To ask what the tories have ever done for us…

To compliment the thread about labour and give a bit of balance, let’s discuss the legacy of 14 years Conservative government. Never voted for them myself and although we now have 2 out of 3 Tory MPs up here because of the Brexit effect I haven’t seen any great improvement in our town. In fact if anything it’s pretty much gone to the dogs. So good and bad, what have they achieved ?

BREXIT

Unlike the Labour Party, the Tory PM was against Brexit.

youngones1 · 04/05/2024 18:40

The Tory party discourage us from sponging off the state.

they have reminded us that we should be proud to be British, not ashamed. they instil patriotism in us as living and working people.

the conservatives encourage us to work, provide for our families, and be resilient - not moan and groan and blame everyone else for our problems.

when I think back to the war, we got by through patriotism and work ethic, I don't think the Labour Party would encourage either of those.

But by breaking international law, by making the UK a laughing stock with the self-harm of Brexit, by polluting our seas and rivers and tanking our economy they have made it quite hard to be proud of being British. They've made the UK a country where nothing works and made the government operate on cruelty, corruption and greed. They've plunged children into poverty, they've caused food banks to rocket, they've trashed the health service and education, they've ensured that young people in Britain are unhappier than those of all comparable countries. What is there left to be proud of? They've absolutely ruined the international standing and reputation this country used to have.

The Conservatives have certainly tested the resilience of anyone who works in the NHS, anyone trying to get a dentist, those on cancer treatment waiting lists, people using food banks.....I could go on.

People aren't moaning and groaning this week. They're voting for other parties.

We are the fifth richest economy in the world yet according to them we have no money! Where is it?

neverbeenskiing · 04/05/2024 18:43

To be fair to them, out of tragedy often comes comedy and for all the misery wrought the Tories have also given us some laughs.

"The sea was closed" Domic Raab.

Nadine Dorries Tik Tok rap...Nadine Dorries full stop actually.

Matt Hancock pretending to cry on Good Morning Britain.

Boris Johnson hiding in a fridge.

Teresa May running through the fields of wheat.

Rishi Sunak trying to appear relatable in his fresh out of the box Adidas Sambas and rendering them instantly passé.

Gillian Keegan thinking Teachers should thank her for doing "a fucking good job".

It's been a shit show, but some of the memes have been excellent.

By sanctioning people and destroying their mental health.

bombastix · 04/05/2024 18:44

Ergh. I think the war generation were vastly more tolerant than they are latterly portrayed by some. Many of the men had come back from killing other men in Europe and the country in bits. They wanted a better country and a better life for their children and gave Labour a landslide to do it. The fact that later a younger generation voted for something vastly more self orientated and conservative for the last 40 years is on us. All political parties change with the people who vote for them.

The Tory party discourage us from sponging off the state.

But schools are having to set up their own food and clothing banks because more children than ever before are living in poverty. The state is supposed to provide support for the most vulnerable. The system is fucked.

It came out last year that a Tory minister and MP's had even been putting their driving fines on expenses. Clearly sponging off the taxpayer is only discouraged if you're poor.

Speak for yourself. I am deeply ashamed of what this country has become under their watch.

The callous disregard for the most vulnerable in society, the performative cruelty of Tory foreign policy, the blatant lies and corruption that has been exposed with seemingly no consequences for those responsible, the wanton destruction of our public services. All these things should be a national source of shame. The Tories have not done anything that makes me feel proud to be British. When I see people campaigning for social justice, working hard in their local communities to plug the gaps in vital services the Tories have decimated and above all, fighting to get the bastards out at the next opportunity, now that does make me feel proud.

user1471453601 · 04/05/2024 19:21

They've done one good thing for me. My Daughter, a graduate in political history, firmly refused to even vote. She was so appalled at Boris Johnson, she now vote s whenever possible, and joined me, my mother, sister and brother in law in the Labour Party.

So, the Cons did that, which I can put in the "good" list, but it's far far outweighed if you look at the "bad" list.

Cost us a fortune in PM pensions . How many PM's now ?

that can be solved by have the same leader for x amount of years

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 04/05/2024 19:28

Made sure that we ate out to help out spreading covid. Then made sure all of the cuts targeted the most vulnerable. Warehouse your disabled friends and family here folks. Bonus points for elderly people being discharged from hospital with no care plan and coming straight back with broken bones from falling the next day. Shoved a whole heap more responsibility for SEN and social issues onto schools with not even inflation equalling funding increases while closing down children's centres. Tax cuts for the better off while letting P&O get away with unlawfully firing everyone. And bollocks to all those who say at least the tories agree with their stance on what a woman is, they also ensured that rape is decriminalised.

In case you can't tell, my vote will not be for them.

£400 billion spent on Covid.

And by their own admission, covid will cost a lot less than Brexit.

More billionaires and more children living in poverty

youngones1 · 04/05/2024 19:43

The Tories have pushed through big increases in the national living wage.

Well no that’s true, but generally the public know who will be the Prime Minister if the party they vote for wins. The electorate doesn’t usually expect the musical chairs of losers we’ve had to put up with from this Government.

Chaosx3x · 04/05/2024 20:00

Financially we have done quite well from the Tories but that’s because we’re higher than average earners. The new child benefit limit means that we are eligible again. We got first time buyers stamp duty exemption in 2018 and then paid hardly any on our next move in 2020 due to stamp duty breaks post covid. We are currently getting completely free childcare for our just turned 3 year old (previously wouldn’t have had any funding until September) and our youngest will get funding from January which will also save us a lot of money because we use childminders rather than nursery so they allow you to just use funded hours rather than stretch them. So in January our childcare bill for our youngest will be £140 a month instead of circa £500. We also use the tax free childcare scheme.

Of course, we’d be better off financially if Lizzy T hadn’t fucked everything up and if food prices weren’t soaring and if Boris hadn’t pissed a load of money away on PPE contracts for his mates but, you know.

Actually, not only is every word the literal, objective truth, it encapsulates exactly the society that 14 years of tory government has resulted in.

Q. What have the Tories every done for us?
A. Brought back Victorian diseases

Mags1001 · 04/05/2024 20:32

Not that I'm a tory but I quite enjoyed furlough, my boss at the time would never allow time off! Unless you were infact dead & even then he would frown on it.
£66 a month for my gas bill was nice too.
However...now we have run out of cash erm 🤔🤔
Yep...got nothing.
