To compliment the thread about labour and give a bit of balance, let’s discuss the legacy of 14 years Conservative government. Never voted for them myself and although we now have 2 out of 3 Tory MPs up here because of the Brexit effect I haven’t seen any great improvement in our town. In fact if anything it’s pretty much gone to the dogs. So good and bad, what have they achieved ?

Imagine it painted on the side of a bus. Instant gravitas.

but a very very misleading point,

ArchaeoSpy · 04/05/2024 21:25

the challenge before us is to build a society where the prosperity of the few does not come at the expense of the many, where every child has the opportunity to thrive and fulfill their potential. This necessitates a fundamental reimagining of our economic and social systems to prioritize equity, justice, and human dignity above all else. @notprincehamlet

Ruined the state education system by pushing teachers to the absolute brink. So many experienced teachers have quit and they can't recruit enough to replace them. Awful.

We can have all those fluffy things but first we need a strong economy that is competitive and more productive.

which also then explains how some become richer and others the same levels etc but some think the rich should be capped and the wealth redistributed.

Goldenphoenix · 04/05/2024 21:34

Ruined our beautiful beaches by allowing their mates to pump shit directly into our waterways.

Can I get that on a scatter cushion?

Children having their most basic needs met in terms of adequate food, housing, facilities to keep clean etc is not a "fluffy" extra, it is the absolute minimum expectation in a civilised society.

Maybe we should just go for full communism 😂

HangryOliveMentor · 04/05/2024 21:50

Not that I ever subscribed to Conservative ideology, but the modern problem for the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” school of thought is that social mobility barely exists anymore, and the middle class continues to shrink.

What you’re left with is basically a Caste system.

pointythings · 04/05/2024 21:54

I have no problem with people being richer than others.

I have a problem with people having more money than they will ever spend in their lives even if they have a pair of Louboutins for every day of the year while other people struggle to feed their children. There's a balance to be had here.

Zonder · 04/05/2024 21:58

One thing the Tories have done for us is they've got my teens so worked up that they are now really ardent labour fans.

ArchaeoSpy · 04/05/2024 22:02

youngones1 · 04/05/2024 21:45

Maybe we should just go for full communism 😂

some of the public would prefer that, and if planed and carried out correctly without corruption how would it be in society ?

plus what do you do with the unnecessary labour as once everything is standardised and ran efficiently and only one company for each type of industry etc as there would be no competition etc then there would be a large surpless of the population.

ill admit i could be wrong but thats my analysis

Cattenberg · 04/05/2024 22:10

If I remember rightly, the Tories banned microplastics, greatly increased the maximum prison sentence for animal cruelty offences and scrapped Labour’s plans for everyone to have to carry ID cards.

On the other hand, they will leave all of the following in a far worse state than they found them:

The NHS
Local Authorities (especially Social Services)
Education (at every level)
The Police
The justice system including Legal Aid
Workers’ Rights
The environment, especially our rivers and beaches
Our reputation as a sensible, trustworthy nation which punched well above its weight in terms of “soft power” and influence

Cherryon · 04/05/2024 22:16

I thought the first two- microplastics and animal cruelty were EU laws that came into effect after Brexit vote, but before Brexit happened so we had to implement them.

Cattenberg · 04/05/2024 22:22

That sounds about right. I remember that the EU made us clean up our beaches and it wasn’t long after Brexit that the Tories let them turn to shit again.

Cattenberg · 04/05/2024 22:25

For years I’ve been attributing the animal cruelty laws to Michael Gove, in a “see, he isn’t ALL bad” kind of way.

Churchview · 04/05/2024 22:31

When I think of the Tories and animal welfare I think of how they dragged their feet on the Animal welfare (Sentience) Act and have failed to pass the Kept Animals Bill.

The British Isles have become the Shitish Isles.

All those furlough payments during COVID.
If it hadn’t been for that, many people would have lost jobs and businesses would have gone under.
People have short memories though.

They screwed most the rest of us over though. 7 Million left behind.

We haven’t forgotten that.

RandomButtons · 04/05/2024 22:48

Same Sex Marriage
compulsory workplace pensions
modern slavery bill
increase of minimum wage
regular raising basic tax rate threshold

otherwise there’s been a lot of bad.

Fangisnotacoward · 04/05/2024 22:55

Hang on I'm thinking...

Wait...

Hang on...

Err...

...

Ooh, that discount I got that one time I used "eat out to help out" was good. Aside from that I've got nothing. My life has been palpably worse under the tories.

I don't even live in the UK so it's nothing to do with me - but surely most countries had some form of payment made to people who couldn't work during COVID, no matter what form of government they had?

Bululu · 05/05/2024 05:42

The Tories are not half the evil the agenda pushers always claim they are. However, they have not done a great job and have fucked the middle classes. It does not mean Labour is much better.

I won’t be here to see what Labour would be like. However, I can see how the odious major of London has damaged this city. Wales is under Labour so that can give you an idea about the NHS. What about the Labour councils going bankrupt? The middle classes would suffered with either party but more with Labour. They think we are a cash cow. Have your free meals and transport but I rather the streets are safe from illegal criminals and gangs. That kids can walk to school without being knifed.
