To compliment the thread about labour and give a bit of balance, let’s discuss the legacy of 14 years Conservative government. Never voted for them myself and although we now have 2 out of 3 Tory MPs up here because of the Brexit effect I haven’t seen any great improvement in our town. In fact if anything it’s pretty much gone to the dogs. So good and bad, what have they achieved ?

But so many self-employed people got nothing.

You're point being what, that I shouldn't appreciate the support I got?

youngones1 · 04/05/2024 17:31

Had it not been for the furlough scheme, millions of people would have been unemployed, it was a brilliant idea by the Tories.

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 04/05/2024 17:33

And one that every other nation thought up themselves…I mean what did you expect a government to do. Allow people to become destitute when they can’t work and earn ?

All those furlough payments during COVID.
If it hadn’t been for that, many people would have lost jobs and businesses would have gone under.
People have short memories though.

Came to say this, my business wouldn't be where it is without the continued financial support throughout covid, but this is the only good thing I can think of and who can say what any other government would've done at the time...

The Tories weren't unique. Many other countries had similar schemes, with lots more generous than the UK's.

I guess they've prevented public services in England from turning as shit as they are in Wales, under Labour.

Which part of Wales are you in @Moonmelodies ?

That thread is full of posters who are terrified of losing a tax break on their child's private school fees if Labour get in. For the vast majority of people that is not their biggest concern.

You seem to think a left-leaning government benefits those on middle to low incomes. It doesn't. In fact, left-wing governments often make life miserable for ordinary working people. The billionaires are untouchable. Whack up taxes and they'll just move to their villa in Italy, or bugger off on their superyacht. It's also near impossible to get anything out of the rich. They're experts at moving their money around and avoiding tax. The burden will fall on middle-earners, and those on low incomes who don't fiddle the system or claim benefits.

My grandparents emerged from WW2 as angry working-class Labour voters. If they were alive now, however, the modern Labour party would hate their guts. They were patriotic, opposed to mass immigration, suspicious of multiculturalism, and contemptuous of those who lived on benefits. Today, the average Labour activist would regard my grandparents as loathsome 'NIMBYs' or 'little Englanders'. The modern Labour party is a different beast to the party that won a landslide in 1945. Many of its supporters don't realise how much the party hates them or how much worse their life is going to be after ten years of Starmer.

youngones1 · 04/05/2024 17:54

Gordon Brown introduced the lifetime pension allowance in 2006. Thankfully the Tories have abolished this ludicrous policy

Er, no, he didn't. And I'm pretty sure he never watched porn in the Chamber or went AWOL to appear on a reality TV show.

Or groped his mistress against his office door during working hours and lockdown restrictions.

fussychica · 04/05/2024 18:05

Decimated public services and so much more whilst they continue to have their snouts firmly in the trough.

I thought it was a tacit admission that benefits given to the unemployed are such a pittance that this could not be contemplated or otherwise people would have gone to work anyway.

Newheadche · 04/05/2024 18:13

Shitty brexit where I can’t even send my mum a birthday present to EU without her waiting 6weeks plus and paying all taxes on a £20 gift!

bluetopazlove · 04/05/2024 18:13

Cost us a fortune in PM pensions . How many PM's now ?

Imiko · 04/05/2024 18:15

I've never voted Tory but our childcare cost is a lot cheaper for our 2 year old now

pointythings · 04/05/2024 18:17

Contempt for those who live on benefits is a deeply unpleasant character trait. As the parent of two disabled young adults who both work, I don't feel contempt for anyone who is less fortunate than I am.

Youngones1 Are you Rishi Sunak 😂

I believe other countries also did a furlough scheme. Don't think it was the Tories idea but nice try!

Maybe you could mention stopping the boats next? I think thats normally what the Tories trot out as the answer to any question

Childcare here is still way more than in Europe. They have done very little in this area, really.

Where are you posting to that it takes 6 weeks to arrive? I sell things and post them to the EU regularly using standard airmail and it usually takes a week to arrive tops. If there is ever a delay (I'm looking at you Greece) it is always the fault of the local EU country postal system which you can't really blame our government for.

The last Labour government certainly made life easier for ordinary people in terms of education, environment policing, health provision. They raised hundreds of thousands of children and the elderly out of poverty.

I am interested to know what ways you think our lives will be worse after 10 years of Labour government, especially considering the situation we are in now re: the environment, economy, education, health, roads etc after 14 years of Tory rule. Worse that this? How?

youngones1 · 04/05/2024 18:29

The Tories have extended free childcare, as a mum, I appreciate this.

Quite. And also it is strange to hear that was the view of this couple who were Labour supporters in 1945. Following the war Labour were wholeheartedly committed to providing a cradle to grave welfare state to take care of those who needed help.

Since the last General election in 2019 we've had 3 Prime Ministers and 5 Chancellors of the Exchequer.

Thank goodness we have the Strong and Stable Conservative party otherwise the country would be a chaotic laughing stock. OH!!

misszebra · 04/05/2024 18:34

they have reminded us that we should be proud to be British, not ashamed. they instil patriotism in us as living and working people.

the conservatives encourage us to work, provide for our families, and be resilient - not moan and groan and blame everyone else for our problems.

when I think back to the war, we got by through patriotism and work ethic, I don't think the Labour Party would encourage either of those.
