To ask what the tories have ever done for us…

To compliment the thread about labour and give a bit of balance, let’s discuss the legacy of 14 years Conservative government. Never voted for them myself and although we now have 2 out of 3 Tory MPs up here because of the Brexit effect I haven’t seen any great improvement in our town. In fact if anything it’s pretty much gone to the dogs. So good and bad, what have they achieved ?

Came up with the Rwanda project to deter illegal immigrants.

Came up with the Rwanda project to deter illegal immigrants.

It hasn't deterred them so far and cost many millions.

Came up with the Rwanda project to deter illegal immigrants.

An inherently racist, eye-wateringly expensive and unworkable policy that according to the Governments own figures will cost more per individual than it would to keep them in the UK.

I believe there is one positive thing about this vile policy. A lot of people have woken up to how far to the right the Tories have actually swung, and the myth of them being the party of economic competence.

Suella Braverman, "People are not convinced by what we are saying".

We're not judging them by what they are saying, we're judging them for their actions over the past 14 years and what they have done to the country.

Also Suella, "I am going to fight, even if it makes me unpopular."

No fight necessary.

Told us all not to vote Brexit. Shame on us we didn't follow their advice.

So, the party who dumped the Brexit referendum on us then told us not to vote for it?
Did they?

If that's an example of something good that the tories have done for us, can you please think of another one, as that's just lame.

Churchview · 05/05/2024 09:39

It's really interesting that those unhappy with the results of the recent elections can only offer, 'Be careful what you wish for' or 'We'll see in 5 years'.

Not, 'Oh my goodness, people aren't paying attention to all the fantastic plans the Tories have and look at all the good they've done'. There's none of that.

The Tory funding Daily Mail, Boris Johnson and his straight bananas, the Telegraph, Jacob Rees Mogg et all were all pressing for leave for a decade before Brexit.

Abolished Home Information Packs ( HIPs) and made home buying easier.

No they didn’t. It was experimental and ditched by Labour after two years.

Came up with the Rwanda project to deter illegal immigrants.

This year, several applicants have been granted asylum in the UK because their country of origin has been deemed unsafe. Guess which country it was? You guessed it. Rwanda.

This whole thing is a debacle.

Watching her speak is a microcosm of the problems the Tories have. She is too right wing, too dogmatic, and too incautious to be given power yet she was given it. And when she had it, she was irresponsible and harsh. If she is the future of the Conservatives they are doomed. People will just vote for Reform. If they have these kind of beliefs she does, they will be happier there anyway. The only good thing is how unpopular she is with her own colleagues.

BIossomtoes · 05/05/2024 10:12

If I was given the choice (with a gun held to my head, obviously) between voting for Braverman’s brand of Toryism and Reform Tice would get my vote.

I would suggest looking into this in a bit more detail before declaring it an amazing victory

take a good look at how many kids are living in real poverty now too whilst you’re at it

BIossomtoes · 05/05/2024 10:31

You’re pissing in the wind @youngones1. Nobody was convicted even before the facile “lefty judge” comment which lost you all credibility.

I guess they've prevented public services in England from turning as shit as they are in Wales, under Labour.

People always say this without ever thinking about the Barnett formula and whether it’s appropriate for a post-industrial society with a larger than average proportion of poverty, ill health and social problems caused by the loss of its dominant industries. I find that quite short sighted.

The judges are notoriously soft, that's why so few illegal immigrants are sent away. The immigrants know this too, it's what makes this country so appealing., as well as the hotel stays and lengthy appeal process.
