The way disabled people are being treated and spoken about on here in recent days is disgusting. It is verging on online hate crimes and if ithey were about other marginalised groups would not have been allowed to stand by MNHQ.

The disinformation, the sneering, the complete lack of compassion from so many Mumsnetters is vile.

Disability for the very most part isn't something that people bring onto themselves. Parents don't do anything but have different luck to you and have a disabled child.

My genetics are different to yours so I have a fucked up immune system and the host of problems that has given me.

My DH had a horrific upbringing which has led him to have MH problems- he works by the way. I did too for a long time until my body couldn't cope.

My DC was injured at birth due to a hospital fault.

My neighbour fell off his bike and has a traumatic brain injury.

My friend has breast cancer.

My cousin is dead at 38 due to epilepsy.

My nephew is so unhappy due to his ADHD bot letting him fit in at school and my sister is having trouble helping him through it due to hers.

Why are we so unworthy to you?

Are we not due the same courtesy of online treatment as those of different races and religion...or does that go out the window as you pay for us?

@MNHQ why is it acceptable for you to allow your users to bully the marginalised on this site?

And how exactly do you have access to all of their medical records please?

You could say I'm "clearly fine and just being lazy" but I have Parkinson's disease.... Some days I can’t walk at all, some days I can but can’t leave the house and other days (the rarest of all days) I can pop to home bargains. I even managed to mow my lawn a few weeks ago for the first time in a very, very long time. If anyone saw me doing it, or in home bargains, they'd be straight on the phone to the benefits fraud hotline. What they don't see is that if I do have a day where I manage to go to a shop or even a day where I somehow mow the lawn, that night I'm all but paralysed. The next day I am always 100% immobile and usually the following day and often the day after also.
You haven't a fucking clue Biscuit

It's everything to do with privilege if your opinion is based on the outside looking in.

It’s quite possible to take a more comprehensive view!

XenoBitch · 03/05/2024 20:30

Apricotsaretheonlyfruit · 03/05/2024 20:25

If that's as far as your imagination can stretch you have bigger problems than Mary.

Really?

Are you disabled? Claim any sort of benefit? If not, then good for you, and fucking stroll on.

There have been multiple threads about benefits this week... so many ableist comments that are fucking hurtful and untrue.

I have been on several... one poster said that the anorexic DD of a poster should not be getting so much in benefits as she is anorexic so therefore does not have "food costs"...

And that is the level of ignorance we are facing here.

RicherThanYews · 03/05/2024 20:30

For all the lucky folk on this thread who don't live with disabilities that fuck up your whole life, there is excellent news! If the tories win again (they probably will) they will be taking away the PIP cash cow and replacing it with vouchers for a disability aids catalogue because we cripples are not allowed to use that money as we see fit. Hoorah! You can celebrate.

(I'm physically and "mentally" disabled, I work and claim no benefits, thank fuck).

LeopardsRockingham · 03/05/2024 20:31

Health is a "fucking privilege".
There is a lot of shite peddled now that look after your body and your body will look after you.
Yes, in principle that is sound advice BUT for some people no matter what they do their bodies will conspire against them.

Compassion fatigue from covid.....seriously?

I'm so glad I live in my own head and not others.

Enlighten me? Please.

Rrrright so all the blind or paraplegic people are working are they?
The guy round the corner from me who is paralysed from the next down, he's working is he? I have Parkinson's. I pass out frequently, I go dizzy & faint. I'm constantly tremoring and shaking. What do you suggest I do????

I haven’t at any point made any comment about disabled people claiming benefits, and I think they should get far more support, so I think you are addressing this comment to the wrong person.

Don't worry, some of us who aren't disabled and work full time understand. Those who bang on about being a taxpayer do my bloody head in, NO ONE CARES, get over it. It doesn't make you superior.

Well there's not much point even attempting to have a reasonable debate on Mumsnet so I'm not going to bother.

Why the fuck did you comment being goady then? That makes sense. I wonder 🤔 To be fair, I do tend to agree that having a reasonable debate on MN is sometimes a bit of a challenge and it’s a lot to do with the fact that people who have no idea what they are on about feel the need to come on here and pop their two pence in 🤣 and even worse when they reply like a child with responses such as ‘’whatever you say!’’

Willyoujustbequiet · 03/05/2024 20:36

WinterMorn · 03/05/2024 20:08

I wasn’t referring to addiction. I was talking about people who make a conscious decision to not work and claim benefits instead.

You can't do this. There are requirements to be met and sanctions imposed.

Apricotsaretheonlyfruit · 03/05/2024 20:38

YABU if you think the bullying is only on one side.

IClaudine · 03/05/2024 20:38

You can do this quite easily. I used to hold a caseload which had a high percentage of people that did exactly that.

Apricotsaretheonlyfruit · 03/05/2024 20:38

I have literally never seen any bullying towards people who work. Never.

That's naive. We almost all know people who have gamed the system.

Jeannie88 · 03/05/2024 20:39

This seems to have gone to arguments about claiming benefits, not just disability. It comes down to those who genuinely need it to others who rent out their paid for flat, have a partner who pays for them, family who have taken over the care of kids, claim to be unable to physically work but are at the pub dancing etc. Such a shame the system is abused so much and yes I know first hand, currently an in law has a paid for house she rents out but lives with someone else who claims all disability but both work cash in hand, get rents and bills paid for. X

XenoBitch · 03/05/2024 20:22

What does a tough conversation mean? "Sorry Mary, you have to be less disabled so we can give you less in PIP"...

It's laughable isn't it.

What do you mean? Are you are medical professional who assesses this? If not then how do you know they are fit for work or not?

I did know people.. and it was people who claimed they were living alone when they were not.
Never known anyone fiddle being "disabled".

WinterMorn · 03/05/2024 20:28

As hard as it is to accept, yes, for some people it is.

Yes it is, those I know are happy to live like this and be further subsidised by family and friends.

I know a lovely lady who is very physically disabled after her very abusive ex beat her to the point she suffered spinal damage. She now hobbles about with a walking stick.
She still goes out clubbing. Is she meant to just rot and die at home?

You don’t need to be a medical professional to know when’s someone is swinging the lead…especially when they are open about it.

I haven’t seen anything hateful towards disabled people on any of the threads. If you see that op, you should report it.

on the thread where people nor on benefits were talking about their difficulties, there was a lot of hate towards them although no one was saying anything unreasonable. It’s important to have compassion for others

Well, funny you should say that that. Because MNHQ have been going through all the recent disability benefit threads and making deletions. And have made some deletions on this very thread.

They have also banned one poster.

Because I work hard and pay my taxes to keep them entertained apparently.

You must have a tiny world view. Lots of people 'work hard and pay taxes' and get sick anyway.
