve that”, but where is the money coming from? The famous Labour money tree?

JessS1990 · 04/05/2024 23:00

I am loving how upset some people are at the prospect of a government that will try and look after everyone in the country.

OpusGiemuJavlo · 04/05/2024 23:02

I loved staying up all night in 1997 and watching seat after seat explode from blue to red. But then TB turned into Warmonger McEvil so I will never quite regain that joy as I have too much jaded cynicism now. I have no particular hopes that Labour's government will improve things snd rather expect they will turn out to be incompetent buffoons, but at least they won't be actively trying to make things worse. So, I shall be cheering them on with champagne in-hand on election night. I just won't expect a bright dawn of enlightened good-government and prosperity to be established thereafter.

Comealongpeggy

I don't doubt it but you show me the low wage family managing to "make sacrifices" to find the money for private school fees for their SEN child. Go on. You won't, because if you bring in £25k a year no sacrifices on this planet will leave you enough to spend £10k after tax on school fees. Those kids need this as much as yours. Do they matter any less than yours?

They don't get to make the choice you make. Their child doesn't get the opportunity yours does.

And we all need to collectively share the responsibility and cost of levelling the playing field.

This. No amount of sacrifices or squeezing would get the majority of people's kids a private education. It's not like most people could do it with a bit of scrimping and saving, which seems to be what @ComeAlongPeggy is insinuating. Absolutely ludicrous and living on another planet from most people in this country.

LyndaLaHughes · 04/05/2024 23:05

I'm getting pretty fed up of the "I'm not wealthy" crowd. If you can afford private school even if you scrimp and save to do it then you are a damn sight better off than huge swathes of the population many of whom are struggling to make ends meet at all. Understand the privileged position you are in and stop trying to pretend you aren't incredibly fortunate. People are dying as a result of austerity. A purely political policy choice and one that has not befitted our economy at all. Where is all the money gone? This government have accrued more debt than every previous Labour administration combined. I am seeing staggering levels of poverty on a daily basis and food bank use has absolutely rocketed. I cannot wait to see the back of the despicable selfish b*stards who have destroyed the country and rinsed it for all its worth to line their own pockets and that of their mates. The Tories are utterly abhorrent.

What are the Labour Party policies on SEN support? I’m
not sure I’ve seen any.

You know we don't know their policies yet because there isn't a GE set, and they haven't published their manifesto. Plus whenever they announce a good idea the Tories attempt to nick it and cock it up

The pandemic cost quite a lot of money……

Yes, I’ve acknowledged that. I will await their policies. I suspect they won’t be fully costed and detailed though. This is very different from the hope and optimism of 1997. What a sorry state of affairs when we have to choose the least worst party.

You can suspect but that's just rumour. Whereas we concretely know what crap the Tories are doing.

The furlough scheme and self employment support cost £97bn.

As I’ve said already “What a sorry state of affairs when we have to choose the least worst party”. It’s really nothing like 1997 where people had hope, where things could actually change for the better.

Newnewer · 04/05/2024 23:20

My disabled child hasn't had access to education for over a year and even before then it wasn't full time education. I'm hoping with everything in me that a new government can allow my child to attend school. What will happen to all these lost children as they become adults, what hope is there for them

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 04/05/2024 23:21

ComeAlongPeggy · 04/05/2024 21:55

I’m actually hoping the tories stay in. I know, I know. But I don’t think Starmer is a good leader. Don’t @ me.

Also, for very good reasons my children are in independent schools.

Actually I wouldn’t have voted Tory (Starmer or no Starmer) if the tax on independent schools hadn’t been proposed. But it will be a disaster for us as a family.

So yeah. This doesn’t feel like 1997 to me.

This says it all about Tory voters 🤷‍♀️

I'll be staying up too @MotherofPearl and @SnapdragonToadflax . I may even invite people over to join in if they bring snacks 😊

I remember the 1997 election night too and the hope and optimism everywhere the following day was like a black cloud had lifted. It would be lovely to feel even 10% of that again.
