Arranged for handyman to fit 4 blinds. Price agreed. 2 very small blinds, one a bit bigger and one large. He’s been here 5 hours and still not done.

Not only this but every time he goes out to fetch something he leaves my door wide open, I keep having to shut it. I’ve told him I’m really cold.

He’s been to the toilet three times. Left the door wide open the third time! I had to tell him to wash his hands ffs. The toilet seat left up on all occasions.

He’s making a fucking mess everywhere and has chopped a small chunk out of the window surround. I’m sat in my bedroom furious. I had important phone calls to make and I can’t do them.

What would you do?

He then proceeded to chuck them all out all over the hall floor in a strop. He also walked wet, dirty foot prints all over the kitchen floor from when he went out on the balcony to check the outlet pipe.

We had the exact opposite on Wednesday. We're getting a fitted wardrobe and the surveyor put plastic overshoes on, asked where the gas and electric meters were, asked if he could move things to look and was very polite.

That's what my wife told me, she seemed quite impressed.

I can do all the decorating, some simple plumbing, floor board replacement and the like, but some jobs are better left to experts, if not least for time constraints. If someone can do something in 2 hours, instead of 3 or 4 frustrating days, why not, if you can afford it

Exactly! And these people are advertising to do so clearly want the jobs/money.

I’m glad you got a good one.

Look OP - doing handy work is someone else’s home for probably not a huge sum is shit work. He doesn’t want to be there any more than you want him there - he might have bladder issues. Not everyone shuts the toilet door after they finish (in my house a shut door means it’s occupied). Next time, hire a licenced company rather than a local handyman who will likely be any old unqualified person who needs some cash.

Gosh i know your up set but calm down a bit me and other posters are just saying how long it took us to do our blinds.
You know it took xxx long whats he playing at.
But you seem to be having a go at posters for nothing thanks for crown i like it.

@earther

i understand where you're coming from, but you know what you were thinking. As a simple statement amongst the 'put your own blinds up' comments it feels like you were saying that too.

i almost invited you to come & do mine!!

I had an accident and lost most of the use of one arm and can't lift anything above shoulder height & I can't hold things lower for more than a minute or two. There a lot I can no longer do myself (midway through a solo renovation that's really handy🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️)

But Isppreviate it wasn't your intention.

It’s like a faulty tower sketch now but I’m not laughing. Out of all the handymen I could have got I landed on this one. I’m going to ask for his credentials.

If it makes you feel any better I had a gardener who set the house on fire, (didn't even notice he'd set his own shoes on fire!), and while I was battling with a fire extinguisher and shouting at him to dial 999 he was saying "No it's ok, I'll put it out" while throwing individual CUPS of water into the flames, all while the guttering melted and crashed down. 🙈

It was a decent sum. He asked for that much. If he doesn’t like being in someone’s home, do the job properly and in a faster time (this over 5 hours!). He left the door open WHILE he was taking a piss and I was in the very next room with my door open. He didn’t wash his hands afterwards so I told him to. A grown man. He’s touching all my stuff, wash the damn hands. He was advertising on a similar place like Check a Trade, not a local handyman so he obviously felt he was entitled to charge a good rate.

Unacceptable behaviour.

Jeez, that’s terrible and scary! Did he fix all the damage?

We’re in the blinds business, and fitting isn’t always as straightforward as you would expect. Lots of variables can come into play that can extend the time (eg steel lintels, people who plaster or clad after measurements have been taken) . However if they’re straightforward blinds face fixed onto a window each blind should take 10 minutes max. He was definitely taking the piss, and the open toilet door is disgusting. What a pig.

Thanks, yeah just show some decorum in some else’s home! My children knew to shut the door when going to the loo when they were youngsters. It made me feel really awkward but by the time I was getting angry. He kept leaving the door wide open every time he went to his van and he took a long time, I’d told him I was cold, it was cold today. Just shut the door. I don’t know what’s wrong with people like this.

Ok yes that’s disgusting and a bit scary. I’d have asked him to leave and found someone else to do the work.

I wouldn't have let him! I just wanted him gone. Luckily I'm having my roof redone anyway, and had quotes for all new guttering and drainpipes so it wasn't an issue, they were being replaced anyway. He knocked off money for new facia boards which I sorted myself, and he offered to pay for a replacement extinguisher and paint all the white rendering where it was black but I said no. I just wanted him gone. He clearly had MH issues and the 3 fire engines turning up and having the chief fireman speak to him had upset him so much I just felt it was best he went and never came back!! The video from the back garden CCTV was hilarious in a "what not to do in the event of a fire" way, and could have only been improved by having the Benny Hill theme tune as backing track. 🤣

HateMyNewJobSoMuch · 03/05/2024 21:58

I had 5 black out blinds fitted when I moved into this house. No previous blinds in place (new build).

Guy from the blinds company had them all up in under 30 minutes and they are still going strong several years later!

It doesn't sound great and the leaving the toilet door open wasn't great.

But you sound very unpleasant and a bit of a bully OP tbh.

Yes that's exactly what it sounds like. She should have been offering cups of tea for 5 hours and constantly asking if he was OK. Maybe she should have paid him double? Offered to stand and watch while he pissed to make him more comfortable? Actually maybe she just should have paid him without him doing any work at all. Maybe bought him dinner?
I mean it's ridiculous to expect a so called advertised professional to just come in and be decent and do the job required in a prompt and efficient way. She definitely shouldn't have got annoyed after 5 hours. She should have offered him a bed for the night after 8pm if he was still there.

Thank you @Flocke

When finally being assertive after giving him the benefit of the doubt (for over five hours of all this happening in my own home) equals being a bully, I’m actually lost for words.

He sounds disgusting and disrespectful.

I've had tradesmen like that - they bring their horrible ways into your home and it's stressful. I've also had delightful ones - it doesn't have to go with the territory!

But yes, some of them you feel must have been brought up by wolves.
