The way disabled people are being treated and spoken about on here in recent days is disgusting. It is verging on online hate crimes and if ithey were about other marginalised groups would not have been allowed to stand by MNHQ.

The disinformation, the sneering, the complete lack of compassion from so many Mumsnetters is vile.

Disability for the very most part isn't something that people bring onto themselves. Parents don't do anything but have different luck to you and have a disabled child.

My genetics are different to yours so I have a fucked up immune system and the host of problems that has given me.

My DH had a horrific upbringing which has led him to have MH problems- he works by the way. I did too for a long time until my body couldn't cope.

My DC was injured at birth due to a hospital fault.

My neighbour fell off his bike and has a traumatic brain injury.

My friend has breast cancer.

My cousin is dead at 38 due to epilepsy.

My nephew is so unhappy due to his ADHD bot letting him fit in at school and my sister is having trouble helping him through it due to hers.

Why are we so unworthy to you?

Are we not due the same courtesy of online treatment as those of different races and religion...or does that go out the window as you pay for us?

@MNHQ why is it acceptable for you to allow your users to bully the marginalised on this site?

If they are not disabled or unwell, they they will have work commitments and be on the lowest rate of benefits with threat of sanction.

I know.

DickJagger · 03/05/2024 19:47

Not at all. I have spent several years working with some people who are not disabled or unwell, but have made a conscious decision not to work and to claim benefits instead

Except you cannot do that anymore. You have to seek work or you are sanctioned. Unless of course you are disabled and/or caring for someone who is.

It is bizarre to me how so many posters here claim to "work with" people raking in the juicy bennies.

XenoBitch · 03/05/2024 19:47

Giraffesandbottoms · 03/05/2024 19:42

wtf

Really? People sometimes succumb to addiction because of other trauma in their life.

And in some countries, cannabis is legal for medicinal reasons.

I am "WTF" about your WTF.

I haven’t seen anything hateful towards disabled people on any of the threads. If you see that op, you should report it.

on the thread where people nor on benefits were talking about their difficulties, there was a lot of hate towards them although no one was saying anything unreasonable. It’s important to have compassion for others

Hoglet70 · 03/05/2024 19:48

YoureALizardHarry11 · 03/05/2024 19:46

It’s not what I think, it’s the truth, whether you want to believe it or keep being willfully ignorant it doesn’t change that fact 🤣

Whatever makes you happy! We could go back on forth on this one all night I think 😂

Dweetfidilove · 03/05/2024 19:49

UC makes up 14.5% of my income. I don’t feel bullied by the threads, but I (not so much anymore) marvel at the ignorance, naivety and lack of critical thinking some people have.

It also helps me to make sense of the rubbish our politicians and broadcasters spew. I always wondered if they actually believed anyone buys into the bullshit they peddle, then come here or elsewhere and see they actually have an audience.

If I feel like it, I’ll call out some of the bullshit. If not, I move along, but then I’ve never minded much about what people think.

You are right that some are downright nasty though, OP.

What have you seen that would be considered a hate crime?

On the other recent thread a vulnerable poster who had been very open with her mental health struggles was told she should go die under a bridge.

K0OLA1D · 03/05/2024 19:50

Hoglet70 · 03/05/2024 19:39

Because I work hard and pay my taxes to keep them entertained apparently.

Get off your high fucking horse.

This thread didn't need starting. MN don't care. We're just going to get a shit load shit piled on on this thread as well

WithACatLikeTread · 03/05/2024 19:50

It is not just disabilities. It is anyone who claims benefits getting the criticism.

A burden on society? Wow.

Does it make you happy to slag off people on the internet whose lives or history you know absolutely fuck all about? Sad. Do you think people wake up one day saying ‘Oh you know what? I think I’ll turn into an alcoholic and ruin my life and prospects for absolutely no reason whatsoever? 🤣🤣

Yes, it's how I get my kicks.

A "burden"? You said that.
Is that what you think of any disabled friend you have that don't work?

And all this talk about benefits at the moment from the government is about PIP, which is a benefit someone can claim even if they ARE WORKING.

VeraForever · 03/05/2024 19:53

It's such an emotive subject.

Disabled people can often work , with suitable support in place.

However, I live in a town where the percentage of people claiming disability benefits is considerably higher than the national average.

How did that happen?

It also transpires that my town has an unusually high number of teenage pregnancies.
This coincides with a higher than average youth unemployment.

This has been the case for many years.

What's the answer?

YoureALizardHarry11 · 03/05/2024 19:54

Haha, if punching down makes you feel better about yourself then fill your boots I suppose. It’s very common for people who are unhappy with their own lives.

Yes this has hit the nail on the head. It's the same in my area. Benefits were set up for those in genuine need and I appreciate there are many like you and the people you listed who fully deserve them. I have no problem with my money going to those in need through no fault of their own. Sadly nowadays so many wasters just play the system. I am sorry that you are being tarred with the same brush.

Uricon2 · 03/05/2024 19:56

Hoglet70 · 03/05/2024 19:41

Come live on my council estate for a while and then see how ignorant you think I am!

So you're in LA housing, being subsidised?

Oh the horror! You see, it can extend to you too.

WinterMorn · 03/05/2024 19:56

Hmmm, some of the nasty and directed comments on here about a post complaining of online bullying…🤷‍♀️

How do you know these people are on benefits? Unless you've seen their bank accounts you know nothing.

No I bought my house. I presume it was subsidised at some point and someone bought it from the LA.

Well there's not much point even attempting to have a reasonable debate on Mumsnet so I'm not going to bother.

Willyoujustbequiet · 03/05/2024 19:59

Yanbu OP

It's always the same names. There is something clearly wrong with them that they get some perverse kind of pleasure attacking the most vulnerable. It reminds me of kids who pull wings off flies.

Mumsnet need to clamp down decisively. This kind of shit wouldn't be allowed with racism. Far too much leeway is given to ableism.

Possibly with a 60% discount that no private renter would ever get.
